Music you discovered from Video Games

Burnout 3 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater maybe?

There was a lot of crap on that burnout 3 soundtrack but a few things I really liked.

oh yeah, Watch Dogs had this

Kinski (post-rock, garage) from Saints Row: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTnttrBcnbk

Have now bought most of their albums (Airs Above Your Station is one of the best albums I've ever heard), and just got the newest album in the mail.

"Drink Up And Be Somebody"
"Bulletin of the International String Figure Association"

The WoW guild Elitist Jerks made a video of them 3-manning (or 4-manning, I can't remember) Onyxia in vanilla WoW. This video single-handedly introduced me to Boards of Canada, 65daysofstatic, The Fall of Troy, Ratatat, On!Air!Library!, Cursive and probably a few more. Not had such a good haul from one video before or since. Other WoW videos introduced me to other things, like Sage Francis and Overseer.

I became a massive fan of Starsailor after playing Metal Gear solid 3: Snake Eater.

Way to fall by Starsailor plays during the ending credits.

They were pretty much the uncoolest band to listen to in the UK at one point, but I always had a soft spot for Starsailor. They haven't released an album in ages so I assume they've split up.

Poets of the Fall. I discovered them while playing Alan Wake. I still listen to The Poet and the Muse. Superb song.

Just to name a few:

Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, M.O.O.N, etc. from Hotline Miami.. 80s synthwave <3

Salty Seas - Devics (The Walking Dead)
Survivasm - Moscow Youth Cult (Saints Row 4)
Iron - Woodkid (AC: Revelations)

80s music from Vice City.

I remember telling my parents that the stuff from the 80s was dinosaur music.

Then Flash FM came and forever my musical tastes were shifted.

GTA's for a fair bit of stuff, but also Street Fighter 2 deserves a mention here, not because the game featured tracks, but because the game made me watch the animated movie, which has a really good soundtrack and made me check out some cool stuff I wouldn't otherwise have heard.

They reunited in 2014 and have been touring since then... but, yeah, I kind of always dismissed them. I think I'll maybe give them more of a listen.

The real dinosaur music is Grand Funk Railroad.

Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades introduced me to Journey. I had heard songs from them before, but I didn't know it was them until I played Any Way You Want It.

Ridge Racer Type 4 introduced me to Drum N Bass. SFEX+@ showed me Acid Jazz. Games will always have a special place in my heart for that.

Shoutouts to Ubisoft (I know, I know) for the ACII and Revelations trailers. Never heard of Justice and Woodkid before then.

EDIT: Can't forget GTA. But listing all of the artists that those games put me on would be pretty damn big. Inc. and Hics are the two that are at the top of my list, currently. Cold Air is so fucking good.

The OP reminds me of one of my favorite pre-order items. The CD soundtrack that came with pre-orders of Fallout 3. It was way too short with only a few (but awesome) songs, but it looked like an old 45 rpm record. I still have it in a box somewhere.

Forza Horizon 2 introduced me to some awesome artists, namely the Hospital Records station in the game.

Some great electronic stuff that I wouldn't have otherwise even heard of.

Hotline Miami 1 and 2 introduced me to a bunch of great musicians. I still haven't fully checked out all the arists yet.

Jazz, blues from Fallout: New Vegas. There's a lot of catchy material there. Catherine introduced me to some classical music I wasn't familiar with, specifically the work of Alexander Borodin.

I'd heard a fair bit of Poets of the Fall before (you couldn't miss Carnival of the Rust in Finnish Radio at the time), but it was Alan Wake that made truly fall in love with the band. Both "Poet and the Muse" and "Balance Slays the Demon" are absolutely brilliant songs.

Never heard of them before Alan Wake but now I have all of their discography.

For me, much of my current musical tastes can be traced back to two games, Tony Hawk 3 and Jet Set Radio Future. From Tony Hawk I learned of Del Tha Funky Homosapien, and from JSRF I learned of Cibo Matto and Jurassic 5. I grabbed their albums, listened to them constantly, and then began to look for similar music to satiate my needs. Today, most of the music I listen to is from a branch from those three artists from those two games.

Obviously, Rock Band introduced me to a TON of stuff. It seems like I downloaded a lot of stuff that was on MLB The Show soundtracks. That's how I found Baroness!

I listened to Starsailor for the first time in Metal Gear Solid 3, then got the full album. Great band.

Also the american punk band "X" thanks to GTAV. I already knew of their existence because I'm a X-Japan fan and I once read that they had to change their name because of this band, but never heard a song by them. Also great old-school punk

Parodius and other titles like Antartic Adventure and Binary Land.

Looking up the music many years later gave me a "Oh, I remember these!" moment and got me to look up other symphonies by the same composers, many of which I still have on my MP3-player playlist now.

Hikaru Utada from Kingdom Hearts

Genki Rockets and Yasuda Rei from Child of Eden (though the game and the band are the brainchild of Tetsuya Mizuguchi). I became obsessed with Genki Rockets for about 2 months and bought every album and CD single I could find of theirs. Plus Mizuguchi is from Hokkaido (where I lived for 2 years) and speaks English, which makes him double-awesome in my book.

I listened to and gained a huge appreciation for Ennio Morricone after finding out that the Wild Arms 1 soundtrack was an homage to his work. EDIT: Also because of Metal Gear/Nicola and Bart

It was either Dead Kennedys or Bad Religion that I first heard as a child via THPS. I can't remember which (probably because they've both been featured in the games).

Panjabi MC from Far Cry 4. The song when you destroy the chemical lab. It's called, "Jogi". Great song and perfect fit for the game.
