This. I'm really open minded and love a big avroety of genres, but how someone can enjoy this is beyond me.
to qoute, I think it was hellhammer that gave this answer in an interview (or something like this)

"black metal is like opera, you have to practice listening to it"

true for all kinds of more extreme metal, not only black metal

oh and try this:

Animal Collective (not sure what genre they occupy). I remembering reading the AOTY thread, GAF convinced me the album was the second coming of James Cameron so I figured I'd give it a shot. "Not my thing" -- there was one song from the merriweather album I did like (just the first 2 minutes to be specific). They didn't sound horrible (nor good)...honestly, I couldn't wrap my head around whatever I was listening to.

Safe to assume it's a type indie music sub-genre? I created a station on pandora. Found all of the suggested 'music' unappealing. I guess it's best to simply say there are sub-genres in indie music I don't get.

It's funny that i used to share the same sentiment as you. But nowadays it sounds fairly normal to me.:lol i'm not so sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Me too. I remember the first time I listened to Children of Bodom. I used to think "If there was only a way i could eliminate the vocals and just leave the melody" But the more I listened the more it made sense. So now i can listen to harsh vocals with no problems.

Initially I wanted to say Metal as well, but it would be cheating as I've never even tried my chances with that.

I never got into Dancehall though I really wanted to. It has quite a following here in Berlin and it seems to involve lots of good partying and fun but it never clicked.

Same goes for the whole Balcan Beats thing.

I hated country so much after I moved from the city to Pennsylvania, but after being around it for years I have come to acknowledge that the best of country music is admirable for the soulful stories they tell. There's some real deep stories.

It's not something I listen to, but isn't quite the level of 'vomit-inducing' for me as it used to be.
Yeah I hated country music for a long time, but I realised I just hated the mainstream stuff mostly. It's too broad a genre for me to label with just "country." Some of the alt-country stuff like Neko Case and Bill Callahan (2009's AOTY for me) really hit a chord with me.

Neil Young sort of introduced me to it all. Got into him from grunge, so mostly the Crazy Horse stuff, but the acoustic material is really great.

Besides, what's the line between folk and country? Is Bob Dylan country, or folk?

Holy FUCK. How the...fuck me dude. I want to find people who listen to this and remove them from Earth.

He lives in Florida... But that shouldn't be the surprising part, right?

I didn't mean Rammstein would be death metal. It was just kinda an answer to Amirox's "it's just screaming" comment.

It was more over the "death metal has no melody" comment.

Aw that sucks. I'm not really -into- Jazz, I don't listen to it on my iPod... but it's a weird genre in that I definitely do admire the musicality behind it. There's some incredible Jazz Musicians out there. It's very soothing stuff done right.
I also admit that there's some serious talent in jazz music, but no matter how well you can play the instruments, the (jazz)music is still pure shit IMO.

If the words aren't making sense you're listening to the wrong rappers!

Leaving the Past
One more problem in rap is that I can't even understand half of the words they say, because it's always a huge list of words one after another (English isn't my native language), and the same goes for that example you linked. But watching the video I think I understood some of the message. Still all of it seemed so randomly put together. And did you make it on purpose to link a rap song with some jazz elements in it...? :lol

Happy hardcore.

It really is music for morons.

That's actually pretty damn great music to listen to when drunk or getting drunk!

This is something that cannot be stressed enough when it comes to just about any sort of music.

I used to hate rap because I thought that the drek that spewed from the radio was all there is. That all changed when I was exposed to Lupe Fiasco and all sorts of underground rap groups.

Metal:Too noisy for me.I don't get anything they sing.
Rap:Never liked the sound of it,plus I find the lyrics laughable.

I hear you. Obviously I think there is talent there and some of it even sounds nice and soothing, but it's not an easy genre to get into... especially for modern people.

Hehe it wasn't really intentional but it works :lol

Wow... I just discovered Classical Rap... :lol :lol :lol :lol Interesting I guess. Does not sound really bad though.

I never thought they would mix those two genres...

heh the "beat/melody" is actually hot but they clearly have no rapping talent.

Shame.

This is a better example of that

Bob Dylan is considered folk.

that really depends. he has made both folk and country albums, not to mention rock and fucking gospel rock. the protest songs he's most famous for are folk, though.

but he's everything. <3

Is this a thread where everyone can demonstrate his ignorance? Broad statements like "i hate metal/techno/rap" etc are stupid. Each genre has such a wide spectrum it's hard to not find at least a niche in any of them that will sound good to your ears.

I believe most people refer to very specific sub genres or bands and are clueless what other music there is within the genres.

