MS: new 360 controller with fixed dpad; $64.99 (incl. play & charge); grey buttons

Not to bag the thread or anything, but damn. How many times have we seen the rumor that Micro is coming out with a new controller and the aim is to fix their shitty D-pad?

This.

They already made an improved dpad controller, they just DIDN'T BOTHER ALLOWING MANY PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY GET IT.

Thats the friggin' ridiculous thing. :lol The work was already done, they just went "Meh" to releasing the thing properly.

It came out with some soccer game a few years ago, in some parts of Europe and South America (maybe? Can't remember). Its a very lime green colour.

I luckily got one from eBay years ago for my FFXI addiction (dpad heavy, big time) and I've used the shit out of it.

So will this new controller eventually be phased in with the system or (as rhetorical as it sounds) sold separately?

perfect strategy for Microsoft. They could have included this updated controller with the 360 S, but why do that when you can release it a bit later for people who are willing to pay for it.

Why in the world would you build a controller with the original shitty d-pad that transforms into a controller with a less shitty d-pad?

Why not just build a controller with a less shitty d-pad?

smh Microsoft. Can't do nothing right.
So you can shout out "XBOX 360 CONTROLLER, TRRRRAAAANNNNSSSSFOORRRRMMM! *Cue 15 seconds of light effects*"

hmm this won't be very effective unless they change the contacts on the inside of the controller, right?

i've got a couple pads that i added cutout pieces of pringles lids to in order to raise the dpad and make them feel snappier and while they're better it still isn't ideal.

Yeah I remember these being released. I can't believe Microsoft didn't release those here. How much better were they?

If this is true, is anyone really gonna go out and purchase a new controller when they really don't need to get another controller?

They got people to pay $60 a year for online, $120 for a 20 GB HDD, $20 for a plastic faceplate and $100 for a wifi adaptor. So I'm gonna go with yes.

I bought all those things. :/

This is so true and reading it gave me a good laugh :lol

The dpad is a lot better, its actually responsive now. You don't feel like you're fighting a losing battle trying to press it and when I do a fireball motion he'd actually DO a fireball instead of jumping forward in the mash mess of an old dpad heh.

Other than that it feels the same as a regular controller, most people hate the colour but I guess I don't mind it as my fav colour is green. :D It is veeery green though. :lol

I've been playing FFXI on 360 for many years now and I would have never been able to stand it with the regular crap pad. Basically that controller and the ability to play games of the HDD in silence (no more lawn mower jet engine noise from the system) made me love my 360 after not really connecting with it previously. <3

About damn time. I thought GAF was exaggerating. Then I bought Street Fighter 4 for the 360. Thirty minutes of playing as Ryu in arcade mode later and I had a motherfucking thumb-BLISTER. Not even kidding. It really hurt.

This isn't a rumor, it's true. I'm at the Gamestop Manger Conference and Microsoft announced it and is giving us a free one. I should be able to get my hands on one at the expo tomorrow and I'll let you know what it's like.

Use the analog stick it is better than any d-pad. Don't push all the way each time you throw a fireball it should be a quiver of the stick.

But 4 face buttons blow so you should get a stick.

So its 4 years too late with redesigned hardware and 5 years late for the redesigned d-pad. Someone at MS quality control is slow at typing memos.

A few questions come to mind:
1) What the fuck took so long?
2*) Why the fuck didn't one come with my recent 360 S purchase?
2a*) If one did come with my recent 360 S purchase, why does it still suck so much?

* Regardless of the answers for questions 2) and 2a), question 1 still emphatically stands.

Yeah, this is probably the most annoying part about this news. Why didn't the new pad be in the S unit (and the Halo Reach one).

Personally, I find the new pad that came with the S unit to be the worst. Strangely my best 360 pad is that ugly red / carbon Gamestop one.

I don't play fighters so the D-Pad issue has never been that annoying to me but I have noticed that in some games where the D-Pad is used for item switching it sometimes chooses the wrong item.

And actually I've been looking to buy a wired 360 controller that I could use for PC as well. This might be it, or the Razer Onza.

is photography allowed?

i'm hoping to see some pictures of this wacky pad soon!

It would be funny if Microsoft just swapped out the standard 360 D-pad for an S-type. I'd actually be pretty fine with that. Best case scenario would be something that looks more like the Saturn's god-like D-pad.

No, that was the limited edition lime green pad that had a 16 way d pad instead of 8. It wasn't that much better, and I think only a single game ever made use of the extra directions.

People still belive that bullshit rumor? :lol

Yes, that's my controller, there's no 16 directions.

If this is true, there had better be a wired version. I need a good classic style controller for my SMC fix, and flash games in general.

Hopefully they keep from changing the rest of the controller, though. It's easily the most comfortable one I've used outside the GC controller.

I've seen many things (especially on GAF) but people demanding a wired controller is new.

yeah its called Kinect, lol
:lol

At this point I don't really care anymore. I don't really use the Dpad for much, and even when I play Street Fighter I use Zangief so I just rock the Dpad around in circles anyway.

Isn't this a fairly odd solution for a really old problem? What is Microsoft thinking these days?

If someone was going to buy a new controller with a fixed d-pad, wouldn't they just buy a fightpad or something?
Already did that, although I wouldn't kick this thing out of bed.

I think I have 3 wireless controllers and 1 wired, and I always use the wired one. Wireless is comfortable, but when you don't play that often, it's better to have your main pad available without bothering with charging batteries.

Anyway since we're talking about d-pads and fighting games, I still don't understand why nobody (first or third party) copied the NGPC mini-stick. It was perfect both as a standard d-pad and as a stick. Even if I already own an arcade stick, I would buy such a pad at once, since several fighting games are made with a pad in mind (most of the western ones, and even DOA4 had group making functions in the lobbies that required an analog stick).

All they really had to do to fix it for the most part is make the ring around the dpad bigger so it doesn't touch when pressed down but making a taller dpad sounds good, but going by the feeling of the current design it's not going to help much imo, not persice enough.
