Naruto is to Ghibli what Britney Spears is to BoA. Don't even think about Naruto when you're deciding which Ghibli film to watch.

Right, I've known that for quite a while. The problem is, the few friends I have who are into anime are into the lame stuff. Naruto doesn't enter into my mind when I'm looking at Ghibli films, but it does get pushed on me when I ask the few people I know about Anime (or more often, what they shove at me whether I want it or not).

Yeah, it would indeed look ridiculous without any context. Actually, these long running shonen manga are often ridiculous anyway, but what do you expect from what's essentially a kids' series. They can still be entertaining, but I would never use them to introduce someone to some quality anime (unless they were a kid). Definitely go with some of those suggestions Roody gave if you get the time and have the interest, though.

Absolutely, I know they're a very narrow field of Anime, just as there are different genres and audiences of anything. And I do know that it's not aimed at adults (although all of the people who recommend that stuff are... at least according to their driver's licenses, though I question their maturity).

I'll definitely look at the ones Roody mentioned (several of which I have heard of before and seen snippets of), as well as dig through the threads Branduil mentioned.

As always, thanks for the kind nudgings and lack of head-ripping, anime GAF.

Joe Hisaishi is amazing. I get chills when I listen to the songs in this thread. Although it's not my favorite Miyazaki movie, I think Spirited Away has the best music.

You know things are bad when a Joe Hisaishi thread (or at the very least, an important section of his work) is titled as "Music from Miyazaki Movies" - not to disparage the OP nor the thread itself, but it's a little sad.

Maybe I should really finish off that Studio Ghibli thread I was going to do all those years ago.

Well the OP did mention Joe in the thread itself. I think having Miyazaki in the title will help bring in more people as most will not instantly associate Joe Hisaishi with scoring Miyazaki's films. Once they enter the thread, they will then discover the greatness of Joe Hisaishi and will forever link his name with the great scores of those films. ;D

Actually, I've been familiar with Hisaishi's works for years. The reason I titled the thread the way I did was because of the Nausicaa tune I posted... which was not composed by Hisaishi.

I may be straying away from topic a little bit but I've always love the main theme from the Ghibi film Only Yesterday.

Neither Hisaishi nor Miyazaki though. (As far as I know.)

I can agree with others that Joe Hisaishi is amazing. I think Spirited Away and Mononoke were the ones that led me onto his music.
Nowadays Ive tended to enjoy his Takeshi Kitano movie soundtracks more than his Ghibli ones though. Hana-bi in particular.

It is my duty to point out that Spirited Away - Nausicaa In the Valley of the Wind - Laputa, Castle In the Sky - Princess Mononoke - Totoro No Totoro is by far his best movie.
