Moving to Pittsburgh in August, Any Stuff I Should Know?

Uncle Sam's is way better than Primanti's, but it's okay, because Uncle Sam's has some of the absolute best sandwiches anywhere. Primanti's is decent enough, especially suburban locations with the expanded menus, but it's definitely overrated.

P.S. - My wife's uncle owned Primanti's, prior to the company's sale last year.

Help me find a place to live, Pittsburgh GAF ;_;

Remember that the places where you are looking to live (Oakland, Shadyside, Squirrel Hill) have a very specific rent cycle.

Right now, the best rent deals are for summer sublets, as we have many students who are still looking to sublet their apartments over the upcoming summer months since they will not be taking classes this summer.

From my experience years ago as a student in Pittsburgh looking for an apartment for the following academic year, the absolute best time to get an apartment for the following school year is February, March and April, as landlords want to lock down students for next year before a large portion of the students leave for summer break. Obviously - you were not able to take advantage of this.

But - from now through August, you will start to see more and more individual apartment deals popping up, as people's plans for the next school year change (i.e. of the large number of people who have signed leases for next year, people will drop out of school, people will take jobs and not go to school, etc.). In my case, I ended up finding a very affordable but solid quality apartment as a Pitt grad student in the August before I started school (we started around August 28th).

So - don't stress too much about not being able to find a place right now - especially since you are not coming until August. Just be diligent and check Craig's List every day (as well as CMU's housing office listings - assuming that they have listings on a website).

Here is Pitt's off campus housing office (which has an apartment listing section). This is worth checking frequently as well:

Also - I'm not sure why you are focusing so heavily on Squirrel Hill. Don't get me wrong - it is a nice place to live, but Shadyside is a great place to live and is very close to Squirrel Hill.

Thanks for the info! The guy I was going to live with decided at the last minute that he wants to live with his boyfriend instead, so now I'm left scouring for a place. I didn't mean to make it seem like I need to stay in Squirrel Hill; Anywhere 2 miles and under to CMU is agreeable with me!

Sounds good - Morningside should also be on your radar screen. You can take the bus to CMU and Morningside is filled with mostly older houses that people rent out. Shadyside is great though. It is filled with young professionals and there are lots of apartments. Regent Square is also fairly close by, and it has a mix of old houses and new apartments .

Bloomfield is a good place to look as well. At least it was 10 years ago lol. Not sure if it has changed since then.

Ya Bloomfield is definitely on the rise. Children's Hospital moved there about 5 years ago, which has led to a lot of real estate development.

UPDATE: Ended up signing a lease for this place in Friendship at 371 Negley Ave: http://www.jjlandapartments.com/friendship?lightbox=dataItem-j2976d6c

Sleeping in a basement will be a little weird, and apparently people online seem to have some not great things to say about the management company, but the apartment was clean and I didn't see any sign of mold when I moved in. Area seems, for the most part, fairly safe. Ended up being able to bump up my budget.
