MTV to Shut Down Music Channels After 40 Years as Paramount Restructures Global Network

Good times. A channel that defined a rebellious, counter-culture of a generation. Set a tidal cultural wave impact in terms of trends, art, fashions and icons. I'll miss it.

Last I checked, its devolved into an abundance of reality TV shows which have nothing in common with what it originally was about. It slowly began to decline once the internet took off. Now, people can independently make their own artistic music vids on places like Youtube or whatever.

I thought it was all reality tv shows nowadays, they still had music channels in the EU? LOL..

Shout out to my favourite VJ of theirs, Paul King.

Maybe it's my age, or the fact that I haven't had cable since I lived with my parents as a kid, but I didn't realize that MTV even still existed.

That song is so old they use the word "faggot" thrice in the lyrics and they didn't get canceled.

Now that's old!
most versions of the song on streaming just cut out that entire verse lol, although it's not hard to find the full one.

I had some good times with MTV, with shows like Celebrity Deathmatch, Daria, Beavis Butthead, Drawn Together...

The late 90s were a good time. It had its Dark Ages, like 2000, specifically 2001, when there was a similar show in Mexico, where I appeared on television interviewing a Norwegian pop group.

Wait, you were a TV host? Link to the clip?

I remember when MTV was synonymous with rock bands ... No other genre UNTIL Thriller came out (the album AND the music video/short film). That opened the floodgates for other genres of music (R&B, Hip hop, Soul, etc).

These are crazy times we live in.

I never in my life thought I'd witness the fall of MTV...

I thought it would last longer and preserve the culture of music videos. I think YouTube, AI, Covid, and social media... were the titanic blows the network suffered.

The final nail in the coffin was those idiotic shows like The Real world...

I'll assume MTV went down the tubes similar to MuchMusic in Canada. Once these channels stopped showing music, it was all about surviving based on a new direction. If music videos went down the tubes because artists dont do them anymore(?), that's fine. They could still talk music. Beavis and Butthead, Ren & Stimpy were fun as quirky cartoons, but it was really odd when Much showed mainstream Simpsons episodes.

I guess music channels couldnt strike magic like all those other channels like TLC, Discovery, History Channel, A&E etc... All very topic focused channels back in the day about science, history, or biographies. Then they all went crazy with reality shows like the 500 lb woman, cosmetic surgeries gone wrong, Storage Wars and such which were big hits and dirt cheap to make. And all the old school content disappeared.

Music channels just couldnt adapt the same way, which viewers were fine with the other channels. Or simply any weird content they showed just didnt get viewers like the million episodes of Storage Wars.

Heck, even HLN (which is supposed to be Headline News) shows reruns of Forensic Files or other crime shows for probably 20 hours per day. The remaining hours are some kind of CNN news but the not the same as their main station. Even it survives.

Final nail in the coffin? Real World first aired over 30 years ago.
They basically were dead in the water as soon as you could watch music videos from whatever artist you wanted to on the Internet.

Only Internationally, the US music channels are still active for now, as are the Pluto TV FAST channels. This does make me wonder what they will do with the archive of music videos MTV Europe has, There are quite a few music videos on Youtube that are actually MTV captures, suggesting the original copies are no longer available.

I thought it was dead already a long time ago?

I thought MTV was shit for 20+ years already?

Okay, i suppose nothing of value was lost then.

Internet killed the music video stars.

If that song is not the last song. There is no justice.

It was for MTV Music.

MTV 90's last song was Goodbye by the Spice Girls:

Club MTV's last song was Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music:

MTV Live's Last Song was Robyn - Dancing On My Own:

MTV 00's Last Song was Bye Bye Bye - N'Sync:

MTV Germany's Last Song was Musique Non-Stop by Kraftwerk (killer video) :

MTV turned into Roby Dyrdek's personal station for quite a while now. Ridiculousness has been playing pretty much 24/7 on there for years.

As someone who was born and raised in Canada, I didn't really grow up with MTV. Instead we had Much Music, which was Canada's version of MTV, and while Much Music did have a lot of its own programming and played a lot of Canadian produced music, it still aired a large majority of music videos that debuted on MTV and even acted as an affiliate station for a lot of MTV programming. Much Music was a proxy for MTV content.

Much Music died a decade before MTV and fell victim to playing a lot of reality TV shows, completely abandoning music videos altogether. But there was a brief period of time in 2010 to 2024 where MTV took over the old Much Music studios and became MTV Canada. but even that was short lived and discontinued in December 2024.

Much Music Canada was actually pretty dope for a brief while. It was helmed by the people who use to run Much Music, and they brought back a lot of old Much Music formats. But it was all branded as MTV Canada. probably due to the licensing rights around the Much Music name. But unfortunately there wasn't enough viewers as Youtube and Vevo really dominated the music video scene.

Can't say ive watched MTV or a music video in 15 years but its sad to see times changing.
That's right... although later I complained that they gave more importance to commercial songs and groups... and didn't care about showing or giving more promotion to foreign groups or groups with niche songs.

I would think the cost of running those channels would be pretty low so there really must be no one watching to shut down essentially AI run playlists.

If you would've told me MTV music channels have been off the air since 2003 I would've believed you. Haven't seen one since the 90s.
