Music-Gaf: How's 2009 Been So Far?

Not open for further replies.
Street Sweeper Social Club- self-titled
Dinosaur Jr.- Farm
Jay-Z- The Blueprint III
Eminem- Relapse
Alice In Chains- Black Gives Way To Blue (I really like it.)
Megadeth- Endgame
Living Colour- The Chair In The Doorway

Has anyone listened to the new Cracker album "Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey" to comment? I might buy it later this week. I have the Pearl Jam album but haven't listened to it yet.

I buy too many albums to even know what came out this year. I think the bands I have listed released these albums in 2009.

I aprove of Dinosaur Jr.. the rest of that shit will be forgotten within a week
Oh shit, I hope my credibility didn't just go out the window.

Kastro said:
nope.. you disgrace quality music in general

berlin-bowie is my favorite bowie.. my favorite bowie songs are actually the instrumentals with brian eno.

Bitch.

woopie, going around telling people's music sucks even if it is true somehow is both immature and way uncool. bowie would not be down

You couldn't insult my taste in music if you tried.. yall on the other hand make it too easy.

:lol but i love bowie, i grew up on him. why do i have bad taste? the only thing i've digged you on is oasis (it's sad you defend oasis with a bowie avatar, fess it dude)

nothing sad about oasis dawg.. they even did a cover of bowie's "heroes"

Noel Gallagher is awesome and they dont deserve the hate they get.

theyre the last big british band of the 21st century.

Oh shi....Living Colour has a new cd?!! I just saw Vernon Reid live back in Dec. Loved Colleidoscope, gonna have to check it out. Same with Dinosaur Jr, loved Beyond, havent had a chance to check Farm out yet.

Also I gave Kid Cudi rep for the sah-weet cd cover because Bill Sienkiewicz also did my favorite cd cover of all time, RZA's Bobby Digital. And if you argue thats not a great cd...well thats like your opinion man.

That wasn't my point =/

My point was that the cover art shouldn't (and doesn't) affect the quality of the music.

lol I listen to music thats "huge" across the world...

"your too uneducated to pay attention to music thats outside your own region obviously. you wouldn't know that oasis is loved by millions of people across the globe, in more countries then 10!... we are talking about a band that has effected the industry both in their amazing sales and record charts! but also their pure humanity, donating millions to charities and really directing our world in a brighter greater tomorrow!

Yep I listen to this music, because its huge across the world. You guys suck for enjoying the things you enjoy. You guys should support my branding because I am the right pure version of our species."

I dont understand your argument.. being an irrelevant flavor of the week on pitchfork is somehow more meaningful?

Kastro said:

no, but nor is it less... we are all equal you fucking twat. I obviously share the mindset that the music I listen to is the best, but that doesn't mean it's fact and should be argued. what one listens to is just simply one fucking person's opinion of almost 7 BILLION PEOPLE. Let them enjoy what they enjoy, and if you think they might like the stuff you like, then offer them recommendations! WOAH CRAZY CONCEPT!

I agree it shouldnt but a lot of the time it does. Most iconic music cd's all have memorable covers for one reason or another, whether it be the relation to the music or just an awesome cover. The one cover that sticks in my mind is Judas Priest - Painkiller. I loved this cover for the longest time until I finally actually listened to the cd and then loved it even more.

I think the attention to detail a music artist pays to their music can be reflected in the attention to detail they put into the whole package.

Where does this flavor of the fucking week concept come from? I'm still fucking listening to shit I got into in 2006, just not as much as I was...in 2006. Fuck you Kastro, fuck you and your warped view on music and one's enjoyment of it.

edit fuck shiner bock

Alternatively, I'd argue that a lot of people listen to what they do out of ignorance. It's not always their fault they haven't had the exposure that others have.

Then there's the fans who are just plain idiotic, i.e. any Soulja Boy fan. I don't care what anyone says about opinion, no one can argue that Soulja Boy's "music" is good.

Opinion only exists to a certain extent. If I record myself taking a dump and someone enjoys listening to it, they have bad taste.

