Moving out of Florida-age

California, Bay area, San Francisco is great and you get the absolute best asian/chinese food in the country

I must be going to the wrong places then, because I've yet to find a chinese take out place better than any of the ones I went to in Florida.

I went there over the summer and man he's right.

I'm currently in Orlando (2 years come Nov) and lived in NYC prior.

This thread is relevant to my interests. Only reason I'm still in FL is because Apple wants me here. :(

Would Washington DC be okay? I hear there's one job for every applicant or thereabouts.

Otherwise, I'm thinking of going west...

What exactly are you looking for in a place you plan on moving your life to? If all you want is cheap rent and a Walgreens.. just drive a few hours north or west to Georgia or WV or sumtin.

Good luck my friend.

YESS YESSS

Move to Atlanta.

I hear its really nice and when buying a house you get alot for your money.People are also nice.

Well, I asked this in the stupid questions thread, and I felt like this deserves its own thread after further discussion.

I need to move out of my parents' house. I have no option now, my mom is insisting on it. I want to move out of state, though. I'm tired of Florida.

So, I'm going to give you all five cities I want to move to. New York is out, I was told it was too expensive. So, how about these five?

Charlotte
Atlanta
Dallas
Milwaukee
Portland

I can probably get a transfer from my current job at Walgreens, I need rent to be less than $850, give or take, roommates are preferable, and I have about $1000 in my bank account.

So, what to do? Any advice? Save up?

The following are simply the most important things I'd consider about each city, it's not meant to be a "all to end all" type statement:

Portland is the best city to people who live in Portland. Visit first if you haven't been there. I'd say if Portland is on your list-- replace it with Seattle.

I've never been to Charlotte but Atlanta isn't bad. You'll have a similar climate to Florida, although, depending on where you live in FL you'll experience a completely different culture. Costs are low (which is good for something at Walgreens), there's enough to do, and you won't be too far from home should your Mother change her mind.

Dallas is a large metro area and should produce a lot of opportunity in your work life, should that be something you're looking for. It's also Texas, which means you're going to endure a bit of a culture change, I'd assume.

I can't tell you much about Milwaukee.

Cheap rent and any job that can take advantage of my clerical/cash register handling skills.

My threshold for rent is $650-700 a month. Utilities included would be a plus but not critical.

A good walking score would also be a plus. If I can use public transportation instead of a car, great.

I recently moved from south Florida to the Seattle area. I love it here so much. Nice mountain views, nicer weather, even nicer people.

atlanta is pretty cheap, especially to own. To rent tho is about 800 on average downtown and perhaps 650 greater than 20 miles out. It's nice round here tho but you gotta drive everywhere.

Seattle? Move out there and bullshit my way into a job at Valve or Microsoft?

I gotta consider that, but not having an NBA team at the moment is a downer. But they're getting a new arena, so that should be remedied soon.

Not sure of your exact plans in life, but here's my plan for leaving Florida to live in Seattle. After I graduate (this spring), I plan to fill out an application for the Seattle Police Department, and stay with my aunt for the summer, so I can complete those exams. If everything goes well, I'll get accepted into the police force, and I'll officially get myself a studio.

Police life might not be a bad life for you. Steady job, if you're semi-smart, you can pass those exams, and the pay is fairly good.

I'm thinking about either Dallas or Atlanta. I should be ready to move out by the end of the year, provided that I can find a job soon.

Thread bump, if that's okay.

I'm deciding on Atlanta. Rentals are reasonable, decent MLB team, lots of companies have their HQ there (Coca-Cola, UPS and Porsche Cars North America, to name three), no state income tax, and the city's too busy to hate.

Also, Rick Scott isn't the governor there.

You sound fickle, poor, and unmotivated; it's good you're leaving. Florida is for winners.

If you want to move to a big city with a lot of big company HQs and a mlb team that has actually won something in the last 15 years move to miami.

If you don't value your life, then sure, become a cop.

Florida is for weirdos and old snowbirds, and the Marlins are a laughingstock now. I need a change of scenery. Badly.

Portland is great. My sister lived there for almost 2 years, but ultimately decided to move back to NYC. Lots of cool neighborhoods and restaurants. The major downside is the weather is a bit crappy for 2/3 of the year.

I prefer rain to snow and heat waves.

I don't think I can afford the taxes and high gas prices. I'll stick in the South.

I found that wages were so much higher out here that it made up for it. But that was before the economy tanked. I have friends who love Atlanta so you're probably going to do fine. But, man, aim for a place where you don't sweat your balls off 3/4 of the year. You will enjoy life better.

I'm used to the hot weather.

Oh man, Florida stinks! I should move somewhere. Hmmm, how about Georgia!

No man. No. Might as well move to Mississippi.

Nah, I am just kidding. Mississippi is the worst.

Fist bump?

And I need something full time, what to do?

my Gf found a few Good paying jobs on craigs list for call centers for sprint and a few others

Im trying to get my career in Tv/movie production rolling in the right direction and ATL is great for that..... From what ive heard and seen posted

If it's okay for a thread bump, I have an update...

I settled on Atlanta for a while, but I had another argument with my parents. I have one month to pack my stuff up and leave.

I'm thinking about asking to start management training at my current job then ask for a transfer, but I'm a little afraid to ask. But one of my managers is retiring soon, so it's now or never. Maybe if things work out, I can train where I am now, then transfer when I feel like I have the hang of this.

Then again, I did stumble upon a nice apartment in Atlanta.

I need a game plan, and fast.

Northern Florida is a pretty good place to live. Particularly Jacksonville or St augustine.

But I want out of the state, hence the desire to go to Atlanta.

