MS : 'Nobody bought' Xbox 360 faceplates

I always wanted the E3 05 faceplay. It was simple and just had a few green rings. Very nice.

Well this is weird! On the day that a thread about 360 faceplates occurs, I receive my first 2 faceplates ever. I won a contest on twitter from 2K games, and they sent my faceplates for both Mafia 2 and The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom(?). No idea what that second game is, so I will have to do a little research on it :lol

I will post pics in a bit

Got a free Viva Pinata faceplate at one point.

Picked up a $4.99 "Make your own faceplate" third party accessory which I used to make a half-dozen faceplates. They looked pretty awesome.

Now I'm rocking plain white on my main 360 and Viva Pinata on the secondary one.
Ahh I remember that, I had one of those way back. The outer plastic shell wasn't that attractive though. Man I forgot all about those days, I don't even know what happened to mine, might've threw it away. :lol

I don't think the notion of getting a faceplate has ever crossed my mind in all the years I have owned a 360. Most of them pretty ugly looking, but there a few that look nice. I like my systems to look as boring/plain as possible.

I think the two biggest problems with faceplates were that they didn't 'blend' with the rest of the console.. ie they stuck out like a sore thumb on a white console, and the fact the majority of them are designed for vertical consoles, when most people have them horizontally.

Would have been better if they just made them cheap as fuck, but they were like 20 bucks or some shit. Seriously? What the fuck?

EDIT:

So instead of coming to the conclusion that it wasn't the worst idea ever, it was just overpriced, they decided to say "fuck it" and flat out kill the entire idea? That pisses me off even more. The special edition faceplate with the green squiggles that only came out in limited numbers at the 2005 E3 looked legit as hell.

Two were free from my elite purchase, bought the ff13 plate when best buy screwed up and put it up for $10. Now I have an S console :(

Paid a hundred whoppers for this on eBay -->

I knew it could be removed but I don't think there was ever any replacements released for it.
Nintendo of America's online store sold them for years, right next to the GameCube's Broadband Adapter. They were only available in one flavor, default.

i got that too but i got it for retail prices when it first came out. still goes for quite a bit. those DoA collectors are hardcore.

I bought a "woody" faceplate on a lark for $2.95 on the clearance rack at TRU. My brother loves it and it's on his Xbox. I have the Deathsmiles faceplate on my Elite. It's actually keeping me from upgrading to a slim because it rules so much.

I wanted the Tales of Vesperia faceplate, but guess what, Limited Edition and only available when you Preorder the game. How can I be interested in this.

I know, it really was pricey. The box it came in was so big too :lol

I still have it scattered over my room - the box above my bed, the game on my shelf, the faceplate um, somewhere and the figs lovingly displayed <3

I bought the Viva Pinata one for $1 at K-Mart and put it on the 360 to annoy my girlfriend. After a few months, we both ended up thinking that other 360s looked weird without one. I also have an Alan Wake one from E3 '09 that I think was limited to a few hundred.

I'm a very Animu lover, so... where can I find any of this ones ?
Not sure about the rest, but the Deathsmiles faceplate comes with the Limited Edition version of the game. It's on Amazon for $37 (includes game, faceplate, and soundtrack).

Amazon Link

The reason why cell phone covers are popular and these aren't is because cell phone covers also serve as protection in case it's dropped and from an aesthetic standpoint you can show it off to other people. Not so many people are going to see an Xbox 360 plate and it serves no practical function. I'm not sure why Microsoft thought they'd become popular.

I still have mine... pretty sure you were only supposed to get it if you preordered PGR3 but as I just bought it on launch day they gave it to me anyway (without me asking). It's the only non-white one I ever had so technically, 100% of my non-standard faceplates are awesome. I win! Kinda wish I had the Bioshock and launch team Alien Hominid-esque ones though.

I got two when I bought the Elite that came with them. I actually put on the graphite or whatever it's called on my black one recently.. looks okay. I got the limited edition one back at E3 '04 (or '05?) but it had a broken component or two so I could never use it.

They mentioned faceplates specifically though. Snap-on faceplates were just to change the color of your phone, they didn't provide protection.

I have lusted after that one since E3 2005. I'd still love to have one, but to this day they go for insane amounts of money. It's too bad the only cool faceplates were all limited edition (E3 2005, Launch Team, Zero Hour). Both Launch Team designs were great. The one posted before and this one:

Not all of them were ugly.

Problem was, all the really good looking and cool ones were super limited edition plates and not sold. You had to jump through hoops or pay out the ass just to pick one up.

Microsoft gave me a Viva Piñata 360 faceplate after Party Animals wrapped up. I still wear it on my 360 with pride :)
My daughter and I still play Party Animals every so often. I have a Viva Pinata faceplate, too, which I got for a couple of bucks.

Quite frankly, faceplates look ugly because it's only one section of the 360. If they allowed modification of the entire xbox to match the plate, it would be cool.

Tales of vesperia one only came with the jp 360 system bundle...I got it off yahoo japan auctions for a premium. Comes with a scriptbook of the first scenario too.

Idolmaster was only with the limited edition. Again yahooj auctions.

Eternal sonata was domestic preorder bonus with gamestop. I got serveral from working there... hehe

Deathsmilies was available in the domestic limited editon. First pressing

Yup, that's what decalgirl.com is a better alternative.
It $25 compare to the $15 the faceplates were though, but they cover the entire thing.

I bought a Viva Pinata one which came with a dashboard theme.

Still like the characters, but I removed the face plate from it a while back now and the dashboard theme isn't very compatible with the nxe or whatever the dashboard is called now, so I don't use that either.

They were giving out Dark Sector ones at PAX '07. Only one I've ever used or probably ever will use unless I get another free one.

It's because of the title of your thread man! The title!

The face plates look tacky as hell, almost as bad as the people who design gaming mouses.
