MTV: Reggie about Hardcore-Games

swerve said:
Well, come on, GAF - and all of gaming - has gotten so confused about core, hardcore, casual and social gaming over the past five years.

I'm a pretty hardcore panel-de-pon and beatmania player, I play Rez most weekends, I can ace a level-9 song on DDR and I can clear Super Mario World on one life (and regularly do).

I never play GTA, God of War, or 3rd person run-around-and-hit-people games, and I'm terrible at MW2 online.

I think that means I'm casual nowadays, right?

Give this guy a cookie, Respect is duelly earned here! :D

Anyway, it's obvious that the interviewer was referring to "mature" titles as in M rated violent games. Reggie can't exactly say that there's nothing good on the Wii in terms of M rated titles and he can't bad mouth the games or the developers/publishers who make these games and then don't advertise them.

Simple PR fluff (and we know that Nintendo staff don't really like making violent GOW or COD style games anyway)

What he actually said

"I can lay out a tremendous amount of games that are very high quality that have gone largely ignored by the very consumers who are asking for it."

Which is true. Both in terms of "mature" games and "core" games.

...although perhaps he should have said "ignored or pirated by the very consumers asking for it.".

I notice plenty of core/mature games seem to do well on torrent sites where they are "free".
Indeed, there are a multitude of excellent games, whether they're about teddy bears and unicorns or eating people alive.

One of the best games on Wii will never even get a sequel because you fucking dickwads didn't buy it god i hate you all

I wanted to chime in and say that New Super Mario Bros Wii kicks the shit out of those games, but then again, it's a platformer and they don't count, do they?
depends on the Metacritic rating.

I think Red Steel 2 will be the final test. If a high-quality sequel to a million-seller with ground-breaking controls and a pack-in motion+ can't sell this game.....all hope is lost. Seriously. All hope.
It will be telling, but I don't think it can be considered a "final test". It's hard to take the whole "sequel to a million seller" thing seriously because the original Red Steel benefited heavily from being a launch title without any real equivalent competition. It also got a lukewarm critical reception and negative word of mouth that probably aren't doing anything to help the sequel. If the game utterly bombs it's obviously a bad sign, but anyone pinning their hopes on this one being a hit of blockbuster proportions isn't being very realistic.

Oh come on now. Call it a new interpretation or whatever. It's not a new chapter either.

It really is. It shares the basic premise of Silent Hill (PSX), but the actual story, layout, gameplay, and genre of the game are totally different.

Anyway, SH is not a Triple-A titel. It's metacritics score isn't even at 80%. That's kinda low compared to the other entries of the series.

It's a game that's worth playing by any standard. If you don't buy games simply because their metacritic scores aren't high enough, you'll miss out on an enormous amount of great games--and that's true of any platform, not just the Wii.

he's right for a part. The wii does have some great titles.

they just look like fucking shit (compared to ps3 ,360 and pc) and hardcore gamers want them to look good.
They're also dumbed down compared to hardcore games on ps3 and 360.

Insert console master race.gif.

It's amazing how little buzz is about that title, considering it looks like the wii is finally getting a third party game with high production values. Nobody seems to care about it.

A lot of the impressions we got came from E3, and they seemed mixed at best. While I applaud Ubisoft for giving it extra time in development for all the wrinkles to be ironed out it could come back to bite them in the ass. Amidst the hype of titles like God of War 3 and FFXIII it's going to have to fight for breath. It's also got to perform decently out of the gate to make a dent because stuff like Galaxy 2 and Other M are on the horizon for the Wii. Assuming it reviews well and the people that pick it up really enjoy it I think the next most important thing is for Ubisoft to make sure it's getting proper exposure.

But yeah, it sucks for the developers that everyone seems pretty low key about the whole thing. If a 3rd party had this sort of software around during the excruciating dry spell at the end of '08 they probably could have made a killing. Right now there's a lot working against it. Who knows though, if it comes out and blows people away maybe it'll carve out a decent audience.

I'm not a hater.

I have a Wii and not a PS3 or Xbox360. But that doesn't mean that I lie to myself and pretend that it has all the more mature/adult content on it.

Why can't they just admit that their main focus is on the younger or not so serious gaming crowd. It's obvious it is anyway.

I remember that in the beginning whenever Nintendo was asked how they were going to compete with the other platforms they would always same something along the lines of, "we are not in direct competition with them, we are doing our own thing".

So if they are claiming that they are not really in direct competition with the other guys why do they keep having to spout this crap about our system has something for everyone. Everyone should be happy.

But thats crap.
Yes there are some games on the Wii that a more serious "hardcore" gamer can enjoy, but nothing near the amount that would satisfy them.

The Wii is the place for people that really just don't care about games, that want to turn on a system with a group of people the laugh and have some silly fun, or the Nintendo fanboy.

PS3 and Xbox360 are for people that love games. That are really into their hobby and are serious about it.

That doesn't mean that one or the other is bad, it just means they are different.

Just admit it Nintendo.
Or as of late Sony and Microsoft with their motion shit.

Haha what a crock of absolute horseshit.

