omg yes pls

I think you put the word "boxed" in the search by accident. Try this.

Unless you expect Nintendo to do a physical release of a GBA game.

As I said, you can get a physical copy of the game at a reasonable price and play the fan translation right now.

As much as I'd love to be proven wrong... it just isn't happening.

We only got Beginnings because it already had an official translation. Selling it at a premium was just exploiting the rabid Earthbound fanbase overseas. Of course they might tease fans by mentioning how great sales for the rest are, but I get the feeling that's just drumming up more hype to get people to buy those games. If it takes more effort than simply dumping a ROM, NOA just won't do it.
Tomato has offered the very well made fan translation of Mother 3 to Nintendo for free. This is also a version with "this is a free translation" splash screen removed (that screen also served as anti-piracy, the whole games text rendering would fall apart if you tried to edit or remove it).

Of course it is still unlikely NOA will pick up on the offer (if anything out of fear of more offers being unleashed...which might not be a bad thing if they're interested in the preservation of old games and since modern treehouse translations are becoming a bit J2E in places...).

They definitely won't work on scratch given the problems the translation had on the text rendering front (and the glitches became stupid memes like "welcome to th :L")

If we keep demanding it, Mother 3 will come. We just have to keep being loud, and it will come...

Seriously though, they've got to know that the demand is there. Just translate it and put it on the eShop. It's one of those things like Shenmue III where people will probably check it out (or in Shenmue III's case, donate to it) just because it's such a well-known cult favorite.

Yeah, ideally they would just take the professional-grade fan translation (headed by an actual Funimation-employed translator) already available at no cost... But of course, this is NOA we're talking about here. It's definitely possible, but with the level of incompetence we've come to expect over the years I doubt they'd be willing to swallow their pride even if it meant guaranteed sales.

But like I said, I'd be happy to be proven wrong!

If Nintendo can fix the issues the game has running on emulators (the rhythm aspects in battle), I'd gladly pick it up.

The problem is I can't tell which ones are/aren't bootlegs, and bootlegs are pretty common as far as GBA games go.

Actually, I'm sure most most of those are bootlegs because they have ESRB ratings.

Well ya, you're not going to find cheap Japanese versions of the game anymore, it's been years since they even came out on GBA. Releasing the Japanese version in the West is about as pointless as releasing an English only version in Japan, you either pony up for a real version if you want the original or be fine with never getting an official release here.

Posting that I fully believe we'll get Mother 3 here eventually. After Earthbound and especially Earthbound Zero out of nowhere I think Mother 3 (Earthbound 2?) is a no brainer.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the game is announced for the games 10th anniversary next year or during the upcoming E3 Digital Event. With this and the spontaneous release of the other two here it's completely plausible.

The only annoying thing is that Nintendo gave up on GBA VC on 3DS... This would be fantastic on the handheld.

GBA games on 3DS VC were never a thing aside from the 10 GBA games that were a part of the 3DS Ambassador program and those were just plain dump ROMs with no 3DS system optimization.

The difference between releasing the game in Japanese here and the game in English in Japan is that the game is officially only in English right now. Unless they license Mato's fan translation, and I'm not sure if they'll want to. And they've done it with other games before, like Sin and Punishment on the VC.

Sin and Punishment was an English translation - it had English menus, unlike the version originally released in 2000.

just play the japanese version with a fan translation
is keeping your morals really worth not playing such an amazing RPG?

I'm slowly starting to feel like playing it on my PSP is as close as I'll get to the legit experience (I've finished it). It was like 3 months between between EB on JP VC and NA VC, so I'll give them till March or so to make an announcement.

For one, Chapter 8 uses Erik Satie's Gymnopédie No. 1 during an important sequence. Public domain laws differ between countries, but Sakai-san said licensing would be tricky.
That has to be public domain everywhere though. Even Killer 7 has it!

Well, I never thought we'd see Mother 1 released on the NA VC, so I believe Mother 3 can certainly happen. When is the question...

It will happen eventually, I believe that 100%. We just have to wait, maybe next E3.

Why don't you just buy any of the English GBA cartridges people have produced over the years?

Like, they are hugely abundant and easy to buy.

After thinking this over, it feels to me like if they released it as a standalone game in addition to a digital VC purchase, it might sell more copies.

The VC feels like the perfect place for ports, not entirely newly localized titles. I know that Earthbound Beginnings was never officially released in NA, but the localization was complete (and it's also an extremely old NES game)

Mother 3 on the NA VC would be a megaton announcement, but considering Lucas is a Smash 4 character and they're producing Amiibo, it could be so much bigger.

With Nintendo doing Sony style fan wish fulfillment announcements with Dragon Quest VII/VIII and Cloud Strife in Smash, I wouldn't be surprised to see another 3 getting an official US release. Well, I would be... But Nintendo is trying to do better and this is one of those opportunities.

On top of that, the timing for combos isn't a bit off like it is when played on nearly every GBA emulator, since it's being played on actual hardware.

Yeah, it's perfect.

I know people still want an official release. No emulator or fan translation will ever be that. But some people don't seem to realize that fans released Mother 3 in the west years ago. You have been able to play Tomato's translation on original hardware since pretty much the day it was finished.

Lots of people just bought the Japanese print for posterity and one of the English cartridges to actually play.

Aren't these basically illegal?

Are they? Nintendo has never flagged them. There are businesses that specialize in making cartridges for unreleased games. Mother 3 and Binding Blade are popular prints.

Isn't the idea that you buy a legitimate copy (to have the license) and then the localized fan copy to play for yourself?

In any case, I'll remove the link.

Yeah, I did just that for both Earthbound Zero/Beginnings and Mother 3.

Still bought Beginnings on VC to support the series, though. If Mother 3 does come our way, I'll buy that too, despite owning it twice over.

The problem with NOA putting it on the NA VC is the fact that they have to go through the process of localizing it. Mother 1 was lucky to already have a localized prototype lying around that was just never officially released at retail.

Perhaps it's time for Nintendo to take the Valve approach and buy the fan translation for official use.

This is pretty much standard operating procedure for Mother fans. "Support the official release" is more than just a splash image.

Mother 3 is already localized, but by fans, though.

The fans have offered their translation without royalties, free of charge to Nintendo.

If Mother 1 and 2 heck even the gen 1 Pokémon game get a virtual console release, I believe that Mother 3 will finally get localized in the West.

Gave up, when did they even start?
