MS' Eye Toy

Xbox Video Chat will let up to five users communicate with each other on a TV screen simultaneously. The Xbox Video Chat kit, which will retail for 6,800 yen ($62), comes with a small video camera, the Xbox voice communicator, the Xbox Video Chat Disc, and an Xbox Live starter kit with 12 free months of Xbox Live.

The Xbox Video Chat comes with a number of features to spice up its communication functions, including sound effects, visual effects, voice alteration, and the ability to vibrate the other participants' controllers remotely. The Xbox Video Chat also comes with 40 preinstalled background music tracks and a function to turn the TV screen into a mirror temporarily, so players can groom themselves before joining a conversation.

Did I miss the E3 publicity for this, or was it just not ready for prime time?

Looks pretty solid, but the whole vibrating controller thing sounds like a pretty odd function.

this whole thing was built in japan, they are crazy over there

And still no k/b mouse for FPS...
who cares. their are like 4 PS2 games that actually support keyboard and mouse. What is the big deal with kb/m combo, give it up.

So, they're giving 12 months of Xbox live, the communicator, the camera, & the software for $62. Talk about giving away the cow for free.

Why are they rolling this out in Japan before the US? Don't they want to make money on this? I mean, is the miniscule Xbox audience in Japan so loyal that they can afford to iron out the bugs there? This certainly isn't going to make up for the TFLO cancellation with the beta players. I'm totally confused.

First tragedy, then farce.
at the press conference they showed this off and said this kind of stuff could start popping up in games in the future... personally, I wouldnt want that. I allready have to listen to morons, all I need is some punk mooning me, or worse. Plus, if someone walks in the room, I would like the mute button (or another) to kill the picture.

Cool, you think they'll do the free year of Live for the states as well? And when's it coming over?

No. It requires Xbox Live and the service is almost nonexistant in Japan right no. versus the US where it is very healthy. It's a concession for that region.

They'll probably just toss in 2 free months of Live, like they've been doing with each XBL release. No reason to give away a year, especially when XBL is doing well here in the States.

It may hit this fall, it may hit this spring. Allard wasn't very specific at the conference, other than "it's coming!"

No, he and Moore said it's coming next year and this fall in Japan. I really don't understand why it's not the other way around.

It's developed by MS Japan, so I think that's why it's debuting there first.

I wonder if there are any plans for games that use the camera for motion sensing.

LOL, wtf? I wonder can you record video with the camera. I can see the X-Box turning into the home porn-maker kit in record time.

I know they said it's coming this fall in Japan, but are you sure they said next year for US? I'm glancing through my notes, it's possible I didn't catch it though.

Sega should release the Rez vibrator for Xbox now. Don't actually release Rez, just the vibrator. I see lots of interesting peripherals in the Xbox's future. :D

Even if it's developed in Japan, I don't know why they're aren't trying to get it out in the US this year.

I'm sure there are games coming with the success Sony's had and we'll probably see them at TGS. If not, then MS needs to find better leadership.

Bring on the games... The chat interface looks utterly boring.

If it's nicely integrated into Xbox Live this could be cool. It would be nice if the cameraless people could still chat with camera fellows, i.e. just make this a regular feature of the Xbox Live chat. And then extend that to game lobbies... then to games... mmm. Scary possibilities.

I can't believe no one has made the obvious joke about all Japanese Xbox Live subscribers being able to video chat at once...

Now, let me confess that this is not the first time that I've used a game component to, er, stimulate myself physically. Ever since they invented the whole rumble pack/vibrating technology in controllers, it's been on my mind, and sometimes in my practice (fellow game girls, you know what I'm talking about). The thing is, though, it's often frustrating since the vibrations are not nice and steady, but sporadic. Also I found it's tough to actually play the game and use the controller in nasty ways at the same time. I did discover that Halo was a pretty good game for this (although for not much else), because as the gunner in the Warthog, you have unlimited ammo and you can just park yourself somewhere and rat-tat-tat to your heart's content. Another issue, and one not solved by the Xbox controller, is the shape of the device - less than ideal. That's why I was so excited by Rez's trance vibrator, since it seems to have no other purpose than to act as a masturbatory aid. Its shape is pretty nice, it can slip easily under your skirt or in your panties, it comes with a protective "glove" which you can wash, and it emits a regular pulsating rhythm that gets ever more intense and thrilling the deeper you go into the game. Damn, by the end I was writhing on the floor! Synesthesia indeed.

Am I wrong? Has anyone else found a better use for it?

Microsoft wasn't kidding about expanding their audience.

I was there, and I just watched it again. When do they say it'll be out next year?
They didn't, they said they were rolling it out later. If not next year, it's not coming at all.

Example A has you saying they said it will be out next year. Example B has you saying they didn't specifically mention when it's coming out, and then your speculation. Hmm.

Furthermore, Example C (above) highlights a sleep-deprived journalist obessissing over an inane detail.

Ok, so it isn't coming to the US ever.

Or, my speculation sucks?

Or, there is no logical speculation allowed in here?

Or, I am stupid for assuming MS is going to take a year to release features they showed this year like last year with XBL 3.0 voice mail?

Or, MS is foolish for showing a feature they didn't gaurantee will come to the US?

J Allard indicated that this will be out on XBL next year without saying so in those exact words.

I'm just saying, if you're going to speculate - make sure you somehow convey that it's speculation instead of labelling it as fact.
