"Yeah, the movie doesn't look great, but you know what really sucks? How this provides cover for the fucking awful aspects of "geek culture" to pound their chests self-righteously and make shit worse for all of us"

That's the basic thesis, in case you were curious.

(his accent is a lot more pronounced in this than I've noticed it before. Something about Ghostbusters seems to bring that out in people)

Saw the first 10 seconds and... yeah, I'ma have to give this a watch.

This whole nonsense with Ghostbusters has been an embarrassment ever since it was announced that it would be starring women. I'm glad we're finally getting some pushback towards these terrible attitudes.
Sometimes I feel alone in my excitement for this movie. I think it's going to be pretty dope.

I've been looking forward to it ever since the second trailer.

The whole thing in a nutshell. Makes me embarrassed, to be honest.

I think it depends on what Melissa we get. If we get Bridesmaids McCarthy it will be hilarious. If we get Tammy McCarthy well...

Ialso am not a fan of the black woman's act. Feels too "bamboozled" to me.

Her role was written as Bridesmaid's McCarthy, and then before filming that role was swapped with Leslie Jones's role.

So you're probably gonna end up closer to "Sookie St. James"-style Melissa McCarthy, and "Melissa McCarthy"-style Leslie Jones.

Wow, that is a really insightful video. I've gone through hundreds of posts about this debate and still was introduced to multiple new perspectives.

I have to give this guy a sub, I wonder if all his stuff is this good.

Not really. His standard movie reviews are mostly a constant spew of vile and reductive one-liners that seem to cater to the juvenile crowd that likes non-stop swearing and other mean-spirited criticisms.

Well, his recent ones have done. His escapist movie reviews are better. And 'really that good' is great.

I basically agree.

Movie looks like crap so far... But its annoying how many people are excited that it looks bad because they get to be "right" about "Sjw adgenda ruining our franchises!"

Fair enough, I'm watching one of his gaming videos and (lame humor aside) it seems just as informative and well thought out.

Maybe it's just his standard movie reviews that are structured in that manner.

Noted. That's still quite a few hours of quality content to check out later. Awesome.

Yeah, Really That Good was alright. But I found it really rich of him to complain about how the internet is a place of cynicism and vitriol, even though he actively contributes to that.

I think his Pixels review was kinda a turning point. Since then a lot of his reviews have been far more sweary and reductive. He seems to either really like something or thinks it's complete trash nowadays.

I really hate the whole angry reviewer schtick, much prefer it when people explain the complex ways something is good but he seems to have been catering more to the cynicism demographic over the past year

His Pixels review went viral, which was the first review he went very sweary on. So he adopted the style for a while. I think he getting over it now if the Apocalypse review is anything to go by. There a two things that could help his channel immensely to grow IMO:

Find a format that can be put out on a fixed and regular schedule.
Consolidate all of his conten on one channel (which he has started doing if this video is anything to go by).

I'm currently contributing to the MB pattern (OT) but I'm very annoyed about the lack of a steady stream of content. I know he writes stuff over on screen rant, but we used to get two video a week on the escapist, now we get a few videos every 2 months or so, depending on the movie schedule and what not.

Sad that feeling hopefull about this movie helps the stakes of minority centered movies ... it is the industry that sad female leads in action movies did not gave money in the climax of the Hunger Games franchise =P

Tend to like movie bob's stuff even if I don't often agree with his opinions, so should be good.

SHOULD be good ... I love when OP does not read OP xD

All I'm going to do is not see the movie. Makes me wonder how many people bitching and moaning about it will still line up on day one to see it so they can bitch even more, thus making the movie a success. /sigh

Definitely watching this when I get home.

I hope the movie does well enough. There's no reason to hate it until we know the entire context. If it actually sucks then you can all go off on it as it'll be deserved.

I agree that misogynists have hurt the conversation for this film.

I don't agree hating on the film before we even saw a single screen was wrong.

Jumanji is getting remade, and despite having seen nothing from the film, I'm annoyed and plain disappointed that it's getting made in the first place.

We'll all have the exact same reactions when further beloved classics get announced for remake, including:

The Goonies
Die Hard
Labyrinth

and the big one
Back to the Future

His line about how the remake had potential because it could emphasize the originals themes of being alienated from the establishment STEM community as well as the struggles of running a small business venture by highlighting how much more difficult for women is one of my favorite comments I've seen about the whole Ghostbusters thing

I still have hopes for this movie, but I think I agree with this video on just about every point, on the balance.