I loved Sung Tongs, one of their earliest albums, and the EP they did with Vashti Bunyan. They're both much more folky and organic than their last few albums, which I definitely don't "get". I was on the fence with Feels and everything after that just doesn't appeal to me. What I've heard sounds abrasive and obnoxious to me, unlike the otherworldly and infectious Sung Tongs.

If you can find even a single death metal/industrial metal song that is appealing to my ears, I will PAYPAL you $500 dollars.

That's not a fake offer. I will really do that.

Death Metal. I realize I sound like a pensioner saying it, but to me it sounds just...

braagraa grrrr brerrrr gbbbrrerbbbrrrrraaaarrr

that said, Ramstein is pretty good. Not like that at all. It's melodic, bubble gum pop rock.

That's funny because most people usually love their later more accessible stuff like MPP / Strawberry jam, but never get "sung tungs".

If you can't tap yer foot to this little ditty, you have no soul :D

I don't like much rap, but there are a few songs I like enough to see what the point of the genre is.

I think I would be much more interested in metal if it weren't for the vocals, especially cookie monster style death vocals. I know there are many types of metal vocals, and some I do really like, but it seems like most of the very technical bands I read about and want to hear end up with vocals I can't stand. Cynic is the only group with death-style vocals I enjoy, and that's because they mix it up with synth vocals in a unique way.

Anyway, I really don't understand jazz or rap. In jazz, all I usually hear is a drummer and/or pianist who plays a whole different song than the rest of the guys. And that fucking saxophone... makes some annoying shitty sound which is the final nail in the coffing to ruin the music.

Rap is just some guys rhyming whatever words they can think of even if the sentences don't even make any sense. And the beat is almost always the same no matter the artist.

I just YouTubed couple of songs from both genres, like John Coltrane's stuff. Hell even Moonlight Sonata sounded awful as a jazz version. Rap... well yeah... all these Ice Ts, Diamond Dogs and shit. Only Eminem has like couple of listenable tracks, but I don't know if Eminem is really even rap.

This post is interesting to read because I know there exist people who don't like jazz but it's been a mystery to me why.

I have two comments: Moonlight Sonata should be awful in a jazz version. Playing it like a jazz standard is a terrible idea and I don't even want to search youtube to hear what it sounds like. Second, I wonder what you would think of this track

Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby

which in my opinion lacks the aspects that you said bother you about jazz while still being great jazz.

no such thing as a soul etc etc

Yeah definitely not foot tapping involved in this "song." Although it seems pretty much on the edge of the genres I hate, this specific song. It's almost past Industrial Metal to a sort of Techno base Metal.

But yeah I did not dig it.

I promise if you provide a song I like in these genres, I will be completely honest with you about my enjoyment of it and PAYPAL you that $500.

I don't get most rock and metal, especially the awful noisy stuff. I'm an electronica lover since I was like 8 years old, which probably has something to do with it.

Oh, and I don't understand speedcore and how someone can listen to it. That shit's whack.

We Tigers is one of my favorite songs by them. A lot of people who I know love MPP hate Strawberry Jam though even though Strawberry Jam is my favorite.

You have got to be joking :lol

Anyway, the only things close to metal I enjoy listening to are Eagles of Death Metal and Queens of the Stone Age.

I will also never get stuff like Animal Collective, The National, Radiohead,... where the singers sound like they are nagging or crying all the time.

Err he is kinda right. I used to absolutely hate black metal when i first listened to it, but eventually after going through several BM albums. (and finding one i actually liked) the whole genre just sort of clicked for me.

Maybe these? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLfvvvclKoI or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-HaskEIda4. These bands is what got me into the genre anyway. (don't expect you to like them.:P )

First one at least has a sort of heavy metal strumming that isn't so bad, but the vocals completely ruin the shit for me. And the second one is straight up bad, terrible (to my ears) :lol

I'll try to listen to them from start to finish later to see if it impacts me if I actually wait through the entire things, but scanning through them just led me to my dispassionate hatred again :P

I fucking hate Reggae. The music is some of the most boring shit ever.

And I am with the guy who didn't enjoy growls but got used to them. Same happened for me. I went from liking classic Power Metal to loving Death Metal.

Alright, I dare someone to listen to this crap.

Noizefucker vs. Vahg - Annabollen

There is seriously nothing worse than this piece of shit genre. I simply can't grasp how someone would want to press this shit on vinyl, when quality stuff has to struggle just to be released on a digital label.

Same as the OP.

The heavy heavy metal is just noise. I can't find any structure, melody or rhythm in it. It's like placing your radio frequency between two channels. Just...noise.

Edit: also, at a certain point the distinction between rock and other genres just goes away. The "noise" rock I talk about above, has a resemblance to the noise house/techno that is linked in Beedogs post above mine.

My brother listens to it all the time. After many years of enduring it, I just keep hating it more and more.
