Moving to the Georgia, Any Advice?

Meh, I don't see Paul Johnson as the issue, offense has pretty much been fine, defense has been terrible. But to be honest the issues go way deeper, Tech needs to decide if they want to be a football school or not. The environment has changed too much, limited degree options, less exceptions for football players, etc. We simply aren't going to be able to compete consistently. But I digress, football season is coming up and I am actually excited for it.

I would keep your expectations in check. Paul Only won anything with Chan Gailey's players; you can't recruit players when you run a high school offense. Basketball should be much improved this year.

I recall reading that tech is starting to offer some bs sounding minor degrees like 'sports history', so it does seem like stuff is going down that path.

And yeah, downtown at night ain't safe.

Get too many emails from tech about a student getting robbed by a 'black man in jeans and a hoodie in a SUV'.

GT's defense will always be horrible, because they have to practice against a triple option offense. So, either they don't know the basic setups that "regular" offenses will use, or have to practice against an ill-equipped Triple Option Offense that attempts to do "regular" offensive plays.

Plus, it's to the point that they can't entice the big time high school players. So, stuck with undersized defensive players, and undersized (on purpose) offensive lineman.

Now, if they can get Calvin Johnson Jr/2.0, maybe they'll have a chance to do something.

Bah, they don't practice against the triple option, they practice against what the other team is doing with a scout team like every other team does.

I agree on the O-Line though, I have always thought his philosophy of tiny O-Linemen was not going to work in a major conference.

I think it's more crappy defensive recruiting and crappy D Coordinators. Paul is hands off, way too hands off if you ask me regarding defense. It's his own fault on the choices of DCs and recruiting, I agree with that.

But what type of players are running GT's scout offense? Players recruited to the Triple Option!

It certainly doesn't help for the scout team but I think this thought of triple option hurting our own defense is way overblown, it has a minimal impact, the lack of good D-Lineman is the number 1 issue. The 3-4 Al Groh went to was an awful idea, ugh. Like Tech is going to get a giant nose tackle like Alabama or something, c'mon, don't get me started on the 3-4.

Anyway, this thread is getting a bit derailed. Good luck OP!

Take a drive on GA 221 or any other rural state road and you'll see the real GA outside of Atlanta and other urban centers.

Screw Holeman and Finch.

Tiny, cramped, fueled by hype. I went there with my wife on Valentine's Day (a mistake, I know), but the host was a bit of an asshole. We ended up leaving after standing in the cramped bar/entrance area for about 45 minutes.

There is nothing hyped about its burger that it doesn't match or exceed. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the host. We've never had an issue.

As someone who grew up in Georgia I can honestly say that most of Georgia sucks save for a few gems such as ATL, Athens, and Savannah.

I think someone's upbringing is marked by things other than happening or beautiful locations.

It's just home for me.

Our defense is horrible because we don't get massive d linemen. Lets be honest here, when it comes to intelligence defensive lineman are definitely bringing up the rear. If a team wants to beat us all they have to do is run the ball right up the middle. We can't stop it. Last year when VT decided they actually wanted to win the game they just kept running the ball with that huge QB and he was picking up chunks of yards each time. A pass is pretty much a wasted down against us because our secondary is usually pretty decent at coverage. I don't know why it takes opponents so long to figure out they need to just do simple runs against us.

Spent a lot of time at the beach last summer and it looked just like that when it wasn't crowded (might be a tad bit of color correction in the beach image, but the point stands)

You've just got to find a nice spot.

And yeah, the image above the beach isn't Tybee. It's somewhere around midtown. Been through there plenty of times.

Here's Tybee again on a cloudy day.

(and I've lived in Savannah for the past 7 years, btw :) )

Fair enough ...I usually steer clear of it anyhow! Prefer HHI or Jekyl. I'm actually in RH, but good to know there's other Savannah gaffers !!

Apologies for the bump, getting ready for the move on Thursday. I had a question again:

I know commuting to Atlanta is a pain, but how about commuting from one small town to another? Say, Palmetto to Union City, or Palmetto to Peachtree City? What's the best time to drive?

