movie theater seat etiquette

How about when you're 30 minutes in and you desperately want some more candy, so you put your hand in the plastic bag and it makes an abnormally loud rustling noise that never occurs outside of the cinema. You keep digging and digging and it gets louder and louder and you're like "oh god, I'm ruining this movie for everyone." So you look at the dude next to you and he's not looking at you so you finish up as quick as you can and you pull out the candy and eat it then lean back like "yeah man...I made it."

I won't say I've never put my feet up, and because of that I'm not going to condemn the OP for it. People do it, I've done it. I don't do it much at all, but I did do it once recently when I was really uncomfortable and nobody else was nearby. The seats at the old theatre near me can get quite uncomfortable.

I used to do it often as a kid.

I wish my local theatres had lounge chairs like in the picture. The newer one at least has reclining ones, and is a lot more comfortable as a result.

Then stop compliaining about other people in the theater if you are going to be a dick and put your feet up.

Where did I complain? I asked if it was normal behavior to want to sit so close to someone in such an empty theater. Saying I had my feet up was only used to illustrate my comfort. I was settled in and ready for the movie to start. I moved over without any issue.

people want to sit in the middle of the theater. you should know, you sat in the middle of the theater.

It's not normal behavior to want to put your feet up in public, just like it is not normal behavior to walk around topless and in your boxers in public. If you want to do that shit, rent a movie digitally at home.

I mean, if you want to put your feet up in a theater than that's on you, it's weird, but on you, but you then don't have the right to complain when someone ruins that.

i'm very picky about being level with the screen and in the middle if i'm really looking forward to the movie.

in this case, i would've looked for center seats on the next row down, leaving a gap for you

My new theater pet peeve is when someone puts their feet up on the seat next to me. I'm sorry, but I don't want your fucking shoe 3 feet from my head, put it down.

This is exactly why I prepare beforehand. You poor the candy into the theater box and toss the plastic!

As for the seat thing... seats are gross enough, no one wants whatever you tracked in all over them, especially if people have to clean them afterwards. The only time this is okay really is if you're in like the front row and they have those rails in front of you.

Can't stand people talking during the whole movie. Go to a cafe if you wanna talk.

If I put my feet up in the theater I definitely only do it once I'm sure no one else is coming in and certainly not if there is anyone nearby, I'm in public this isn't my home.

I also make sure to go at a time when the movie had been out for awhile and before noon to avoid people with no awareness of their surroundings....its worked out well.

People don't what to sit in front of you, OP. People want to sit at that angle and distance from the screen, you just happen to be near it and they are not willing to compromise their viewing experience.

some seats are better than others, it is as simple as that.

You don't have a right to put your feet up, but most people would sit somewhere else. But if the seats are in the middle (where most people sit), then that's a different story since those seats are the best for viewing.

I'm concerned about the people who inhabited the seat before than soley being focused on someone putting their feet on a portion of the seat my body may never touch. A theater is a incubator for all kinds of nasty germs, let's not pretend for a second that someone propping their feet up amounts to anything in the grand scheme of things.

As for the OP's direct question: I would not have sat in front of you, especially if there were plenty of other options. Not because you had your feet up but because it makes no sense to me to sit directly in front of someone in a theater when there are other options that allow both of us to have great viewing experiences. Granted I never go to the theater anymore because as evident by this thread and my own experiences people don't care about showing others common courtesy any more.

Obviously everyone wants to be centered in front of the screen. Why should they have to watch at an angle just so you can have your feet up?

I mean putting your feet up on seats in front of you at the movies is pretty normal if nobody is sitting in those seats yet, but don't act all indignant when someone chooses to sit in front of you. They can sit anywhere you want.

I just read the OP so bear with me if it already has been said.

Don't put your filthy shoes where other people sit.

Edit: Well damn...

Feet on the ground dude. How old are you? Six?

I put my feet up if nobody is around. Let me ask some of you this, the feet are touching the back of the seats, its not like people arch their legs over the top of the seat where the bottoms would hit where peoples heads rest. People don't even touch that part of the seat at all.

And secondly, the dude sitting in the seat before you might have had some mighty swamp ass and was ripping farts right into the seats fabric. Even if its not that, you could be sitting in filth.

Now I ask, which is worse?

I understand that its etiquette, but to do it when nobody is around and only touching the back side of the seat I found completely acceptable. Now if one forcefully pushes the seat forward using strength which could potentially mess up the seat, that's wrong too.

If there isn't one person in the row in front of me I'm putting my feet up, sorry.

One being worse doesn't make the other acceptable.

It's an unspoken etiquette but they're allowed to sit wherever they want.

Kind of like if you were in an empty bathroom with 16 urinals, and someone decides to use the one right next to yours all the way in the back.

They're totally allowed to do that but, who's not going to question that?

I'll let the "feet on the seats" this lie, because you've hopefully been scolded enough. I was curious though: OP, where did five rows from the back put you? I ask because if that put you slightly in the center of the auditorium, maybe they sat in front of you because they prefer the middle of the auditorium. You said you are in the middle of the row, right? I prefer the middle of the theater, slightly more towards the top if it is kind of packed and that area is taken. If someone is in the area I like and a row is open above or below them, I'll take it over taking the same row but sitting off-center to the right or left of center-screen.

Geez, apparently had hates feet on seats. I understand if the place is full but OP said there was about 8 people.

It's not a dick move. They saw an empty theatre and sat in an empty seat. You shouldn't put your shoes on the seat anyways, it's dirty and not designed for that. I get it, some find it comfy, but it doesn't mean people should accommodate what you want. I also hate people who block others from reclining.

Never said it was "acceptable", but when there is not a soul in the row in front of you or even around you at all, what is the harm when the person who would ever sit in that seat in front of me would not know or touch the surface that my foot was on? That is my point.

If there are people even in the row in front of you, one shouldn't do it. You can see the feet in your peripherals. But if done like how I've explained I just do not see the issue.

It isn't that abnormal. People like to be where the "good seats" are. I go to the movies a lot, usually the showings are mostly empty because I'll hit up matinees on Sunday or Tuesday night. Even then, you notice that people tend to cluster together towards the middle row of seats. I prefer to be on the end in case I need to use the restroom. But you got the folks that like being in the middle back so they can see the whole screen, and the people that like being in the middle middle because it's their sweet spot. You can pretty much eliminate the way front as an option because I've never seen someone sit there unless it was a packed showing and they had to.

People sit where they want to sit, and have every right to. Is it weird to sit in front of people in an empty theater, maybe, but if they don't put their feet up on the seat, then it might never have registered that it could be a problem.

And you shouldn't really be putting your feet on the seat anyway, I wouldn't want to sit there in that situation.