I need a change of scenery, and frankly, living in the state that Honey Boo Boo Child calls home is much less embarrassing than having a Bat Boy lookalike who perpetrated the largest fraud case in the history of Medicare as my governor. (I may have said that before).

Bumping this thread one more time, if that's okay.

Upon further reflection, Atlanta's out. The Georgia GOP is trying to get Allen West to make a congressional comeback in his home state. Having him as my congressman for two years was more than enough, I celebrated Patrick Murphy's victory, I don't want to risk having to call West my congressman again.

So, there's two finalists now. The first is the Washington DC area. I went there last month, and I fell in love with the town. Lots of cultural greatness, the Smithsonian, a MLB team that isn't embarrassing to root for, potential for jobs, and the murder rate is going down (on pace for less than 100 this year, a level not seen in 50 years). I could be a great political wonk, come to think of it. I could see myself being a desk jockey at the Pentagon, the Library of Congress (what a awesome place), maybe even be on the staff of my hometown congresspeople.

The other finalist is Redwood Shores, CA. If I go down this route, it's because I said "fuck it, I'm going to chase my dreams" and try to talk my way into a job at Electronic Arts so I can make that sequel to Beetle Adventure Racing I have figured out in my head, amongst other things. The only problem here is that rentals are expensive as hell. Does anyone have a good place to look for apartments online other than Walk Score or Apartment Finder?

DC-GAF, Bay Area-GAF, I want to talk. I want to put together an attack plan so that one or the other comes to fruition. Help me out.

All of these (especially the LoC) are highly competitive positions. I think you'll find it's difficult to crack into the DC gov't agency/think-tank market without a grad degree and/or extensive connections. This applies to entry-level positions as well. It's a cool (and rather expensive) place to be, but don't be the fool I was: make sure you've got a job lined up before you move here. Otherwise, you'll blow through your life savings in a matter of months--cost of apartment rentals in DC is probably higher than even Redwood Shores.

What about living out of Arlington, VA? Would that be better? Should I see if my local congresspeople are in need of filling position?

Getting the job lined up first, regardless of where I go, is going to be the biggest obstacle for me. I have no illusions otherwise. What would be the best strategy to tackle this? I would think that being out of state, much less the same time zone, would be a significant hurdle to overcome.

Arlington is almost as expensive as DC. Unless you move to some of the crappier places in Prince George's County, MD, you're looking at $1,000 per month minimum for studio prices in the DC metro area. You've got to roommate up if you want to save money.

The only disadvantage being out-of-state presents is that you'll have to pony up for transportation costs if you land an interview. Getting an interview in the first place is nearly the hardest part. Just to give you an idea: I graduated from a decent university with a 3.8 GPA and had full-time experience working abroad (I taught English in Korea). I submitted 200+ applications over the span of 7 months before I even got a temp job.

It's a strong market, but it's also, as I mentioned, a highly competitive market; everyone and his mother has a bachelor's degree in the area, and so that's not really a useful sorting mechanism for hiring managers. It would be a good idea to see if you can nab a job under your local congresspeople because then you may have connections you can ply, and also because it's a good idea to apply to every job you can conceivably see yourself doing and a few that you can't.

EDIT: You don't seem to be too picky about what you apply to, so that's a bonus. FYI, though, I think there's only one Walgreen's in the city--plenty of CVS stores though!

twinturbo -

not moving someplace because of who the congressman/governor/etc might be is fucking ridiculous. Come on, dude. Politics are only a part of who we are. Don't let it dictate your entire fucking life, or else you will be miserable.

If you are going to move, I think you should reconsider Atlanta. I live here, and compared to other urban areas in the US its pretty cheap. However, you'd definitely be looking at the burbs given your income and savings. Rent in-town is a lot higher (so long as you aren't living in an awful area) and gas/going out/etc is a lot higher.

Also - there is no way you are going to be able to land a staffer job. Those positions are for the best and brightest types with degrees and connections. Based upon your current employment, I'm guessing you've got neither. Need to give up that dream now unless you plan on several years of schooling.

If it helps, I'll be in the Atlanta area to attend yet another Dave Matthews Band concert so I can get a feel of the area.

I'm still waffling a bit, but it's still in my top three now.

Fuck it. I'm going to chase my dreams. I'm leaning towards Redwood City, CA. I found a nice housing complex on El Camino Real that's 1.7 miles away from a Walgreens location, and about 4.5 miles from EA World HQ. So, here's my crazy plan.

1. Ask for a relocation to that Redwood City Walgreens location so I can at least have a job when I get there.

2. Start the application process for that apartment complex, get in touch with the landlords, line up a roommate to split expenses with. See how long it's going to take and prepare for the move.

3. When the relocation and application process are done, pack my shit and do an epic road trip with the parents, coast to coast.

4. Get acclimated with the surroundings. See if it's possible to ditch the car for a bike, or hope the roommate has a car. Save up. Pay bills. Integrate. Get a second job if the money situation demands it. Write that novel I have an idea for in my spare time.

5. Get in touch with some people in the know about the Northern California tech scene. Formulate a plan. Build a list of references to go with the ones I have.

6. Something happens.

7. I land a low-level job at EA. Tester, getting coffee for Peter Moore, whatever. Be the best employee I can be, get promoted, move up the ranks. Finish the novel if it's not done and get it published.

8. Something else happens.

9. I get sequels to Mirror's Edge, Beetle Adventure Racing and Road Rash greenlit. Pitch a game adaptation of the novel and get it greenlit.

10. Go wherever God takes me.

I can do this. I just need to stick to my plan and not give up. I'm going to see about a transfer and get this started.

3. When the relocation and application process are done, pack my shit and do an epic road trip with the parents, coast to coast.

you lost me there, when I was younger 20 minutes in the car with my farther useally had me fantasying about hitting him with a pick axe. But hey best of luck
