The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Powerful and heartbreaking. It's a real prowess to make a fascinating movie with such a repulsive and embarassing main character.

Miraculous acting all around (Joan Woodward may have overdone it a bit but she sure didn't steal her award in Cannes) especially from the two girls (and I usually really hate kids acting). That final speech had me bawling and Newman and Woodward's daughter delivery in that scene was no stranger to that.

Now why the fuck didn't Paul Newman get any recognition as a filmmaker alongside Eastwood and Cassavetes (to speak only of actors turning directors who started around the same time) ? Or did he and I've just never been told ?

I'm definitely checking out the other films he directed.

he got an oscar nom for rachel, rachel?

i've only seen that one and harry and son, which is pure garbage. I've always wanted to check out the effect of gamma rays, reading this review, i need to bump up asap.

Regarding the Ozu retrospective, I'd also suggest The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice, in addition to Kilgore's recommendations. Seeing that much Ozu in a short time might get a little exhausting but it's worth it.

Speaking of Ozu, a theater is showing a TON of Ozu over the next 2 weeks and I have never seen any of them, I don't think.. What out of this list must I see?
I am so jealous! Not only haven't you seen those movies yet, but you get to watch them on the big screen.

Don't know if you'll like it but yeah I'm pretty sure you want to see it.

Saw Witness to Murder. A 1954 film about someone who witnesses a murder through a window. It sounds very familiar to Rear Window, but thankfully it's its own thing. Stanwyck makes it worth it even if it's not as strong as that other movie. Pity it drops the ball towards the end. 7/10

Two Mules For Sister Sara. One of the few Eastwood western's I hadn't seen. It was pretty cute if unsubstantial. I really liked Shirley Maclaine in it.

Another Rowland film is The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T., which I find totally nuts and fascinating.

just rewatched Witness for Prosecution. Another stellar Wilder with some amazing plot twists . What a body of work this man has

Had a day off so I parked my ass in the theater.

Saw

Hangover 3 (ugh)

The Big Wedding (why?)

Snitch (hey I like Dwayne Johnson but why was this 112 minutes long?)

After Earth (what a total snoozefest)

What a shit day. Should have played some videogames.

Wow. Today I learned The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds was made into a movie. I remember losing to this play in high school One-Act Play competition.

Charles Laughton is so fucking cool.

Anyway, watched Andrei Rublev and, like most of Tarkovsky's work, it blew me away. Long, but goddamn is it memorable.

I've been avoiding those films like the plague. Why would you do that to yourself?

Fast Five. I fell asleep twice during this one. I guess I really don't get this serie, and don't get the Dwayne Johnson fandom. He's boooring

I've been backtracking through these, when do they get good? I fell asleep during 1, although I had fun with 6 at theaters.

Guess I'll have to see 2-5 for myself to decide.

If you liked Six, Five is the only one really like it. 2 Fast 2 Furious is garbage but Tokyo Drift is so bad it's good territory. Four is pretty unremarkable.

OK so I'm not sure if I'll be able to do the director's movies per month thing, but I did watch woman is the future of man yesterday. Here's some pretention from my letterboxd review:

It is about the repeated errors, the cycles, the paths we repeat constantly. All main characters in the movie do not seem to consider them errors though, they seem doomed to repeat them, all the while thinking that injustice is being actively being inflicted upon them through no fault of their own. The movie and the dialogue start just as a casual conversation between old friends would, and similarly ramps up when fuelled by alcohol and flashbacks. Though the intent of the director seems to punch us with informative flashbacks, I felt that the movie would have been better with a more straightforward narrative. Visually there are some interesting scenes which acted as decent parallels to the situations of the protagonists. The sparse soundtrack really lets the dialogue, which is the best part about this movie, come to the foreground, punctuating only a few key moments with its discordant melody throughout the movie. Another interesting dynamic was the societal expectations brewing amongst the dialogue of the two male leads, which lead to a lot of discreet chest thumping and peacocking of how the desires which they externalize are different when they are sober and when they are drunk. This created an interesting dissonance of wants as dictated by society and repressed idealized object of desire which they actually would prefer to strive towards if they were not constrained by the invisible cobwebs of status.

So I watched After Earth yesterday..
it wasn't as bad as I expected but don't get me wrong it's basically shit, the characters, the acting, the stupid storyline..I just stopped caring 10 minutes into the movie
I can understand the appeal behind some bad movies, but this is just disastrous, not even Transformers II fans can like this movie.

M. Night please stop making movies. just. stop.

Well since I have an unlimited movie pass I just thought I'll go check them out. Why would I do this to myself? Well ever since I got my pass I have this urge to check out every movie that comes out. I did go to the theater like 3-4 times a month even before I got my pass. Now I even check out the movies where I would have been like "nah that is probably not worth my money" before.

Doesn't seem like many people are following through on the film club thing. and this is just the first week :/

Does your theater have Mud, Frances Ha, Furious 6, The Iceman, Stories We Tell, Place Beyond the Pines, The East? Should have caught any of those instead

I'm not watching movies from some guy I never heard of, especially someone with such a NOT-AMERICA name.

Is Mama a good horror flic? the gf is wanting to watch one. To give you a sense of her taste, she damn near pissed herself during both Insideous and Sinister.

No. I was really looking forward to that movie, especially after the short in 08, but that movie was disappointing. Mama's design just had me laughing. Nothing scary or intimidating about it.

Mediocre movie at best.

V/H/S2 (or S-V/H/S?) - The biggest improvement in comparison to the first one (besides the higher overall production values) is that this horror anthology has fewer and therefore longer segments, taking away the clutter and giving each short more time to develop. Looking at the individual shorts: Both
Clinical Trials
and
Slumber Party Alien Abduction
didn't do much for me personally, but
A Ride In The Park
and
Safe Haven
were pretty damn good, with the former being a lot of fun and the latter being super creepy. Looks like the directors had fun making this, trying to be as original as they could be and relying less on easy jump-scares ***

I'm 1 movie away from having 1000 movies logged in letterboxd and I want to see something great. Which should I watch from these I've gotten: Barry Lyndon, Week-End, Close Up, Contempt, Don't Look Now, Hunger, Day for Night, My Neighbour Totoro, Pierrot le Fou, Yi Yi, Leon Morin, Priest. I haven't seen any of them.

Yi Yi is amazing, highly recommended.

Totoro is great if you're looking for something light hearted and fun.

Barry Lyndon has been in my radar for a very long time, maybe I should watch it now. I have big expectations for Yi Yi too.

I guess I'll keep putting Godard off for a while longer.

Totoro would be my pick. It's a really special movie.

Lyndon, Close-Up and Contempt would be my picks. I wasn't as taken with Don't Look Now as I thought I'd be.

Also, should I go see Late Spring at Film Forum today? Never seen.

I hope you like DLN, Charlie. It can be a tough call on first viewing, even more so if it's your first Roeg. Having an open mind towards a more experimental approach to filmmaking helps.

Also, please tell me that you're not going to watch it on the Studio Canal Blu-ray!

The other movies range from good to great, with DLN and Close-Up being my favorites. Good choices!

Speaking of Ozu...

My favorites, unranked:

I Was Born, But...
The Only Son
Late Spring
Early Summer
Tokyo Twilight (or Good Morning for some color)
