I tried to watch a movie, Only God Forgives, and I felt betrayed. It's over.
 
Electrick Children: 7/10. Cool debut feature from some lady about a young Mormon girl who's impregnated by a cassette tape. A bizarre premise that's still fun to watch play out despite all the coincidences that occur to keep the story moving forward, though I think it's supposed to have a fairly tale vibe to it. And the girl is super cute and has AWESOME hair, you'll be seeing much more of her in the future I'm sure. She's been in a few other things and already has creepsites devoted to her. The director is also very attractive which is irritating.
 
Tonight I will be watching ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK + LA, woo!

Also, we should probably vote for the next film club director before the month starts next time :p
 
LA is awful. It's basically the same movie but so much worse. And has some of the worst CGI I've ever seen in a movie with a pretty big budget
 
I watched Princess Mononoke for the first time (working my way through the Ghibli collection, expensive as that is to do) and it's-- it's just wonderful. The first Ghibli movie that entirely delivers on the hype for me - just the right mix of fantasy and reality, and really gruesome in places. Utterly fantastic.

Oh, and I saw an original reel of Leon, which is still one of my favourite movies ever. Aside from Nikita - which isn't entirely dissimilar - I don't think Besson's ever come close to this. The picture was showing its age; the film wasn't. Don't tell anyone but I actually prefer the extended version.
 
Three hours and I'll be watching Blue Jasmine. I want to watch Smiles of a Summer Night after that, just because I want to see another Bergman film (Sjöberg directed Torment, but it's Bergman's script).
 
Nobody cares about what Jacques Rivette has to say. And in the end I don't know what's worse, not understanding movies or not understanding audiences. I guess when you are too far in either scale, you end up forgotten and broke.
 
Well you care enough to post about not caring about him. I definitely think he has an audience, however limited by geography and his obscurity, and he's no Armond White to me.

I think he's wrong about young Cameron, but great artistry is partially about creating your OWN audience, rather than trying to cater to ones that already exist.
 
Pain and Gain

Went in expecting a drama, boy was I wrong.

The movie was awesome.

Loved The Rock and Mark was jacked.

LA is hilarious and dumb so go in with that mindset. I saw it only last year after avoiding it due to all the criticism it got, and I ended up loving it. Haters dun goofed

sleepless night: a ninety minute adrenaline shot of a cop thriller that takes place almost entirely in a night club. i was on the edge of my imaginary seat the entire time. sisley's fantastic as the lead.

only god forgives: kristin scott thomas almost entirely ruins the first half of this film. what a cringe-worthy, almost comedic performance. she's not as unbearable in the rest of the film, luckily. i was hoping
the fight at the end would be longer , but it looked very convincing
. the visuals and especially soundtrack are fantastic, though. i'll need to see it again, but it was decent enough.

audition: "kiri kiri kiri kiri kiri kiri...." oh, you fucking terrifying cunt. goddammit. there is something inherently creepy about a thin, pale japanese girl with black hair, but then again, i may have seen too many of these japanese horror films. great build-up, fantastic film.

to the wonder: i was expecting a lesser malick, but what i got was absolutely magnificent. is this guy even capable of making a bad film? the sparse-dialogue approach works, as expected, great, and certainly a lot better here than in, say, only god forgives. i was really familiar with kurylenko's work outside of quantum of solace, but she's a fantastic actress.

i read an interview where she mentioned how her character was supposed to be mentally ill, but i didn't really see it... am i the only one here? extroverted/out-going? sure. crazy? no.

ten hour director's cut please.

stoker: great visuals and... that's about it. zero tension. zero atmosphere.

goode is unwatchable.


i also finally saw park's vengeance trilogy in its entirety. mr. vengeance > oldboy > lady vengeance (this one didn't really do it for me).
 
It's a shame that the plotting in Sleepless Night can be so plodding at times. They really went out of their way to explain every single detail and left no stone unturned, outside of the admittedly fantastic ending.

When it is cooking, though, it's definitely got all of the burners on.
 
Watched The Box (2009) Was fairly boring, One was thing interesting/odd was the camera work they used. Basically all the scenes had this glowish type look idk. Anyone see it remember that look the scenes had

Pretty much. It's not as lean and mean as it could be, but when it's trying to be quick and punchy it's great.
 
lol I just saw the bluray cover for To the Wonder. Kurylenko has the whole shifty eyes thing going on, so you know she's up to no good.

I wasn't too impressed by the movie, but that might be because the "lady" I sat beside wouldn't shut up or put her phone down. I knew I picked the wrong seat after Malick's wife stopped talking and the "lady" said "what a terrible public speaker".

also I watched Speed Racer. love the color scheme, Christina ricci is super cute, some of the visuals amazed me, some parts were structured awkwardly, monkey and boy moments were the worst moments.

the whole super contrived plan of disguising ricci as an Asian man was amazing, especially after their plan was thwarted by the villains henchmen who appeared out of nowhere with guns but then the boy and monkey appeared out of nowhere with poo and saved them and then the family fought as a family with each member having different moves. that and the ending were the best parts. how can anyone hate this film?6/10

It wasn't good, it wasn't bad, it just was. I think I've come to the realization that I can't take Tom Cruise serious as an actor any more. All I saw was Tom Cruise running around in a jumpsuit with a toy gun and making "acting" faces. There was no real emotion behind any of it.
 
In A Lonely Place - My first real Ray (Macao doesn't really count, he only directed some of it) and damn was it a great place to start. Brilliant portrayal of the impenetrability of a creative personality, and how we're willing to overlook petulance and aggression and childish jealousy and distant pretension all because we believe in someone's ability to eventually create something worthwhile. Grahame and Bogart are delightful, deliver some perfectly witty pulp dialog and inhabit their characters beautifully.
Have to admit I'm not sure there was an element of the way it was directed that I could really pick out to use to say that I'm already in love with Ray specifically. The genius to me was in the script. Actually there was one moment: Dix's POV of Mildred. It's a strange choice, to shoot a conversation like that in first person, but it helps to explain how Steele is put off by mediocrity.

Despite some lukewarm reviews since its festival premiere I'm still really excited for it. MBJ's the dude.

Hey hey, Jodorowsky's gonna be a big hit for Movie-GAF. —I hope.

So I watched Blue Jasmine, and it's great, but I'm probably the wrong guy to talk about Woody Allen movies (I've thought about treating myself to Don't Drink The Water once I clear out the rest of his filmography, lol). It's not fully effortless in pulling off its roving character study—Baldwin's Hal's a wash, the script can feel inflated, one sequence Blanchett does feels forced, and I don't find Sarsgaard's character's actions believable—but holy shit is this depressing. There's an equal dosage of daily humor and inter-personal horror, and Jasmine's past circumstances ultimately have the upper hand over her life as it is. One potentially memorable take on recent events, if anything. The Dice is nice in this one too (acts the drunkard better than Blanchett, who compensates with plenty else), and all the other comedians do really well with their roles too. ****/*

I made the right decision and watched Sawdust and Tinsel as soon as I got home. There's kick-the-dog moments and then there's shoot-the-bear moments, which this film shows with conviction. The tale of Frost and Alma is one of the great, emotionally-complex vignettes I've seen over the past year or so. And the music's memorably insane, just the way I like it (it all seems pretty chipper for a Bergman). ****/*
 
Human Centipede on Amazon Prime.

Horrible movie, horrible acting, no CGI. Just 3 people taped together. Someone told me this was a popular cult movie, I think I was duped.

There's a sequel, I want to watch it, maybe it has some cool stuff?

but the wacko doctor died....... or did he?