Jumanji is getting remade, and despite having seen nothing from the film, I'm annoyed and plain disappointed that it's getting made in the first place.

Why?

Jumanji wasn't very good. It's one of Joe Johnston's more mediocre films. The whole thing is kinda dumb and shrill. That's a great example of a movie that should have another crack at realizing the potential of its concept.

When the Goonies finally gets remade I'll welcome that too, because The Goonies is worse than Jumanji was.

The Labyrinth sequel is a continuation, from what I understand.

This whole fucking controversy is just stupid on both sides. So what if someone doesn't want to see a movie? God damn, it's not like he reviewed the film and gave it a zero just because.

Yeah I was disappointed to see him lean into that in the wake of the Pixels review, but there does seem to have been a course correction. Back when he did regular movie reviews for the Escapist he was one of my favorite film critics, hands down. I mean, who else put as much thought into their reviews of things like Warm Bodies for crying out loud?

"both sides!"

Both sides of what?

Your response makes it sound like you think this video is a response to Rolfe's. It isn't.

BttF is my favorite trilogy of all time, and I really want a reboot of it. I think it could be explored in new ways if done right. No one has a problem with Rick and Morty.

There are no "sides" here, just ways of interpreting the backlash against the marketing of this film. If you watch the video you quickly learn that the reactionary group of gentlemen who realllly don't like women are ruining the ability to talk about this film critically for everyone else. Put another way, it is nobody else's fault that discussion of the film has grown so poisonous. It is not the fault of the people pointing out the rampant misogyny behind that fork of the backlash. It is not the fault of the filmmakers who decided to take this reboot in this direction. It's all on the "No Ma'am" Club for creating the toxicity.

Part of it is. The stuff about passing the torch is in response to Rolfe. The whole part about the original still being there is less about the misogyny aspect about more about the nostalgia/fanboys.

I would love to see someone take another stab at the Goonies because the Goonies is...kind of terrible. But I also don't know what that sort of reimagining looks like in the culture of 2016

Not really. It's not like Rolfe invented that scenario, or popularized it as a "what-if" regarding the film's direction.

Are you watching the video right now?

Yeah, helicopter parenting makes the premise of that movie kinda unbelievable now.

I agree with a lot of what he says, except,
A) I don't think sexist assholes make nuanced discussions about the movie impossible, just a little more difficult. Hell, this video is proof of that. He's able to give his thoughts on the movie just fine. The real problem is that the sexist assholes are sexist assholes.
B) I liked the Willy Wanka remake.
C) I don't think the original Ghostbusters is some lightning-in-a-bottle classic. It's part of why I don't care much about what happens with this movie either way; I have no attachment to the original franchise.
D) I think the trailers look alright.

Not really. It's not like Rolfe invented that scenario, or popularized it as a popular "what-if" regarding the film's direction.

Are you watching the video right now?

Already watched it. I hadn't seen anybody discussing the whole 'passing the torch' being an actual issue until the past month. Yes the crux about what he's talking about is referring to the misogynists but it's also directed to the fanboys who don't want the original tainted in general.

Hating any remake before it happens and before you see it is stupid.

Including the big one which everyone paranoidly mentions as if it's just about to be announced.

He's very right. Fans, predominantly white males, had it out for this movie long before a single frame was shown and act like their preemptive criticism is validated because of the trailers. And those people can go fuck themselves. It's hard for me to believe that if there were 4 males in the role that most of these assholes wouldn't at least say 'yeah, it looks like shit, but I'll see it because it's Ghostbusters.' They're manchildren that act like their toys are being taken away from them and made to share.

And I laugh whenever I hear anyone proclaim that it's a 'great franchise'. It's one great movie and a shitty sequel -- with the name being used to sell toys, cereal, TV shows and video games. Just because it's profitable doesn't make it some sacred cow. It's impossible for this movie to hurt the name, because that's been happening since '89.

I've come to grips with the fact that nothing is sacred and everything will be done again later on down the line. It's nothing to get upset about.

Then you haven't been looking hard. It's come uo repeatedly in every GB thread here and elsewhere since it was announced as a universe reboot.