Yes, but I don't think they would argue that either. Their enjoyment in regards to music is probably more social/passive. Just as some people don't like Movies beyond the stupid action movie, or books beyond one with pictures.

So yes you could argue why your music is better, it ultimately doesn't matter because they don't give a shit about music in the first place. My point is its a waste of time and those that do it are obviously insecure about their music/tastes, so they need to lash out against others for not being as "eclectic."

Ugh, another thread ruined by Kastro. Every time.

Anyways, some fantastic albums came out in 2009:
Shaka Rock-Jet
Horehound-The Dead Weather
Octahedron-The Mars Volta
Endgame-Megadeth

I think it's been a bit better than 2008.

I don't really know what that means. It exists only to an extent? How does an opinion about anything ever cease to exist? Do you mean has merit to a certain extent? If so then maybe yeah, but my point is that it should never be a conflict in the first place. It should be about educating and appreciating.

Bingo.

And I agree that it should be about educating, not conflict.

Forgive me, I'm an out-of-touch post-alt/metal/hip-hop/electronica fan that listens to mostly sports radio and NPR. Most of my new music comes from recommendations, background music in commercials I like, and random youtube/pandora dives. That being said, if I hear it, it's probably 6 months old, which is like FOR EH VER to you skinny-pant wearin' freaks. So this includes some 2008 stuff too.

I'll go with Phoenix, Santigold, MGMT, Killers, Silversun Pickups, Empire of the Sun, and Passion Pit. Somehow, these bands/singers rescued the Oughts from the hollow/bass-less White Stripes' sound and the bland and dime-a-dozen indie bands. There's an unintentional sound happening here, and it is AWESOME. It's not 80s revival, it's not punk, nor pop, nor rock. I can't describe it, but much in the way that one can turn on the radio and tell what decade some song came from, the late Oughts FINALLY has a sound.

And I fucking love it.

:lol a good deal of these aren't even 2009 and even still it's hilarious.

Thanks for fucking reading, douchebag.

And throw a couple SNSD songs in there too.

chalk it up to beer goggles, saying this decade doesn't have a discernible sound is lol-worthy, nonetheless.

Great albums from:
maudlin of the Well
Coalesce
Bloody Panda
Sunn O)))
Ulcerate
Disappearer
Greymachine
Eagle Twin

Good albums from:
Black Dice
Vivian Girls
Jay Reatard
Pissed Jeans
A Storm of Light
Dysrhythmia
Khanate
Tombs

Still looking forward to albums from:
Converge
Krallice
White Mice
Baroness
A Place to Bury Strangers
Lightning Bolt
Fuck Buttons
Pyramids/Nadja collaboration

Plus a lot of other stuff that I've enjoyed moderately and may go back to later (very few non-metal albums have been sticking with me this year, though). It's hard to really say it without looking at past years' releases more closely, but I think 2009 has been my favorite year for music in a while.

Beer goggles or no, I specifically said the late-oughts and referenced the sound that THOSE selected bands, of which I'm certain are far beneath your enlightened taste, make when viewed from afar. Also, because you can't read, I NEVER said it didn't have a sound, I said this new sound rescued the decade from bland indie bands and the hollow, bass-less White Stripes bullshit. Either way, you're being a schmuck. I started out my fucking post by saying I don't know shit about new music and the first thing you said was OLD!

first, before debating reading comprehension, look at the goddamn thread, it's asking for music released in 2009, you did not add to this.

and, i'd hate to break it to you, but some of those bands you have listed are the prime definition of bland. (silversun pickups is the definition of a bland indie sound, to be certain) i'm sorry for taking things out of context, still, all very lol-worthy. :lol

these are two types of people arguing in here

music lovers who continue to seek out original sounds, embrace new trends, and explore genres (which may or may not be promoted by pitchfork). unfortunately, this has been deemed "indie" for better or worse. lovers of the '00s.

music lovers who refuse to believe that music has evolved beyond their beloved golden era (i.e. 90s arena rock, metal). anything new they embrace resembles that original sound they put on a pedestal. haters of the '00s.

