[?] MS to push Xbox One wireless on PC, fight Bluetooth [?]

Let's see how UWP lovers side on this.

Or, as Microsoft puts it: “Going forward, you should expect to see both new PCs and new accessories that support Xbox Wireless as we create new ways for our fans to play seamlessly across devices.”

And it’s not just for Xbox controllers anymore either. Microsoft name-drops partners from Astro to PDP to Turtle Beach, meaning we can expect to see Xbox Wireless included in headset tech soon, as well as joysticks, et al. The standard supports up to eight peripherals at once, though headsets are limited to stereo sound.

I don't mind it, I'm using the wireless stick anyway and it has been 100% reliable for me so far.
If that means I can have more wireless devices with reliable connection and without pairing trouble, I'm all for it. BT is always hit or miss for me.

Please don't get a job writing headlines professionally, OP.

I'm super curious about bluetooth because my xbox controllers don't connect well to my PC (wireless, in the next room) but my Steam controller is 100% fabulous.

Not seeing the drama here. Xinput is already the defacto standard for pc controllers, seems a logical step to integrate a seamless wireless gaming standard with it.

And this is related to UWP, how?

So what are the specs here? Is it better than bluetooth? I know i've had connection issues with both bluetooth and Xbox One controllers.

So companies want to use their tech so we can use their products on pc and xbox.
That's suppose to be a bad thing?

Yes when it's a push for a closed proprietary technology, and that's even more apparent when existing technologies already exist that can do this very thing.

Moving past the subject of the wireless standard, I get the feeling I won't be interested in any of these supported devices. The Steam Controller is already better than any controller out there and for the foreseeable future, and just happens to miraculously and easily connect between my PC and Steam Link box. Headsets, especially wireless ones, and even more so gaming branded ones are a complete joke. And as for a "Joystick", which I'm assuming they mean arcade stick or flight stick, you wouldn't want wireless for either.

And this is related to UWP, how?

It's the same sort of move, honestly. Windows isn't per se removing support for regular executables or Bluetooth but Microsoft really wants you to use their new thing for reason that doesn't appear clear at the moment. Especially since the article mentions keyboards running on that.

Anyway, thread is available for locking. Xbox Connect, seriously? Can't they settle on one name?

Oh goodie, a proprietary bastardization of wifi direct that adds licensing costs because MS will privilege it over bluetooth.

The most annoying thing about this is that they're using this on headsets too. The headphone market already sucks because you need separate headphones for everything and it's really difficult to find the one headset that works on them all: Xbox One, PS4, PC and your phone.

I ended up getting a Turtle Beach Elite 800, which solves the problem by having three different inputs it can receive sound from: its own transmitter which gives the best sound quality (intended for PS4 with optical out and USB mic input, but works on PC too), and then there's Bluetooth support and a 3.5mm jack. And this thing isn't very affordable, seems like the normal price of it is around €350-400, but I ended up getting it on a sale for €250.

So what does this have to do with Microsoft's new thing? Well, this is another stupid standard for everyone to support. It's proprietary too so don't expect to listen to music with your Android or iOS phone with your Xbox Certified Headset unless it's doing the thing that Elite 800 does and supports all kinds of inputs (hey, good reason to jack up the price)!

But just to reiterate, literally no actual connection.

It's a separate move, by the same company, involving the same product. Yes, it doesn't specifically affect UWP. But it all allows making PC more of a closed platform in the long run if it takes off. So no, there is a connection.

What? Their new controller has bluetooth in it specifically for PC connections. They're just expanding their connection tech and actually allowing 3rd party hardware developers to use it.

Good try though.

After mismanaging the UWP reputation so much that they had to add UWP sideloading to the mix, the most sensible thing to do was to try to go hard on again with the hardware and hope no one will draw parallels or at least get angry, yeah. Why did they miss the chance? /s

"Microsoft don't care if you buy games on Xbox or PC"

The relevant part here is they profit from proprietary peripheral licensing on Xbox but not on PC, so this is an attempt to move in on the third party PC peripheral market.

Fight Bluetooth!
Fight that proprietary patented, licensed technology with another proprietary technology

Fight fight fight!
I may have no idea what I'm talking about, but is Bluetooth support a big thing in PC gaming now?

Doesn't seem like they are fighting Bluetooth at all... Just leveraging the Xbox brand, hoping to sell proprietary Xbox gear to PC users, and license the brand name to PC manufacturerers

They just added bluetooth to the new revision of xbox controllers, made it a big selling point, and are selling custom made xbox controllers with bluetooth as well.

This is some real DEVIOUS SHIT™ going on here

Most diabolical

.. but they just added Bluetooth to the One controller that comes with the S and any new controllers made after the S comes out. Come again?

Yeah, if they were interested in seeing bluetooth fail they wouldn't spend the time to include bluetooth in their new controllers...

So...what am I supposed to be angry about again?

Bluetooth is proprietary yes. But it's a standard. Adding Xbox wireless's special version of wifi direct is just MS's attempt to force companies to pay an additional licensing fee to duplicate functionality already offered by the standard technology in the Bluetooth protocol.

OP do you always word your threads like an evil robot mixed with Buzzfeed?

or like a sub-boss on a Sonic game entering a new attack phase

Exactly.

But, judging by the other thread isn't their version better then Bluetooth for controllers and what not? Plus, why put BT in their new controllers then if they want to control the market or whatever you think they are doing. Are they forcing companies to use it?

Yes, here is the reason.
