MS Unveils Avatars, New Dashboard Interface for X360

well miis are fun ya know? But nintendo doesn't do shit with them aside put them in some games on occasion, MS is much better at this kind of thing and I could see them winning people over.

Plus I'm sure they'll be much more open to having game-related content integration in a hell of fun way. They really did just aim straight down the middle between HOME and Miis.

I just hope you can have multiple Avatars per Gamertag.

And I hope at some point Gorillaz are involved.

:D

Thats pretty much the one thing that would make avatars worthwhile in my mind
I agree. I want to be greeted by Master Chief, even if everybody out there has the same avatar. That would be worthwile.

I hope that new dashboard stay's with no ADS as it was show... I don't like paying for live and getting ADS blasting in my face on every blade :(

The ads will most likely be a part of the Game Shows. How else will we be able to get real prizes? :P

I really want to see this 8-person party system in action.
I want to see if it's as hateful as it looks in the conference video: One person wants to play UNO? Everyone in the party plays UNO regardless of what they were doing before! Woo!!!

The new interface would be considerably better without the avatars IMO. I never had a big problem with the blades though FWIW.

they've stated already that you don't have to be in the same game...

I actually like the whole interferce. It looks really clean but the avatars just seem to be a hassle to me. THey'll be cool at the beggining just like the miis but maybe Microsoft will learn to use them more effectively.

can't wait til Fall.

I'll reserve judgement until I see the avatars in person but they are not objectionable to me.

the rest of the interface, Netflix and the Live Party stuff rocks

Blades was cool and defined ths system... it was a very significant part of the X360, i seriously don't get the point of changing it.
For what?
To add LAME Mii-like avatarZ (and i love Miis, it's just that these one are fucking ugly as hell and feel like copycats) and a menu that's been evidently ripped off from Singstar?
Really, i don't understand.

ME = do NOT like.

And Microsoft, you lost some points today, i was planning to buy the Volf gamer image but...

Too much sprawl, and way too much text. It could have worked but they botched it, so they might as well start over.

SO many awesome announcements.

And to think Microsoft isn't done with their announcements/showings for the week. ;)
How do you know? They might be.

We get this shit every year. "E3's not over yet" etc etc. But the fact is that there's rarely been an announcement made following an E3 press conference.

This real prizes thing is the coolest thing EVER. Hopefully it won't just be a pen or a cuddly toy. Either way, if it's free to play, I'll be playing all the damn time for prizes!

That's kind of the problem.

Uh..?

Except that's not a problem.

They're taking parts of HOME without being bloated and Second Life-ish.

And taking Miis and making them actually.. you know.. interesting. Miis are useless on Wii.

Avatars will work better on Xbox because of the community aspect that's already in place. Wii has no community aspect.

Blades work great....if there was one button that could bring me back to the main system blade.

As long as I can use the new system and keep my gamer picture, without using the Xmii, I will be happy.

Yes, communities of the racist 11-year-olds.

And if Wii or PS3 had the structure of Xbox Live, it have "racist 11-year-olds" too.

But you're exaggerating as it is.

So stop.

I don't see how they could resist another jab at Sony tomorrow, maybe as payback for the CES HD DVD surprise.

Speak for yourself.
This.

If I will ever get in thos 8-ppl Live chats etc., it will be with contacts from my Friendslist.

So, is the new interface coming out before Home? That would be another low blow against Sony IMO.

I dont like the Avatars, but I do like the interface.

They didn't really "botch" it, but they did underestimate the amount of content that would be available (hell, the Marketplace blade was a later addition) and the market's desire to get that content. Harmonix pretty obviously did the same with Rock Band, hence the later patched in music store and the way DLC is going to be handled in RB2 (vastly greater incorporation). I don't think the complete reboot MS is doing is the only solution, but any solution to the existing system was going to probably be pretty severe (either more blades, a total reworking of the menus, or both).

Sony did a better job of keeping the (messy) store separate, but there's also far less content available. The 360 and PS3 method of browsing DD games is basically identical, but over 40 XBLA games simply takes longer to scroll through than my 6 PSN games. I'm surprised that neither have moved to a radial system yet.

Oh come on. The GAF community that exists on XBL is awesome, and a party system like this will really enhance the experience.

And please, PSN has its fair share of douchebag kids, too.

I'm willing to bet money that there will be multiple KKK halls on Home within 6 months of starting. And that at least 5% of them will be actual KKK halls and not just hipsters trying to be cute with Simpsons references.

I showed the dash and some of the casual stuff to the wife, we agreed that this shit is kinda hot. The Primetime thing is going to get a lot of playtime with the wife and kids.

They should really decouple the DD storefront from the system browser. The ability to buy content online is a huge step in the right direction. There needs to be video, pictures, recommendations, user generated content, and everything else people expect from the web these days.

They didn't really show off all the avatars very well, the leak made it clear that you'll be decorating them with Game & Movie related content.

I think they add a potentially really cool way to give people achievement benefits, imagine if I could earn Recon for my Avatar in Halo 3, or dress it up as a COG for GoW2 release. It's a hell of a lot better that the stupid gamerpics that no one even looks at.

That's nice to know, but is that because you have the option to quit out of the game before it starts, or can you prevent being dragged into it in the first place? The video and the gizmodo preview both mentioned "dragging", and that's the bit I don't like the look of.

Have you seen Windows Media Center interface before?

And you can still use your gamer pics for your gamer card.
Making your avatar is not mandatory.

Hey, so when will the Fall update be available for download?

No one knows. The answer to that question has never ever been posted before. It's a shame, really.

Yes, communities of the racist 11-year-olds.

I think he's talking about our current communities as they exist. Ie. when I log onto my 360, I often see GAFers I know here, playing online. Not some random "11 year old".

My only complaint is it looks a bit boring, if the background colours were to change each time we shift through each section that'd be awesome.

For example like we have it now.

Y'know im really keen about this and it looks like a nice visual upgrade to an already great dashboard. Would like to know more about it and some specific features such as the 1:100 thing.

Or like how the PS3 does it's default BG, with it changing with the time of day.

Yeah it does looks a bit boring. It reminds me of the apple cover flow.
I dunno, I like the simplicity of the blades, but a whole new dashboard is kinda cool :-)
