Most tacked-on multiplayer modes in games

While we discuss the subject - how will multiplayer in Watch Dogs be handled? Will there only be game modes integrated in the singleplayer experience or are they going for classic deathmatch modes as well?

the last of us.

I don't think you actually played it..

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Lock-on sure does make multiplayer fun....

You can say that all you want, but atleast like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark it's open about it.

In most console FPS games the auto aim is hilariously broken but they try and hide it. MP2 Echos multi was ace.

Dead Space 2.
In the end, I don't think EA even liked it.

The delivered MP was definitely tacked on but if they'd really expanded it I think it could actually have worked with larger maps and more depth. Or maybe I'm just desperate for a good MP involving monsters - last one I remember of note was AvP2 which was great fun.

Myself I'd go for:

  • Spec Ops - nice way to undermine the whole thematic premise of your SP guys
  • Tomb Raider 2013 - not only was it tacked on an terrible they even had Trophies/Achievements for it just to really rub it in

I'm not sure Mass Effect needed an MP mode but it at least wasn't tacked on and seemed decent enough so I guess I'll have to give that one a pass. Same for TLOU MP - had no interest as such as the core game didn't suit it but the way they did it worked nicely and relied more on the background world of the game than the game itself.

Definitely Assassin's Creed for me.

Even though they've had it for the last 4 games it never seems to improve in any aspect. Multiplayer in those games tends to be a technical mess with crappy servers and probably the worst matchmaking I've ever tried to use.

I hope they reinvent multiplayer for Unity. Granted I don't expect a whole lot since it's a yearly release on an extremely strict schedule but the potential is definitely there if they'd take the time to do it right.

Tomb Raider multiplayer was pretty tacked on too but I managed to find some enjoyment out of it nonetheless. The traps and stuff were pretty cool.

Dead Space 2.
In the end, I don't think EA even liked it.
It had a nice community for a few months after the release on 360. I also bought it on the PS3 when it was in a sale (Halloween maybe), and there were still people playing.

Now I'm curious about the PC version. Might have to fire it up this evening and see if I can find a match.

Tomb Raider
Max Payne 3

Character movement really bad, sluggish, just a mess

Mass Effect 3 and TLOU multiplayer is well done for 3rd person games so they are bad choices as just tacked on.

Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't metroid prime 2s multiplayer based on a poll Nintendo held asking fans what they wanted to see in prime 2?

I remember multiplayer winning that poll. Hard to blame Nintendo for including a tacked on portion when it was the biggest request.

Almost all console FPSs that aren't CoD, Halo, Battlefield or, more recently, Titanfall.

You can't be serious. Halo's multiplayer is usually pretty good. Battlefield's single player is tacked on. There isn't a multiplayer to tack on in Titanfall, since it's only a multiplayer game.

Max Payne 3

HAHAHAHAHA. No.

Max Payne 3 multiplayer was ridiculously fun. It's one of the best examples of a single player focused franchise adding a multiplayer component but actually doing it well. I'm not saying the mp was perfect. It had some issues but overall it was well executed and super fun to play. The worst thing I can say about the multiplayer in MP3 is the fact they split the userbase between free aim and lock on. If there's a Max Payne 4 I'll be very disappointed if multiplayer doesn't return. They better make free aim the only option in multiplayer as well.

Haha I like many came in here to say Metroid Prime 2.

Although Prime Hunters was not tacked on and was so much damn fun. I would LOVE a new one on 3DS. Oh man that would be great. Still can't believe how good it looked and played on the DS. So much damn fun.

I like the way you think.

I know a lot of people thought the Condemned 2 multi-player was tacked on, but I thought it was kind of fun... mostly because I was actually decent at it.

Probably seen as such due to the fact that the game otherwise takes itself super-seriously in terms of story, character, setting and presentation, and is actually trying to say sobering (if cliched) things about society and people. Bolting a frenetic party free-for-all onto it is kind of the tacky, commercial equivalent of promoting Children of Men with McDonalds Happy Meals.

Metroid Prime 2's MP was ace.

that has nothing to do with it being "tacked on"

The Darkness MP was just plain awful. Laggy as shit and a complete cluster fuck of design. I'd also throw in Stranglehold.

Rare admitted that GoldenEye's multiplayer was done in a month. In retrospect it is a bit light on features (not to imply it wasn't terrific fun at the time).
"at the time" is the key really, because I think it was pretty damn good as well. I even think it had enough maps, modes and weapons to give it real longevity. I can completely see how it took a month though.
