Movies with Largest Disparity when Ranked by Men vs Women on IMDB

Please discuss at your leisure.

Kinda interesting to see the Potter films skew so heavily female.

You also see a lot more men being really into Disney princess movies these days. So I guess it's not surprising for those to not have as big a presence as you might have expected in the past.

Those are all pretty good movies. Not sure what we're trying to prove here.
There are thousands and thousands of movies, and the biggest net ranking delta here is 690. I think men and women (in general) agree these are all fine movies.

With exceptions, I'd say this shows women more highly favor fantasy/historical fiction as comedy/musicals/romance, whereas men more highly favor historical fiction as action/dramas and sci-fi.

Written by a woman with all the light fantasy tropes that kids and women love.

Women like movies with female protagonists.

Men like movies with male protagonists.

It's not about the sex of the protagonists but about the topics and genre conventions.

It's both.

Yes, but genre conventions outweigh the sex factor. I write epic fantasy and 80% of my protagonists are female, but the saga is clearly male focused, due to its themes. I know what men expect to find in an epic fantasy and what women want. Though there's an overlap, the things they appreciate the most in a story are very different.

Maybe some influence, but look at how many protagonists in the women's list are men.
Less than half.

Plus, we're comparing 100 years of Hollywood here, which means women have been encouraged to watch male dominated stories for 90% of history.

I expect that list to skew drastically towards having more female protagonists over the next 10 years.

It's also possible that women are more political than men, which means they're more interested in navigating societal landscapes which men play a large part.

Men seem to want to go off and slay the dragon.

The word is "relatable". Right off the start, women wonder "how does this character or situation relate to me and why should I care?" Guys are more into abstract thinking. That's why in female literature the author tends to insert herself into the protagonist, which happens often in videogames. I avoid that by creating characters completely different from me. For guys it's easier.

When I ask beta readers if they spotted mistakes or plot holes, it's always men who dispute some of the rules of the fantasy world, or the economy of a particular kingdom. Women don't give a shit about that. It's characters what hooks them into the story. Just have a look at The Hunger Games. Its lore is absolutely nonsensical, but nobody cares. It's all about the personal struggles of the main character. In "male focused stories" that's a nono.

Wrong. It's exactly half.

I don't think this is a correct analysis of the data.

Women respond more to the emotional and relationship aspects of film, so those themes can be repeated and updated to newer iterations more easily. Men respond to specific external stimuli, action, and events and are much more willing to fixate on good examples, which is why there are older films that have stood the test of time for heroic masculine statements.

Though I suspect that if you look at the highest rated, but smallest delta films, it would be films with excellent technical qualities, a timeless story, AND proper emotional relationships for that crossover appeal.

The men's list has far more older films.

Edited because I was incorrect. Sound of Music is the oldest, not Edward Scissorhands on the women's list. Still, way more more recent films on the women's list.

Surprised no Arnold action movies appear on the men's list.

Every time movies get brought up at work, every female despises Arnold movies as the dumbest movies ever. Surprised not even one like Predator or Commando made it.

Women seem to go with the herd more in terms of being loyal to a fandom. You only have to think about absolutely nutty female driven online fandoms like kpop.

I think there's a less derogatory way to say that, but to your point, I bet if you did an average box office return (adjusted for inflation), the women's list would be way, way, way higher.

The women's ranking is skewed heavy to cartoons and Harry Potter being favs. This is what adult women like watching? LOL. I dont get a sense on IMDB you got tons of kids voting.

Precisely, I was thinking of Predator, a true action MASTERPIECE. I agree with Commando being dumb fun, but Predator has genius writing. One of the most underrated movies of all time, on par with Alien. The pacing, the character presentation, the memorable scenes, the genre-switch in the middle of the movie (just like Psycho). Stellar script.

Its only mistake (a big one) is spoiling that it's a sci-fi movie right at the beginning, something that back in the day you wouldn't know before watching the movie. The Thing makes the same mistake.

That might just be a result of the methodology. More of the movies on the men's list are also ranked lower for men than vice versa. Only 2 of the men's movies are below 100 for men.

non of them films would be in my top hundred

they are all quiet mediocre

rocky and edward scissorhands are probably the best two

The popularity of The Masked Singer on Fox is a harsher indictment on the gender than anything man has ever done in history, ever.

Didnt know that show was still on! I dont follow reality TV or any of those AGT kind of shows. The last time I watched one was Survivor Season 1. And then Season 2 for the first 2-3 episodes, then bailed as it was the same shit like winning contests for fire.

I only had four movies from each list which interested me.

From Women's I love Frozen, Sound of Music, The Notebook and Edward Scissorhands.

From Men's I love For a Few Dollars More, The Thing, Lawrence of Arabia and Bladerunner 2049.

So I suppose I have those genderfluids they talk about nowadays.

I wonder what the ratings for movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Singin' in the Rain and Sleepless in Seattle are. Also top favourites for me.

I've seen your top 100 and it was filled with movies that are mundane at best.

Stuff like Taare Zameen Par or Dangal makes me question if this list was done in India or something, certainly not in the West

I would rather watch the women's list, honestly

Can you help me better understand what you mean? I'm interested, but not following.

For the men's list only Once upon and 7 samurai are ranked less than 100 by men. On the women's list close to half are ranked less than 100 by women. So the men aren't ranking the movies on their list really high either, just a lot higher than the women.
