Music-Gaf - Indie Pop/Indie Rock Recommendations?

No mention of Arcade Fire? Funeral is fantastically awesome.
And everyone needs to listen to In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. The vocals can be a little off-putting at first, but stick with it and you'll surely be glad you did.
Also I would suggest checking out some TV On The Radio. Dear Science is a great album.

Came here to post TV On The Radio and only that cause I don't listen to Indie Rock but it looks like I was beaten.

Buy yourself Return to Cookie Mountain. You can thank me later :)

All good stuff. I guess we just assumed everone has heard AF and TVotR by now.
Neutral Milk is classic shit too.

Death Cab For Cutie is a must. I'd say start with "Plans", but some people like their older stuff better.

Death Cab's new stuff is mediocre. They were one of my favorite bands in the late 90's/early 2000's, but not so much anymore. The Photo Album is their best album, I'd say start with that and explore their catalog, but there is something lacking in Plans and Narrow Stairs.

Ben really should be working on a new Postal Service album.

Pavement is one of my favorite indie rock bands. Their albums Slanted and Enchanted as well as Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain are really good.

Eels

Belle & Sebastian

Bright Eyes

Okkervil River

Of Montreal

The New Pornographers

The Decemberists

Tullycraft

I don't know any of the bands you listed in OP

but one of my fave "Indie-pop" bands in the past few years is "Stars". They are from Quebec, Canada. Most of their stuff tends to have a very droning style of singing behind them, love it.

Some fave tracks are "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" and "Ageless Beauty" and "Personal".

FRIGHTENED RABBIT

I highly re-recommend their good friends/labelmates, The Twilight Sad. They don't have much in common but the brogue and a taste for the anthemic, but they're fantastic. Really, anyone on Fat Cat is brilliant.

Not sure if this is similar to the OP but the most recent stuff I've been listening to is Algernon Cadwallader. Kinsella-style yadda yadda, I can listen to Some Kind of Cadwallader pretty much on repeat all day long.

Pitchfork gets a lot of grief, but they summarize the point-of-view that you're looking for extremely well. Go to their best of the decade lists and each individual year's songs and albums lists. Head to Myspace/flash video sites/"acquisition" websites and give yourself an education. After that, move through their other decade lists, which are excellent as well (and much more broadly appealing). They don't do a job of finding foreign stuff, though (though I did learn about The Chills from them). It will take a month or so, but it'll be faster in the long run.

Some favorites from this decade, in some rough order:

!Björk
Joga: http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.artistalbums&artistid=13329024&albumid=8512437
Hyperballad: http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.artistalbums&artistid=13329024&albumid=9902960
Human Behavior: http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.artistalbums&artistid=13329024&albumid=9902141

these songs are from last decade.

As for indie pop, I like Eisley. They have two full-lengths out right now, and their third is in the works. Check out The Fire Kite EP on iTunes, and listen to "Ambulance" and "The Valley." Those are the two newest and are pretty wonderful. "Go Away," "I Could Be There For You," "Ten Cent Blues," and "Combinations" off of Combinations are also some favorites of mine.

I came into this thread with the sole purpose of mentioning this band. I don't even like indie at all, but I have been subjected to this band through the radio at my second job. The vocals are fantastic, almost haunting. The song "Invasion" is quite splendid.

Echoing the earlier mentions of Final Fantasy (Now known as just Owen Pallett) and Stars. Also, Architecture in Helsinki is quite good. Their music makes me think I'm 11 years old again. I liked some of the songs from Passion Pit, and I highly recommend Faraquet (and the follow-up band The Medications).

Alrighty, this is great. I'm going to get dirt poor but I'm really liking all of the recommendations so far.

And they are amazing live! If you ever get the chance to see them, do it. One of my friends only somewhat enjoys their recorded music, but anytime they come through town, she jumps at the chance to go see 'em with me. They're nice, funny, and add intros and such to certain songs. They did an intro for "I Could Be There For You" during the Combinations tour that was fucking fantastic. I wish they'd record it.

Eisley
Ambulance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8ci0RDeKkc
Invasion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKprch2ywJY
Telescope Eyes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3Ofj256SnM
Head Against the Sky (live): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hu0fGv4fU5w

I know there's a bunch of audio you can get of theirs for free at http://www.strangeyellowpatterns.com/. Old recordings and such that the band lets people download freely.

Dismemberment Plan

The Books

Pinback (and their satellite projects like Thingy, Systems Officer)

Black Heart Procession

New Pornographers

Trail of Dead, though they are more rawk I guess. With the exception of the last song, I thought their new album was great, best since Source Tags and Codes.

Vetiver

of Montreal - Gronlandic Edit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBfgQvM7wtE
-This is my favorite indie band and listening to their music got me to be more free with my tastes, they are really catchy and have hooks all over the place.

Animal Collective - The Purpole Bottle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyJjihseiio
-AC can be hard to get into but when/if you do, you might wonder why other people DON'T like them.

Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK2IAyCuJ4U
Seconding what someone said about their album Funeral. I don't think I've heard another album that has such a range in emotion.

Crystal Castles - Black Panther

I saw CC 3 times last year and they were better each time. They've always reminded me of some futuristic Gotham city type group. idunnohaha

I'm not sure that this band is necesarrily "indie", but Vampire Weekend is awesome. Start with Contra, then move backwards.

Really? I thought Contra sucked hard. There's like one good song.

I'm gonna put in a suggestion on the rockier side of things, The Temper Trap. Nice and accessible and from my home town of Melbourne, Australia.

Their biggest song has been Sweet Disposition, but their album has plenty more great songs on it too.

Some favorite MUSICIANS from this decade...

ok, misunderstood.

i'd still say bjork's strongest stuff is definitely last decade, your list tends to agree with this. Volta was pretty awful, save a few songs. while vespertine was pretty good as a whole, it felt like a retread of homogenic in parts. i think it goes without saying that homogenic and post obliterate her new stuff.

The Black Angels:
"Manipulation."
"Young Men Dead"
"Black Grease"
Awesome psych rock/indie band. Check it out, son.

Broadcast are underrated but have a great electronica indie pop-ish sound. High recommendations from the Snug.
"Man is Not a Bird"
"Before We Begin"
"Dave's Dream"

I don't care for Animal Collectives recent music, but I loved the whole Sung Tongs album. Some wild and trippy shit, ideal weed smoking music.
"LEAF HOUSE".
"Kids on a Holiday"
"Winter's Love"

...I can't forget Valley of the Giants.
They only have a single album, from 2004, but it's really good.
"Westworld" gives me the chills every time.
"Bala Bay Inn"
