Movies With Great Endings (Spoilerz Ahead)

I just finished watching Hancock, and while it was a pretty good movie, it's ending left a lot to be desired. So I started thinking about how a lot of Will Smith movies seem to have poor endings. And then I started thinking about how a lot of movies in general, even great movies, have poor endings. I now I'm depressed thinking Hollywood has lost it's ability to build of an exciting and interesting plot, and ending it properly.

So I ask GAF, what movies have really great endings. Where you leave very satisfied and feel you've gotten proper closure for your time spent watching it.

The Shawshank Redemption
Stand by Me
Cool Hand Luke

just a few off the top of my head

I know this is probably going to come off as a cliched GAF answer but the final scene of The Dark Knight gives me chills every time. Seriously a great, satisfying ending and is always the first that comes to mind when I get into discussions like this.

While I wouldn't consider it one of my favorite films, its ending is legendary.

Kill Bill
Inception
the prestige
silence of the lambs

I just watched The Dark Knight for the first time about 3 days ago and even though the whole movie was vastly overrated imo, the last 1/4 was easily the best part. I really loved how they brought Two-Face in as another super-villain, and also kept everything open for part 3.

The Usual Suspects.

I liked the film but I didn't understand how
the whole point of the job was to kill the old man that knew what Keyser Soze looked like, but in doing the job he not only left a hungarian alive, but he also became known to the police. So basically in doing the job and getting rid of one person, he only ended up revealing his secret to more people ???

Fight Club
The Silence of the Lambs
Memento
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs

edit - To add a more recent movie, I'd say 127 Hours. The last 10 minutes made the entire film worth watching.

While I wasn't totally thrilled by the film as a whole, The Blair Witch Project had a pretty kicking ending.

The old guy was supposed to die when the boat blew up.

I'm noticing a pattern with the Nolan movies. Well, the guy does know how to finish his movies.

I agree with all the Nolan picks too.

Here's a few of my own:

Rollerball (original)
Bladerunner
The Goonies
The Warriors
Enter the Dragon
Drunken Master II (it didn't really have an ending, but the final fight was awesome)
The Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
The Lion King

Really?

Inception getting that much love?

It was deliberately open-ended so you could put your own spin on it. How is that a good ending? Its sloppy writing. Nolan is great at creating momentum through the 1st act of a movie but in my opinion usually loses it somewhere in the 2nd act. With Inception, he managed to make it to the 3rd before copping out with that ending.

Blade Runner
Heat
The Departed
Alien

whats funny about this post is that inceptions ending is the same basic idea as blade runner lol

Liked Hancock, but should have had an epic storyline to go with the hero.

Going completely off the top of my head:

Matrix
Raiders
Children of Men
I've loved every PIXAR ending since Monsters, Inc.
Star Wars
Dark Knight
Speed Racer
How to Train Your Dragon
Kung Fu Panda
Avatar
Kill Bill

Not if you actually understood the ending of Blade Runner. One ending is definite. One is not.

Also, the alternate ending to Army of Darkness where
Ash takes too much of the sleeping potion and wakes up in the distant future only to discover that they blew it all up, those bastards.

There's nothing inherently wrong with open-ended endings.

In Inception's case, especially when they're not really open-ended.

I love that ending simply because of the
sense of accomplishment on everyone's faces. Dream or not, it was a success & Cobb lived happpily ever after.

The ending actually reminded me of Ocean's 11 when they are all standing outside the Belaggio. I would have included that one actually if not for the sequels.

Fuck yeah for Heat. Admittedly I'm biased as its my favorite movie, but its got one hell of an ending.

Take a minute to consider your achievement. I once told you about a sailor who drowned.

Yes, he said it was like going home.

I lied. He said it was agony.
