I think you put the word "boxed" in the search by accident. Try this.
Tomato has offered the very well made fan translation of Mother 3 to Nintendo for free. This is also a version with "this is a free translation" splash screen removed (that screen also served as anti-piracy, the whole games text rendering would fall apart if you tried to edit or remove it).As much as I'd love to be proven wrong... it just isn't happening.
We only got Beginnings because it already had an official translation. Selling it at a premium was just exploiting the rabid Earthbound fanbase overseas. Of course they might tease fans by mentioning how great sales for the rest are, but I get the feeling that's just drumming up more hype to get people to buy those games. If it takes more effort than simply dumping a ROM, NOA just won't do it.

Of course it is still unlikely NOA will pick up on the offer (if anything out of fear of more offers being unleashed...which might not be a bad thing if they're interested in the preservation of old games and since modern treehouse translations are becoming a bit J2E in places...).
They definitely won't work on scratch given the problems the translation had on the text rendering front (and the glitches became stupid memes like "welcome to th :L")

Unless you expect Nintendo to do a physical release of a GBA game.
As I said, you can get a physical copy of the game at a reasonable price and play the fan translation right now.
The problem is I can't tell which ones are/aren't bootlegs, and bootlegs are pretty common as far as GBA games go.
Actually, I'm sure most most of those are bootlegs because they have ESRB ratings.
The only annoying thing is that Nintendo gave up on GBA VC on 3DS... This would be fantastic on the handheld.
Well ya, you're not going to find cheap Japanese versions of the game anymore, it's been years since they even came out on GBA. Releasing the Japanese version in the West is about as pointless as releasing an English only version in Japan, you either pony up for a real version if you want the original or be fine with never getting an official release here.
The difference between releasing the game in Japanese here and the game in English in Japan is that the game is officially only in English right now. Unless they license Mato's fan translation, and I'm not sure if they'll want to. And they've done it with other games before, like Sin and Punishment on the VC.
What issues?
just play the japanese version with a fan translation
is keeping your morals really worth not playing such an amazing RPG?
That has to be public domain everywhere though. Even Killer 7 has it!For one, Chapter 8 uses Erik Satie's Gymnopédie No. 1 during an important sequence. Public domain laws differ between countries, but Sakai-san said licensing would be tricky.

I'm slowly starting to feel like playing it on my PSP is as close as I'll get to the legit experience (I've finished it). It was like 3 months between between EB on JP VC and NA VC, so I'll give them till March or so to make an announcement.
Why don't you just buy any of the English GBA cartridges people have produced over the years?
Like, they are hugely abundant and easy to buy: http://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/231588825650
On top of that, the timing for combos isn't a bit off like it is when played on nearly every GBA emulator, since it's being played on actual hardware.

Aren't these basically illegal?
Lots of people just bought the Japanese print for posterity and one of the English cartridges to actually play.

Yeah, I did just that for both Earthbound Zero/Beginnings and Mother 3.
Still bought Beginnings on VC to support the series, though. If Mother 3 does come our way, I'll buy that too, despite owning it twice over.
The problem with NOA putting it on the NA VC is the fact that they have to go through the process of localizing it. Mother 1 was lucky to already have a localized prototype lying around that was just never officially released at retail.
