"Must Have" Anime Classics on Bluray?

Is this [Riding Bean] good? Seems a bit costly for a pretty short ova.

The transfer is amazing. It looks absolutely beautiful and right up there with Animeigo's bluray set for Bubblegum Crisis. Totally worth it (especially if you enjoyed Baby Driver earlier this summer)!

As someone who went from the AnimEigo LaserDisc to the new Blu-Ray, it's a huge improvement. I enjoy the more violent movies more than most, so I really dig it. There is some mild sexual content, but nothing pervy if memory serves. There are some nice special features like an art book and features on disc if you like that kind of stuff. Not sure if they'll do a reduced cost version, but worth keeping an eye out.

Wonder who has the license for Perfect Blue in the US... I would pay $40-50 easy if it had the dub and a good transfer. One of my favorite movies. Too bad the DVD looks mediocre.

It's only $7 on Amazon. It's worth it.

You also need to own GitS 2.0 for the behind the scenes features. The steelbook version you have doesn't come with any of that.

My must own anime classics are probably

1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Full Metal Alchemist (both storylines)
3. Record of Lodoss War.

Everything else I would recommend probably isn't a classic or it's a Shonen.

Any hand drawn movies from the 80s-early 90s.

Patlabor 1 and 2, Akira, Royal Space Force Wings of Honneamise, Venus Wars

Basically the pinnacle of when anime was so meticulously drawn that they still look better than most things now.

Lupin The 3rd: The Castle Of Cagliostro
Patlabor The Movie
Patlabor 2 The Movie
Jin-Roh
Escaflowne (both the TV series and the Movie are great on BD)

If you have all of these on your shelf you are guaranteed to be seen as a person of culture and taste, with an eye for visual fidelity to boot.

Oh and

BUY ROYAL SPACE FORCE

hogendaz knows what's up

If i remember correctly there was a Bubblegum Crisis Blu kickstarter. That'd be a good one as well. Really anything from the 80's through early 00's is game. The attention to detail, to sale an environment was on point.

For Princess Mononoke wait for the GKids release in a few months.

Curious to know what's the difference between the Disney release and the Gkids release?

What is the Gkids release of Princess Mononoke? How will the bluray look and will it have better features than the bluray release that's out right now?

Information about their Blu-Ray releases here.
https://twitter.com/GKIDSfilms/status/887123895043719169

GKids generally cares more about getting people the best experiences possible, staying true to what the subtitles should be, etc.

They care a bunch more than Disney does. Plus then need (and deserve, IMO) your money a lot more than Disney does.

Regarding Riding Bean:

Is this good? Seems a bit costly for a pretty short ova.

Riding Bean is a hoot: 46 minutes of car chases and cheerfully violent mayhem. I think all three of the recent AnimEigo Blu-ray releases (along with Otaku no Video and the sadly out-of-print Bubblegum Crisis) are top notch and well worth the extra scratch: you're getting classics of 80s anime lovingly restored. Riding Bean is, admittedly, kinda stiff, but just think of it as a throwback to the laserdisc era - except still a total bargain (relatively speaking).

Other classics to buy ASAP:

Arcadia of my Youth - The Captain Harlock feature film is not what you would call fast paced, but it is what you would call an epic achievement in melodramatic manliness. I love this movie too much to do much beyond incoherently gush about how great it is, so hopefully the theatrical trailer will help convey its power, even without subtitles.

Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro - One of the most purely entertaining anime flicks ever made, this caper has it all: adventure, romance, poignant moments, and full on zany hijinx. My vote for the best Ghibli film Miyazaki ever made is Porco Rosso - but this might be his best film, period. It's the anime film you can show to people who don't give a shit about anime and they'll still like it.

The Wings of Honneamise - The uber-fanboys at Gainax went all out with their first feature film, putting out a gorgeous looking art film (complete with inexplicable sexual assault sequence) about an alternate universe's attempts at manned space flight. It's an astonishing achivement. Then, it lost a ton of money, and they saved the company by putting out Gunbuster and learning a valuable lesson: When in doubt, shamelessly pander. That's a lot of fun, but it's a shame they didn't make a ton of money on Honneamise and just make damn fine movies instead. While you're on a Gainax kick, be sure to snag Nadia as well; just remember to skim through the Island episodes and you'll be fine.

Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories - You can get by barely knowing anything about Gundam whatsoever and still appreciate the two-fisted badassery of 0083. Gundamjacking! Non-stop mecha combat! Mio belting out "Men Of Destiny" at maximum volume! Yes, yes, yes! There's plenty of other great Gundam releases to grab on Blu-ray - The Movie Trilogy and 08th MS Team, for example - but if you have only one Gundam release on Blu-ray, make sure it's 0083.

And, last but not least, speaking of giant robots, I second the recommendation for Patlabor. All of Patlabor. Movie 1 and 2, plus the OVA series. The four TV volumes, plus the New Files OVAs. Hell, even Wasted XIII. Patlabor completely rules and it's a wonderful miracle that the whole shebang got a terrific US Blu-ray release. If nothing else, I'd encourage folks to pick up the first movie and give it a shot.

FnordChan, wondering when in the hell the US is going to get Giant Robo on Blu-ray

What about the dubs?

Edit: Seems like this release is only important if you care about subs.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. Oh. Wait.
will someone please convince khara to license it again

I'll toss in some favourites, but exclude anything from Aniplex or is OOP (Darker Than Black and Fullmetal Alchemist)

Cowboy Bebop
FLCL
Eden of the East
Wolf Children
Redline
Serial Experiments Lain
Samurai Champloo
Toradora
Ping Pong
Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Anything Ghibli, except Ocean Waves

I don't think you could go wrong with any of these as 'must haves'. I've got a ton of 'lesser' titles too

Ok, thanks for the recommendation, I'll look into Riding Bean.

I just checked out a trailer and this has great animation! Why have I not heard of this one before?!

real subtitles over dubtitles in the disney releases
Great, now I feel like a tool for owning all those disney ghibli blus :(

From a different thread:
Some lesser know ones that are still fantastic:

Space Dandy, it starts out crude but soon jumps into deep meaning and gets very experimental with its visual style.

I really hope it leads to a Gunsmith Cats Bluray.

Sadly they just sold the last of their print run I think.

I'm honestly not the biggest fan of Cowboy Bebop. It's pretty good but I'm not enamored with it.

Personally, I'd like them to release Trigun, Blue Gender, Samurai Jack, Paranoid Agent and the original Evangelion series on bluray. They're all still DVD only.

I didn't even know there was a dub before the Disney dub.

Yeah: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service all got dubbed by Streamline prior to Studio Ghibli making the deal for Disney to localize and distribute their films. Disney eventually redubbed those movies.

studio ghibli collection

and

Neon Genesis 1.11 and 2.22

3.33 is up to you whether you like it or not. I loved it, mostly everyone hated it

Regarding the BGC Blu-ray release:

It looks like Bob Woodhead found a few extra copies of the premium Blu-ray set for Bubblegum Crisis recently and will be putting them up for sale in early August. It's $110, which is pretty stiff, but for anyone kicking themselves for missing this release it's your chance to own a 80s cyberpunk classic!

FnordChan

Sweet I know he was talking on twitter about finding a box but I didn't follow up on it.

Edit: Looking through my stuff Patlabor is an awesome set to get but you might want to read a wiki on what order to buy and watch things in as it gets a bit tricky.

Also Slayers is a good time. Sadly the 1-3 seasons are dvd only and apparently the originals were damaged so they will probably only ever be DVD. However the OVA's and Seasons 4 and 5 are all bluray.

Magic Knights Rayearth
Ghost in the Shell :SAC
Death Note
Hellsing
FMA
Vampire Hunter D
GitS
Akira of course

Damn shame

Perfect Blue and Gundam Win Endless Waltz were the first movies i ever bought on DVD with my own money.

Super weird, because Endless Waltz was my first also lol. I saved up so much because the only place that had it was a mall electronics store and it was $39.99- which was a massive ripoff in hindsight.

Luckily stumbled across Perfect Blue in a used book store for 8 bucks, goes for really high now. Perfect Blue and Kon's other works are my wish list for Bluray.

That's a god damn travesty.

No joke. Really sucks because I haven't seen Paranoia Agent since the Adult Swim run.

Ugghhhh well now I want to buy it.

Had seen nothing about the blu ray so I took a gamble (review of the quality I mean- probably because it's sorta niche). Really satisfied. It's very clean. Probably similar to Steins;Gate level

Street Fighter: The Animated Movie (Collector's Edition) is pretty awesome. Great picture quality and a multitude of audio options. One of the best Blu-Rays I have!