I'm asking because I'm on the job hunt again. :c

Unless you live in Watkinsville, yeah.

Yeah, absolutely.

Tons, and I mean literally, tons of places within walking distance of the UGA campus for like 250-400 bucks a month rent. And thats solo/one other person. You get into a house sharing or 4 bed apartment, it gets even better.

Shit, now I'm getting all nostalgic/homesick for Athens and Georgia. (Moved to Seattle beginning of this year. )

Moved from Georgia to Seattle last year and I don't miss Ga one bit. Ga summers were brutal.

This is hilarious that we posted this at the same time.

I will give you that though, fuck the summers. Summers in Seattle are unbelievably pleasant.

Athens kicks ass. I lived there while going to UGA for 6 years. I really really miss living there. Rent in Athens is dirt fucking cheap. I lived at nice apartment complexes my entire time there, and the most rent I ever paid was 315 a month (with roommates, though. Nice 3 br in a "luxury" complex ran about 1000/mo).

We really should have a Georgia or atlGAF OT. Make it happen, someone!

I live in Columbus, OH now and like it okay, but it's not Athens. I'd move back in a heartbeat if I could do my job there.

When were you at UGA, andy, and where did you stay? I spent most of my college life on the Riverbend Parkway apartment complexes (aspen, university commons, polo club) and spent the last two years at Springlake

Until 2001, and the only thing that sucked was I lived off campus at my parents and had to work about 30 hours a week. I'm really familiar with those places though.

Palmetto to any other city on the south side will be an easy commute, it's just that the expressway doesn't go to Peachtree City, Fayetteville, Stockbridge, etc...so you will have to take the longer, surface street routes. Also Palmetto isn't really near an expressway so you will have to drive 10 minutes to Fairburn or Union City to reach I-85.

Are you white? I'm asking because if so you don't want to work in Fairburn or Union City. You want to go south east to Peachtree City, Newnan, or Fayettevile.

-black guy who lived in Fairburn for 25 years.

I'm Black. And judging by that comment, I'm going to avoid working in Union City...sigh.

hah! that's the same year i graduated too. You too suffered greatly under the reign of Donnan. :(

Worked for WNGC/WGAU for nearly 5 years while I was there. If you ever walked by anything that had our banner at UGA events, you probably walked right past me as I was nearly always manning those events. Did a lot of work on the Bulldog Radio Network as well.

Was just in Newnan/Peachtree City this weekend, it's the last time I'll visit, because my relatives are moving out of that area. Will miss eating at J.Christopher's. Great Breakfast place. Just seems like a nice area, lots of growth and expansion.

I have an interview in alpharetta tomorrow and the one thing I've noticed immediately is nobody pays any mind to the speed limit. 55? Nope, we're going to go 70. I also see a lot more "Minimum speed limit 40" signs than actual speed limits.

I moved to Georgia a couple years ago after growing up in Jacksonville and it's one of the most barren lamesickle places one could imagine.

This guy probably got banned for such a statement. No way Jville residents can call anything lame. BTW, are you Black? Just saying...if you happen to be, just realize, no matter how much Atlanta tries to fool you, you are still in the south. I've said that so many times over the past year.

If you like a small town feel close to the city, try City of Decatur. Nice 'downtown' area yet a lot of hippies. Close to Marta.

Edit: BTW, Chris Rock lied.

Is this a religious thing?

Not sure, but I know that the only two states banning Sunday alcohol sales are Connecticut and Indiana. Georgia state laws now permit sales on Sunday, but it's up to local cities to approve it. I know Atlanta and Athens are okay with it now.

55 is a suggestion.. When I take 85 through town I'm normally going about 75 or 80. And there's usually some people passing me too.

I had Mary Mac's today for lunch. All you thinking-of or new Atlantans should give this place a visit when you get here.

Only after 12:30 PM though (for most Atlanta counties).
Gotta get some God in you before you put the devil in.

Only assholes and elderly go 55. But really 55 maybe in the right lane if traffic is smooth, otherwise people are going to be pissed. There's a video of some guys forming and line across 75 N or S and going 55 for a while. It's pretty crazy.
