Most underrated games you have played

bioforge-box.jpg

BioForge, MS-DOS exclusive. For the sci-fi fan, a spectacular adventure. Overlooked at the time because of high system requirements (my 486DX2 66 struggled to play on 1995) and not so good fighting mechanics -- which is a minor, very minor part of the overall experience.

The game is about sci-fi mood, working with computers ingame, solving puzzles and understanding "who you are".

If you love sci-fi AND videogames, BioForge is perfect.

Oh, and very first time on gaming that textures was mapped on top of polygons. It's an Origin game (not the digital distribution service lol), published by EA at the time. Richard Garriot (Ultima/electronic RPG pioneer) was involved on BioForge also.

And yes, ED-209 makes an appearance as awesome as his role on Robocop. OH YEAH. :)

No seriously, it's good!

Granted, I did only play the Demo, and am still planning to buy it, but oh my God, was the demo a lot of fun.

It was oddly satisfying to Design something and be first when showing off those Designs alongside other Designers.

It's a Game clearly aimed at a female Audience, but if you are not insecure about your Gender you will enjoy this.

One of Nintendos most underrated Series

So I skimmed the thread quickly and saw no mention of Ninja Blade. Again :(

Its like it doesn't even exist on Gaf. Which is odd considering From Softwares name is on the box.

Anyway, I know the combat isn't super amazing, its 30fps, and half the game is a QTE (they're actually not that badly implemented as far as QTEs go) but i'll be damned if I wasn't smiling ear to ear the whole time. So much so, I beat it again for hell of it, something I rarely do these days. Its basically nine levels of ridiculous boss fights, with some of the most over the top-insane action you'll ever see.

Also much love to those that said Remember Me and Resonance of Fate. Great games in their own ways

My fav fps in the ps2 era

I loved this, also great voice acting and soundtrack was shocked that it was not Al Pacino who voiced this, who ever did the voice did a great job.

Xexex.

Konami's best shmup by far, but it got fucked with for its American arcade release and never had a home console version. It's only retail release is on the PSP as part of the Salamander pack.

It's basically Konami's version of R-Type with great production values and and a legendary soundtrack. One of the best shmups in my opinion.

Underrated? Isn't this heralded as one of the best DS games and won a few GOTYs? I loved it and many of my friends do, I don't think it went too far under the radar.

Not that I consider IGN to be the be-all and end-all of video games journalism, but this review shared a lot of the common criticisms at the time of release.

As said before in this thread, [Jisgsaw] best DS game imo.

People generally give Call of Juarez: Gunslinger the recognition it deserves, and The Cartel the justifiably derided. But people tend to forget/ignore the fact that both of the first two Call of Juarez games were very good.

This thread is about the games that you have played but weren't really talked about much.

This first game I felt was underrated because no one in my circle of friends ever talked about it, but Def Jam: Fight for NY. It was solid and seriously fun fighting game involving rappers and had good gameplay. And the moves were so satisfying. Another game that comes to mind is Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime for the Nintendo DS. I didnt really know what to expect considering I never played the Dragon Quest series, but what I got was a fun little action adventure romp with huge ass tank battles. It was so much fun and I hope to find it again sometime in the future.

So GAF, what are the games that you played, that you consider underrated?
Yes, Rocket Slime was one of my favorite DS games. I also have never played a main Dragon Quest game either. That game was so much fun. I wish the 3DS sequel would be released in NA.

Forgot about this. If this was under rated its a shame.

I've seen people shitting all over Acclaim here in NeoGAF, but I loved them.
One of my favourite franchises by them is Extreme G. Incredible sense of speed, nice sound design, great battling system. It saddens me that people just remember of Wipeout and F-Zero when talking about futuristic racers =]

Love this cover:

My picks:

Shadow of Destiny: a cool, unique adventure game with an interesting premise and 5 different endings.

The Mark of Kri: fun game, with a great art style and the beating loading screen to game transitions ever.

Second Sight: Psi Ops got the most coverage because it was more visceral in terms of gameplay, but Second Sight had the better story, and was made by the Timesplitters guys.

Folklore: criminally ignored and underrated. Beautiful music, graphics, and setting. It was like Labyrinth and Dark Crystal in video game form (as far as art design goes) the gameplay was like Pokemon for adults, and it was so addicting trying to capture all of the different folks, and then leveling them up to max.

Resistance 2 and 3: R2 gets so much shot for reasons I'm unsure of. Yes, the removal of the weapon wheel is a genuine gripe, but the single player campaign is long, varied, and had an interesting narrative that had a fantastically unexpected and shocking finale. Resistance 3 just continued that quality, with the same polish, and the triumphant return of the weapon wheel. I love the entire series, but think R2 has a bad wrap. R3 is excellent on its own.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of games, but these pop into my head the fastest whenever I think if underappreciated games.

Oh, Remember Me and Heavenly Sword also.

Do I need to play the first 2 games to know what is going on? Hear a lot of people say 3 is amazing, but my backlog is fucking huge.

I played all three in order myself, but I think you'd be fine jumping right into the third. I just checked, and right after loading the game, a short animated recap outlines the alternate history of the world as seen in the first two games. When starting a new game, you get another animated recap on a more personal level. If you watch both, I don't think you'd have any problems understanding the world and the plot. (The second recap starts with a major spoiler for the ending of R2, though, so it's not a good idea to play R3 first if you're ever going to play R2).

I think poor marketing has hurt this game, I wouldn't have found out about it myself if I didn't thoroughly search through PSN for games like this. I took a risk, and I have been getting my moneys worth everyday either by myself or with friends. Great gameplay, Outstanding music, charming art style, and mechanics that go beyond what you would expect at first glance. I was NOT a fan of Mercenary Kings, but this is pure gold.

Similar to Towerfall Ascension, which is also a MUST.

It's a really fun Ikari Warriors/Metal Slug clone with branching paths. There was a resort my family went to that had a MVS with this game and my brother and I played the shit out of it. I never ever see anyone talk about it though.

the Shinobi series, particularly the Genesis games (2/3 are my favorite but Shadow Dancer is a really close 2nd), are absolute classic platformer/adventure/run-and-guns that tend to get overlooked. the music is really incredible late-80s FM synth fusion. some of it is death metal techno, some of it is ninja new jack swing. it's all badass. the gameplay is so finely-tuned. you get to use throwing stars, wall-jumps, horseriding skills, surf tricks, etc. the levels are insane, from 80s malls to ancient temples w secret underground passages to futuristic elevators rising through towering technoscapes to highways full of oncoming cars and leaping killer nuns. the fights? Spider-Man and Batman and The Terminator and Godzilla, all bosses in the same game!!! - can any other game series compare to that?
