MS refunding repair fee, extending warranties on 360's made before Jan. 06

Nothing is wrong with mine (well, a crash every here and there but that is acceptable)

This is how it works. Mine did that for months, then one day Red Blinking Lights
. Replaced for free, but now my replacement is giving me the "use a soft cloth" message nearly every time I play a game.

Good. Now they need to take the next step and provide NEW - not refurbished - consoles with an extended warranty.

I wonder who had 13 hours in the office "when will this news leak out to the public" pool. :lol

For the record, this will not be an 'indefinite' offer. So don't go thinking all pre-2006 consoles have lifetime warranties or anything.
Any other comments I'll leave in the capable hands of the community reps.

Great for launch buyers if it pans out, but the intentions behind it confuse me. It seems counter-intuitive.

Its rather arbitrary to offer repairs just for consoles before 2006. It would just make a stronger case for people whose 2006 consoles break after the warranty expires that its a systemic problem with the manufacturing.

Yes. Then I'll buy one, without fear of it breaking down after 3 months, and forking out cash. Purchasing extended warranty is not a viable excuse.

So, what are the cons of getting a new system? You need to be on Live for Marketplace/Arcade titles to "authorize" it each time, right?

Interesting. I just got my warranty contract in the mail. Took months for that to go through. The first time I sent it, they sent it back claiming I didn't put the serial number on there. Which was weird, because they sent back the form I filled out and the serial was perfect...Come to think of it, the warranty contract they sent me only says Xbox...No 360 on there at all...

So, uh, what were your guys' experience with getting the warranty?

Exact same thing, I got it yesterday.

I'm heading home this weekend, so I'll check if MS sent me a letter. I'll be damned if they dont give me a free year after paying them $60 bones back in December.

WoW, if that's true, it would be excellent. My launch 360 is working fine at the moment but I have been worried that it might break I start using it for the good games this fall. I think free repairs is the right thing for MS to do.

My baby's still rolling, but that sounds far too good to be true.
Yea.

EDIT: Holy crap it's true? Damn MS, nice move. This is a bigger megaton than 1080p.

EDIT 2: My 360 was manufactured on 01/04/06, three days after the cutoff that Xbox.com post mentions. Son of a bitch.

Wait a sec. This is only true if the build date is from 2006? How do you check that? I got mine in January (the beginning of January infact) so I don't know if I barely made the cut for this or not.

I haven't had any problems with my system (knock on wood) and I already have a one year extended warranty but I wouldn't mind looking into this anyway.

the manu date is under the serial # on the back.

Wow.

I'm amazed you guys paid all that money for repairs. I'm even more amazed that MS is doing this.

I have an Oct 2005 unit and never really had any problems. Is the free repair thing indefinite?

ok she finally got back to me, and this is what she told me:

its for all consoles purchased before jan 2006
you can't purchase an extended warranty, but there is currently no end date for the 'promo'

I forgot to ask if it keeps on when you get a refurbbed console. Like, will it still be indefinite after I get my refurb?

she told me you get a 90 day warranty with the refurb

All right double the warranty, one with Best Buy and one with MS just in case. Time to call my girlfriend's nephew to let him know, his 360 has been broken for two months now.

The rep I'm on the phone with has no clue whatsoever as to this program, but there are far too many people confirming this.

EDIT: Here we go. Finally making some progress.

EDIT 2: She confirmed that they are in fact reimbursing those that have paid for an Xbox 360 console repair, and they can expect to be credited within 3 to 4 weeks. However, she didn't have any more specific data available, so she couldn't confirm if this was for everyone or just for those whose consoles were made before a specific date.

The rep I spoke to played dumb until I told her I read it on xbox.com and then she suddenly had a 'file' to check

Talk to a supervisor.

so no retroactive extended warranty purchases for refurbed consoles? I already had one break and never thought about picking up an extended warranty on it until later. ****ers.

Its better for them to do this than to lose future sales from a bad reputation.

It certainly is better for them in the long run. It is much easier to gain back lost money from this than to gain back a lost customer.
