I recently re-watched The Ninth Gate by Polanski, and I have to say; this movie has fucking great atmosphere.

Incase you haven't seen that, the atmosphere is similar to Se7en. A 'fog' has shrouded the whole movie. I just love when movies get the atmosphere right.

So, recommend me some movies that have amazing atmosphere. Doesn't HAVE to be dark and gloomy.

My fav movies that really draw me in:

No Country for Old Men
Jacob's Ladder
The Prestige
Black Death
Black Swan
Stalker
Alien
Ran

EDIT: To be clear, a big part of atmosphere for me is not necessarily the set design, lighting, etc., but those elements in combination with the actual story, acting, etc. Anything that really draws me in from start to finish., where I'm pulled INTO that world, is atmosphere.

All of them.

I knew someone would say this, but not true imo. There are some great movies out there, in which they don't rely on the atmosphere at all. Some movies are more about character, dialogue, music etc.

p.s pardon me if you were being sarcastic or trolling. ;p

It only depicts pretty much everything perfectly.

Children of Men comes to mind.

I Am Legend I thought was done well in that regard

Matrix

Dracula

I may being mixing mood and atmosphere though

The Shining
The Thing
The Descent
Event Horizon

One movie that rarely gets talked about but has amazing atmosphere for the genre is NARC. One of my favorite crime movies for how bleak it feels.

i've been really obsessed with Zéro de conduite and the atmosphere in that movie.

I think traditionally i think Vertigo and Detour have the best and most engaging atmosphere in movies.

Some good ones mentioned already, but I have to highlight Alien due to the great juxtaposition between the sterile lifeless environment, and the ravenous, ultra-violent creature hiding in it. This also carries over to the crew who act, mostly, professional and low key beforehand.

Speaking purely in terms of atmosphere, the unbelievability of the third act of Sunshine really pulled me out of the movie. I know people have strong opinions on that and I'm not trying to get into a debate, but I loved the atmosphere up until that point--very ominous.
I completely understand that, but I don't think it should overshadow what was achieved during the first two acts. That said, I still enjoyed the final third of the film and thought it took on a more dream like feeling to coincide with their closing distance to the sun.

I edited my reply just because I don't even want to risk junking up this thread, but thanks for the level-headed response. I still like the movie and love the majority of it.

Any Michael Mann movie really...particularly Collateral and Heat. He did a good job with the atmosphere of the Miami Vice show too.

I'd also throw in a vote for Lost in Translation as well

I hate obvious atmosphere. Like Tim Burton.

Yea but Beetlejuice was a sick romp.

Oh and what about Tarsem Singh's The Fall? I think that could be a worthy contender.