If you're gonna troll at least be clever or funny about it. If not for us, for yourself. Where's your pride, man?

because you are to lazy to do any research and buy a good game for it? You skipped NSMB Wii,Muramasa, Silent Hill, HoTD Overkill, Capcom vs Tatsunoko, Madworld etc etc that is your damn fault

Yeah.. Considering how awful this console gen is (in terms of games), you're kinda right.

By the end of this gen, I'll probably have spent more time playing Windows Solitaire than playing games on my PS3 or my desktop PC :lol

And what the hell does triple-A really mean?
Originally, it means big budget, and has nothing to do with quality. People on boards have their own meaning, though...

I agree with many here that there's a huge difference between games rated M and adult games.

Hardcore Nintendo games? Is that when Mario saves the Princess, takes her back to the castle, she smiles at him seductively, Daisy's there alongside her, a funky bass line kicks in, and... well, I'm sure you can guess what happens next...

He fixes the plumbing?

(Yes, I know the quote's wrong, but the original line just doesn't make sense in this context!)

This guy is a fuckin cunt.

EVERY SINGLE interview he does, he is asked about mature games and he always says, we have lots of mature games for older gamers. But he has been using Resident Evil 4 as an example for 3 years now.

What a joke. Can't he just admit that the Wii is not the playground for more adult gamer. How can he say that crap with a straight face?
Because he's the president of Nintendo of America and it's not entirely in his best interest to go around giving interviews where he points out the faults with his company's products.

Post of the thread. I'm not sure when the term "hardcore" was hijacked by the group that insists on every game being M-rated.

Castor Krieg said:
It doesn't matter if there are mature games for the Wii, or hardcore games as well. The point is that both the X360 and PS3 have vastly superior library when it comes to core/hardcore gaming. Saying "we have core games" is the same as saying "we got Bayonetta for PS3, so it's cool!". You cannot simply HAVE the games, in today's competitive industry you need to actively try and have the best product offering, or people will go elsewhere. It is obvious that Nintendo alone cannot support core gaming on the Wii, despite wonderful games they make (Metroid, Zelda, Mario, etc.). However 3rd parties see where the money is, and they go to PS3/X360. CoD MW 2 sold 6.5 million? How much of that is on X360? Would it sell so much on Wii? Ofc not, the user base is different.

The blame rests both with Nintendo, for not encouraging core games development early on, because they were to concentrated on pushig casual titles; as well as on 3rd parties, who treated Wii as a means to make a quick buck aka shit games, and when it didn't work they go "omg, hardocre games don't sell on the Wii".

IMO the situation will not improve this generation, the % of casual gamers on Wii is too big right now. If Nintendo wants to bring back hardcore it needs to push hardcore games from Day 1 on their next hardware.

you are the truthiest person in this thread.

It happened when "hardcore" also became the lable for top-tier games for the upper-echelon demographic of gaming

It started when the psp was getting crushed in sales by the ds. Then the retards just kept it going when the wii started dominating.

I tried to like this game, but it really is a mediocre experience through and through.

It´s not. Actually, it´s one of the finest pieces of software released this year, only topped by ME2. But you can visit the SH-thread to see why that is so.

@topic:

Of course, Reggie is right. At this point.
We´re talking about gamers like Gaffers, so who bought Silent Hill: Shattered Memories? Almost nobody. Who´s going to buy Fragile? Even less people. Monser Hunter 3? Wouldnt suprise me if a lot of idiots ignore it now that a new PSP-MH has been announced. RS2 will also fail, while Sony-fans talk in the Move-thread about how great motion-control will be. And so on.

I´ve seen it so many times, even on Gaf, that people only care abour Mario and Zelda. And then complain about the Wii not having games. Well, there are games. But they´re not super-hyped, sigh.

Well, I´m afk, Fragile, which was released in Europe today, should have arrived :)

Seriously? People can even think like this?

Anyone who is complaining here and hasn't played SHSM doesn't know what they're looking for. It's a mature, interesting experience through and through.

My problem with Nintendo's core output is with its refusal to invest in western developers. After seeing what happened with Silicon Knights I know why they chose not to invest in them, but why not Factor 5, or even more importantly their already internally owned studios like NST and Retro? It is incomprehensible that Nintendo has not yet expanded the size of Retro, it's located in Austin, TX which is one of the preeminent emerging tech clusters in the U.S. So obviously the talent is there and everyone knows Nintendo has the money - so what's the problem? Same question with NST.

What is a hardcore game anyway?

For me its a game that has its strenghts in its gameplay mechanics and level design because these are things unique to the medium.
Many games are dressed up with things borrowed from other media like plot and cinematics which IMO makes them casual games.

For me a real hardcore game is a mario game, its strengths lie in the creativity and variety of the gameplay and level design. The plot and visuals for these games are simple and universaly friendly- they exist so that it is possible to experience the gameplay.

The way the term "hardcore game" is used by most seems to refer to what i would call "mainstream" games which, while often being enjoyable experiences, are typically derivative and repetative.
CoD MW is a good example of this; the game mechanics while solid and fun are the same throughout the whole game and have existed for well over a decade. The reason the game is so much fun is due to the "cool" visual theme and realisation of the fantasy of shooting people in the face.

Unfortunatly very few developers even come close to making games as hardcore as nintendo does, why bother when a fresh lick of paint on an old game will sell like hot cakes.
