What should I watch right now? The lady comes home around 11:30 and it is 9:37 now so something shortish. Something on either Hulu or Youtube.

Inside Llewyn Davis is currently top 5 coens for me definitely, though I'm still missing Burn After Reading, Ladykillers, and Intolerable Cruelty

Have you seen Ruggles of Red Gap? I thought my expectations might have just been low after not enjoying McCarey's The Awful Truth all that much but with a couple months distance i'm confident that Ruggles is a superb film

John Carter (first viewing)

This movie really is quite an anomaly. It looks spectacular; you can see every dollar spent on-screen. So much so that I have zero idea how exactly Andrew Stanton manage to convince Disney to pour so much damn money into this. I have yet to read John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood, but plan on doing so now that I've seen the film. Overall, it's a very serviceable summer blockbuster, and certainly not deserving of being the biggest financial box-office travesty in history. Hell, Kitsch himself has been in far worse summer-flair (Battleship, X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Stanton's love for the source material is clearly there - the fact that he fought so hard to even get the film made is evidence enough of that. It's unfortunate that the budget seemed to balloon to absurd proportions and get away from him.

I hope Stanton gets a chance at doing live-action stuff again in the future, since I thought his direction in John Carter was perfectly fine for a first-timer. But I guess he's gone back into the Pixar caves to work on Finding Dory for now. If and when he does return to live action, it'll likely be something much much smaller, but I'll be interested.

godzilla! 8/10
I liked it but did have some problems, the beginning dragged a bit and the main character i kept thinking of kick ass when he opened his voice but with all the problems I still liked it. Guilty pleasure film for sure!

More than a few places calling Carell's and Tatum's performances awards worthy. Dat 22 Jump Street Oscar power.

Did they go back and reshoot the entire movie? Carrell's acting in the trailer from early last year was so bad it could've been from a funnyordie skit

I still miss a couple of Coen bros films (amongst them Raising Arizona and O Brother Where Art Thou) but I'd definitely rank Llewyn amongst their best works. Such a great film.

I've only seen 6 Coen bros movies (Fargo, NCFOM, Intolerable Cruelty, Big Lebowski, True Grit, ILD), so it's definitely in my top 5.

I command both of you to stop whatever you're doing right now and watch O Brother, Where Art Thou. Then go and buy the soundtrack, and blast I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow.

I had a really good time with Inside Llewyn Davis. Made it to my 2013 top ten.

And O Brother Where Art Thou was also good. The humor felt more direct and pathetic, but very effective.

Haven't watched Llewyn Davies, yet, but if it's better than Fargo and Miller's Crossing, then goddamn, I need to get on that. If it's between those and No Country, True Grit and A Serious Man, that'd be a fantastic movie. Better than Lebowski and Burn After Reading.. well, it'd be better than average.

But Barton Fink is so good. Lebowski is really over appreciated in my honest opinion, such a bro movie, like History of Violence or Boondock Saints.

Mulholland Drive - This is the girl

Lebowski is awesome... probably my favorite too. Taught me about white russians. Bro movie? No.

Watched Cannibal Girls, early Canadian freaky 70s horror outing by Ivan Reitman. Pretty slow but the weird characters and strange humor make it sort of watcheable.

Also watched Out of the Furnace, a movie that did almost everything right (especially with the great cast and setting) but still managed to bore me due to the tired plot and lacklustre pacing.

Its the way the sound distorts and cuts out that really sells it. The whole film has this amazing sound design, but none more apparent than there.

My appreciation for Mulholland drive only seems to grow every time I revisit it, despite having a good feel for its secrets now. A visceral dreamlike character study that celebrates and indicts Hollywood and the power of escapism. Also, not a bad Billy Wilder noir homage. Top 5 film of the last 15 years, easy

Wait, I remember someone hating on Mulholland Dr. just a few pages back (or was that in the last thread?).

Anyway, incredible movie, and that jump scare got me good. I should give that a rewatch. In the meantime..

Mud - Man, what an impeccably paced and acted film. McConaughey was absolutely brilliant in the title role. The supporting cast was fantastic as well. Great flick. Would watch again.

I haven't seen MD since... shit when was it released on DVD? I might need to revisit it.

Today, the day when Ankit gave Red Shoes a 7/10 on Letterboxd, shall forever be known as Black Wednesday.

First time I saw MD was in the dead of night in a pitch black room. Possibly one of my worst decisions.
First time I saw Blair Witch Project was in a wooden cabin in the woods in the middle of the night. Talk about bad decisions. After that we went for a nightly walk through the woods, we were scared of every rustle, every creaking noise and every gush of wind.

It did make for a memorable viewing though.

I put it in my top 3 of the last 15 years.

Also, this is the best kind of jump scares. I tend to dislike them because they're usually so cheap and overused, but when done well they can be great. The fact it's only done once in the movie makes it more special too. It reminds me of the one in Jaws (hope you know the one I mean); I know the effects aren't the most impressive, but the first I saw the movie that moment really startled me.

I hate the jump scares you can basically count down to.

I am so grateful I didn't have that moment spoiled by the time I saw the movie. Shit made me jump.

Lol, I'm pretty sure like every GAF thread on the movie spoils that moment. Anyway, I absolutely love that film, one of the best in the last 20 years of movies. And one of my favorites, super perfect ending.

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983)- 6/10

Thought it was ok. The film overstays its welcome, and the 4 characters that the movie focuses on are not all that interesting (some cool dynamics are explored though). Underwhelming climax, and some of the acting from the two Japanese leads falls into the so bad it's good category. The score is great though.

Underwhelming? That last shot though. I mean that's the whole movie for me. The soundtrack/score is also a huge part of why I love the movie though.

Even Bowie's acting is not particularly good. I think Tom Conti said he was definitely a gifted amateur but certainly not an actor. On the commentary they're talking about how Bowie studied miming in France or some shit so they let him do some miming in the movie like it's some great art that he's mastered or something, which I thought was pretty funny.

Currently watching Legend of the Drunken Master!

^ You've not experienced feels until you've heard Sakamoto play Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence live.. I almost died

Glad to see a lot of Mulholland Drive love in here! That movie is truly amazing. It's just so damn unique and well executed. I should really give it another watch sometime.
And yeah, that jump scare nearly gave me a heart attack.
