[MS-Conf] Tomb Raider Gameplay Demo

The Tomb Raider fire moments remind me how Far Cry 3 failed with the new fire script on that short gameplay video.

I'm very glad to see how the game is really looking with the new Lara Croft hurting and screaming voice. Love it.

People keep saying this isn't like uncharted and I keep seeing the devs talk about open gameplay, but every time they show this it looks as boring and linear and setpiece driven as uncharted. But this throws QTEs in too.

What I liked:
-Gunplay/Combat is much better than previous games. Being able to get into cover and/or hide makes sense to me, and no auto-aim is a huge plus.
-Visuals are nice. Showing how the great game looks during the day was a good move.

Not for me:
-The combat level being one giant corridor. The QTE intro from last year was also one giant corridor.
-The amount of shooting is rather high. With a bow, I expected enemies to be fewer and more of a threat. Rather than bumbling idiots that die while trying to reload after emptying a clip.

To stand out from the rest of games at the conference, they should've shown something similar to that leaked press demo from last year. The story cutscene followed by a bunch of platforming in a relatively large area.

I was embarrassed watching the trailer in my office, there's no way I could play that at home without using my headphones. Seriously, the intensity and excessive amount of pained moaning was a bit much -- wives everywhere will love this game.

The Katniss/Hunger Games pandering is pretty terrible too. Game itself looks decent enough though and I expect it will be very good.

I like the direction they're taking but holy shit what is with all of the brown, green shit smear graphics in those photos?

If they want to copy Uncharted 2, which I hope they do really, then at least get the vibrant graphics of it.

So obviously those elements are there and they just haven't shown them yet.

Is this getting a PC version btw?

I could not suspend by disbelief for the whole water splashing in third-person and the whole going down the river stream bit. I mean seriously. It's just terrible

Wat @: Sliding down the river and pulling the shotgun out, shooting a barricade, and putting it back so you can resume flailing your arms. Hahaha.

We were trying to determine at what point in the trailer she would have lost enough blood to make continuing on impossible.

Tomb Raider has always had action. I don't really see the problem with them showing a demonstration of how the action is going to play out. It actually looks good now! In the previous games, the action mechanics were so shitty you had to basically ignore them and concentrate on the solid platforming.

Everybody calling this an Uncharted clone needs to chill. CD is doing another demo that's going to show how the game plays out. That's probably where they'll show the slower parts of the game.

It's a massive departure from traditional Tomb Raider, but they didn't really have much choice. The production values on display here are excellent. Really liking the way this looks.

Said it last year, but traditional Tomb Raider never appealed to me. This does. It's a move to expand the audience, not cater to the (I would imagine at this point - a very small group of) hardcore Tomb Raider fans.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Will probably get on Steam sale though.

It's all a lie! Let's be ultra cynical/negative together!

It is a lie until I see it. If they keep showing a game that looks like Uncharted then I will say it looks like Uncharted. I have no fucking reason to take their word for it, talk is cheap. Show me the damn game you want to make.

I know it's a battle for survival, but Lara sticking a knife through the guy's throat really rubbed me the wrong way.

Graphically, the game looks great, but I've kind of lost interest in it all the same.

They claim that there are hubs, or open/non linear areas that you can explore -- but the gameplay shown so far seems to indicate that it's quite linear/not open or explorable.

Most games tend to indicate how well they support 'open areas' through certain restrictions and design decisions early on -- ie, if the toolset/pipeline for the engine allows you to use a lot of the level, the various things that logically should be usable, or accessible, and fits with the theme and design of a level, you'd eventually notice if these things are closed off, or limited, after a few levels, or at once, depending on the scenario.

IE; If there's a level that is very limited in scope and 'openness', but has no reason to be -- it should actually be very open in the context of the theme, plot, flow of the design so far, so it seems very odd that it is very linear/closed off. (Not referring to Tomb Raider here.)

Of course, most engines could create an open world in a game, but some engines do not handle it as well. The water-level (Where you swim around in an area with lots of boats.) in Uncharted 3 is quite open and handles it well.

But the gameplay and overall 'feel' of this game seems to be quite linear. But even though I absolutely love open world games, and somewhat dislike Uncharted 3 (I haven't finished the first 2 yet.), this looks pretty good.

Even if the game DOES have open world elements already what i've seen was shitty, full of human enemies, buttload of weapons and ammos, cover mechanics.. in what way is this a TOMB RAIDER game? Bah, we've been over this already, anyway, what goddamn kick in the balls.

Yeah, running around the wilderness and mountains while shooting dudes is nothing like Tomb Raider.

Oh wait.
The defining aspect of TR has always been large, open environments with lots of puzzles and platforming.

As a long time fan of the series I continue to be disappointed with what's being shown. I like Uncharted just fine but I don't need other series' that I enjoy trying to be just like it.

Like I said before, I am fine with this sort of stuff in this game, but they need to show off the more open spots with the platforming and exploration. I am dying to see those aspects.

So when are they going to show the Arkham Asylum, Metroidvania type gameplay or was that BS?

The bow looks fun and Lara Croft:Uncharted 1.5 still could be great, just work on janky camera.

Oh wait.

If running and shooting dudes is what Tomb Raider is all about to you then...well you need to play Tomb Raider games again I guess.

I can't help but feel really awkward at the Tomb Raider trailer during the Microsoft conference. It felt like I was watching a "Lara Croft gets her ass kicked by bad luck" simulator. I mean, the trailer last year I recall her getting pierced through the abdomen with I think a bone. So this year she falls directly only some scrap metal in the busted plane, right through her abdomen again. And this is not counting the number of cut-scenes where she's getting bashed around and slammed into things.

That just doesn't sit too well with me.

As said earlier, she probably should've passed out from blood loss. I mean, sheesh, I know it's a game, but the decision for visible damage just makes me wince. (It really didn't help that all of the other action games shown were guys tanking bullets and other blows like they were nothing.)

If I was a fan of the original Tomb Raider series I'd probably be upset that they seem to be focusing less on the puzzle aspect and going a more action-oriented route.

Good thing I wasn't a fan of the original Tomb Raider.

They were obviously inspired by Karl Pilkington.

lara looks incredibly cute, but i find it funny how they put her through so much damn abuse. 3/4 of the trailer was her falling down, crashing into shit and just bleeding all over the damn place

LOOK GUYS SHES A STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER LOOK AT ALL THE ABUSE AND BROKEN BONES SHE CAN HANDLE

The game looks nice and the combat is much improved. Hoping the demos on GT and IGN show some open world stuff, but I'm doubting it.

Ryona fetish fans are gonna have a ball with this game.

In the conference they also mentioned that the game would be released first on Xbox 360, but still targeted for March 5, 2013. So, March 5 for Xbox 360..and ..TBA 2013 for PS3/PC?

EDIT: Watched again..DLC first, not game. :p