Just wanted to point out that you really haven't contributed much in the way of music from 2009, either. In fact, you've been exceedingly dull and a bit of a fucking cunt about it, too. If I missed a post where you actually said what you liked, feel free to correct the record, schmuck.

they have really great guitar parts too. my girlfriend got me into them, she listens to Bitte Orca all of the fucking time. :lol
andymcc said:
the logic is just as flawed as your initial argument, i know.

here, let's look at how awesome oasis are: they toured with the black crowes and jet. those coked-out fucks really have their fingers on the musical pulse, huh.
andymcc said:
The reason people don't know them: there are much better British punk bands from the 70's.
andymcc said:
haha, speaking of boring production: i defend myself with oasis! this is such sedate rock n roll.

he abandoned you like america did oasis after fm radio was bored with wonderwall. : (

I'm pretty sure We Got it 4 Cheap, Lord Willin' and Hell Hath No Fury all three charted on pitchforks top 200 of the 2000s list. :lol
andymcc said:
anyone that puts the new jay-z on a year-end list and openly admits to watching jimmy fallon has pretty bad taste, no offense.

If nothing else, not only did you also "not add" to this, you turned a discussion that could eventually turn into a nice recommendation thread into an e-penis hipster obfuscation thread. Let's see who can avoid saying what they like the longest!

i talked about where i loved built only 4 cuban linx 2, you quoted it. read before you blindly quote you fucking twat.

the only reason i mainly posted in this thread was to combat kastro, as brandnew said, the good fight.

Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Megadeth - Endgame
Insomnium - Across the Dark
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
Riverside - Anno Domini High Definition
Baroness - Blue
Dream Theater - Black Clouds and Silver Linings
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Sing Along Songs for the Damned and Delirious
Kalisia - Cybion
The Mars Volta - Octahedron
Devin Townsend - Ki
Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect

Probably forgetting a few but 2009 is great.

So true.

alright, alright. i had a list of albums i liked a lot this year, here we go.

Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavilion (i've been a fan since like 2003, i love them, i think it's their best album)
Girls- Album (really great guitar-pop album)
Raekwon- Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 (no shit, duh, best wu album post 2000 w/o ghostface's name on it... though he guests on over half the album)
Phoenix- Wolfgang Amedeus Phoenix (i heard my mom listening to this album, it's not indie hipster shit, right?!)
Dirty Projectors- Bitte Orca (fuck Kastro)
The Antlers- Hospice (really unnerving lyrics)
SunnO)))- Monoliths & Dimensions

i'm drunk and i'm lazy.

Things I liked so far this year:
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
The Antlers - Hospice
Arctic Monkeys - Humbug
Beatles Remasters
Bon Iver - Blood Bank
Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
The Dodos - Time to Die (not nearly as good as Visiter though)
Future of the Left - Travels with Myself
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
The Horrors - Primary Colours
JJ - JJ n°2
Mastodon - Crack The Skye
St. Vincent - Actor
Wixel - Winter
The XX - XX

I've really enjoyed the year, so far, though I also played a bit of catch-up on some releases from last year that I had missed.

RX Bandits - Mandala
Jonsi and Alex - Riceboy Sleeps/All Animals
Drawings - Seven Deadly Sins
fun - Aim & Ignite
Portugal, the Man - The Satanic Satanist/Majestic Majesty
You Just Don't/The Ashtray Life - Monsters and Bird Monsters Split EP
PJ Bond - You Didn't Know I Was Alphabetical

Later this month the new Vital Emcee album comes out, too, which I will no doubt love. All this with the other 10 or so albums I've caught up with from last year means I've had a good few months (I couldn't afford music before about 5 months ago, so this is also a short year so far).

It's been a solid year, but not quite amazing.

The great stuff:
Fever Ray - Fever Ray
Royksopp - Junior
James Lavelle - GU37 Bangkok
OceanLab - Sirens of the Sea Remixed
IAMX - Kingdom of Welcome Addiction
Pati Yang - Songs of Faith + Fury
Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
Massive Attack - Splitting the Atom

Still looking forward to:
Air - Love 2
Royksopp - Senior (?)
FlyKKiller - I, Myself, Am War (?)

Still need:
Tiga - Ciao!
Jon Hopkins - Insides
Dextro - Winded
