The bible.

... But more seriously:

Primer

There was no real bad guy, but you knew it was going to be sinister.

Along those lines: The CUBE trilogy

I'm looking and looking, don't see it...

Arlington Road, duh

I see it now :(

This one stands out to me the most.

It's not a pyrrhic victory, but TOTAL.

I was gonna post it if no one else did. The ending of that movie totally pissed me off, but in a good way. It evoked emotion. It was successful in that regard.

Ah, most of what I thought were already mentioned..Usual Suspects, Se7en, Dark Knight, so how about Transformers (animated)? With Unicron's body being destroyed, the really actual BAD guy, Galvatron, is no longer under Unicron's thumb.

And what about most zombie movies? Night of the Living Dead pissed me off in that aspect (but in a good way).

If i remember correctly, didn't the bad guy release the virus at the end of it.
the female insurance agent at the end is one of the scientists, so they do get the sample of the virus

Amadeus counts, right?
Mozart dies, Salieri didn't get what he wanted and ended up ranting in an asylum.
Everybody loses!

A Bridge Too Far. Operation Market Garden was a total disaster, even though the allies had Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Gene Hackman and Robert Redford fighting at their side.

I'm getting pretty sure getting eaten qualifies as losing.

He got exactly what he wanted. He wanted the 2nd impact to happen and everyone to become orange juice. His vision was violent yes, but he ended up just where he wanted to.

Caused chaos in Gotham
Killed Rachel
Led to Dent's revenge mode
Didn't die
Gave the town a better class of criminals, basically by killing the old ones

How didn't he win? By not
making Bats kill him?
Not a perfect victory, but I say he won.

I would argue Gary Oldman from the Professional. Sure, he blows up at the end...but he does shoot the main protagonist in the back of the head ... smug bastard!

The Wicker Man
Those crazy pagans! Killing Nick Cage won't bring back their god damn honey :lol

(I'm aware it was a remake)
