Must-play PC games for a life-long console gamer

infinityBCRT said:
nah, I'd recommend everyone to stay away from MMOs. (I assume) this guy is looking for games which defined PC gaming. MMOs are time sinks and the only MMOs which really were considered "the best" were Ultima Online, Everquest and WoW. And UO and EQ probably aren't the same as they were 10 years ago, so only WoW would be worth checking out. But I'd rather play Oblivion (a game with an ENDING) than WoW IMO.
guildwars is not an mmo.

someone mentioned Knytt Stories, but the OP never responded.

answer: play Knytt Stories or your life is forfeit.

Who ever mentioned Undying is a good person. Great horror game in all the places that matter. Probably the best FP horror game outside of SS2 and Condemned.

Must play PC games:

Civilization IV (though Civ Rev will do just fine on consoles)
Broken Sword
Fallout 2
yada yada yada...

aw fuck it...

Just go ahead and buy all the Blizzard battle chests, and die happy.

Also get a fucking steam account, their weekend deals are not to be missed.

I still need to play that, I remember the demo freaking me out...

Two plus pages and not even a mention of Thief? Go find Thief.

Doesn't hold up well.

Also, a preemptive Vampire isn't as good as most people love to think.

It is if you overlook the last third (or so) of the game. :P

Bloodlines? Hell its good all the way up to the last hour or so. And that game is constantly improving.

A Malk run in that game is worth several other games combined

Max Payne 2 -Download the Cinema Mod 2.0!!-
Grim Fandango
Unreal Tournament 2004
Company Of Heroes
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Anything from Valve

I started to loose interest somewhere around that buggy werewolf fight... not sure exactly at what percentage of the game that was. Though I may just be overly cynical after having gone through the chinawarrior-respawn-segment, which was awful. Oh and the "fish-boss".

I really love the game, but some parts just drag it way down.

play the thief games. all three of them. fuck anyone who speaks ill of the pinnacle of sneaky shit. The second one is my favorite, but then again I haven't played the third one yet. (Along with Dawn of War 2 it sits at the top of my list once I get a capable computer)

Whats the cinema mod do?

  • Gives Max and Mona a new skin.
  • Adds some weapons.
  • Tweaks balance.
  • Makes ragdolls behave more natural.
  • You can make the slow-mo dodges while on bullet time mode and it won't interrupt the bullet time.
  • Makes the game more bullet time centric.
  • Adds a Gatling Gun!!
  • Bullet time now has "move like" background music, instead of listening to your hearthbeat. Some of them are really good and add to the atmosphere, and some others I just plain skip them.
  • Guns now do realistic damage.
  • When firing a rifle in bullet time mode, the camera does a really cool travel motion along the bullet.
And many more things. Those are the ones I remember from the top of my head.
More info here.

Just get Steam and get the Valve Complete pack. The best $100 you'll ever spend.

Werewolf was easy, especially if you have super speed. And you found the fish boss hard?

According to guildwars.com it is :D

false advertising!

Just to be clear-- does Guild Wars have an ending? Or is it endless levelling up?
The level cap is 20. You reach it very quickly. Then there are 4 different campaigns you can get, with cutscenes, sidequests and a TON of other content.

The game is really about picking the right skillset for the task at hand rather than grinding endlessly.

I don't know why people are suggesting Diablo 2 or the catch-all 'Blizzard games' when we all know he'll buy Diablo 2 and disappear for two years. Damn game is as destructive to life as WoW.

Exactly. Buy Planescape instead

Although Myst hasn't aged particularly well, Riven, Myst III, and Myst IV have all aged pretty well...especially Myst IV.

They're great games, with some of the most ingenious puzzles ever, but they're ridiculously hard...apart from Myst III, which is far easier and works with far more elementary concepts and isolated puzzles. If you want to start, go with Myst III...it's a weaker title, but the difficulty shouldn't completely put you off. You can probably find the anniversary pack with Myst, Riven, and Myst III for $10 or less. Same goes with Myst IV. If you do play them, Riven should be last, since it's incredibly, incredibly difficult.

I still suggest Diablo rather than Diablo II. At the VERY least, play Diablo first so you can enjoy the amazing awesome that is the first game. I still greatly prefer the first game for atmosphere/etc. Diablo II added too much color/etc to the series. Diablo III looks to do the same. But I love all Diablo and I'll probably still love Diablo III, even if it looks like WoW influenced garbage.

Well yeah the werewolf was easy, since he got stuck in a doorway. It just didn't feel as "impressive" for me as I think they intended. :P

As for the fish boss, I don't remember which char I used... it was either a Malk with guns or a mage type... and one of them had to chip away very small amounts of health each time he popped up. Not hard, but tedious. And I don't think there was any way to get around the fight other than killing him, was there?

And pick up KotOR II if they ever finish that restoration mod. Those guys are holding up the whole mod community for that game.

That is one serious list. Easily the best in this thread, well, outside of mine of course :P

Its missing Sacrifice, Ultima VII and Red Orchestra.

And Sanitarium.

And Arcanum cause Evilore cant deal with the interface even though he'd adore the C&C.

Ultima VII I can't deal with the straight down perspective, doesn't work for me. I had some hope with the procedural 3d engine some guy was making for Exult, but haven't heard about that in a good while.

Red Orchestra I have enjoyed here and there, but it's a little rough around the edges for me. High hopes for the sequel.

I might give it another shot with that recent interface mod, at some point.

Completely agree. Diablo had a atmosphere and a sense of place that was lost to me in Diablo2, maybe due to the traveling and all the different locations, but I think the coloring and the daytime above-ground sequences removed the unnerving element that made Diablo so great.

I remember, in Diablo, after you'd taken the mission to avenge the search party and kill the butcher you could talk to Farnham the Drunkard, and his little speech about the terrifying Butcher was fantastic.

Dont forget the high resolution mod. Its a very pretty game at points, like the Infinity Engine and Fallout games

Before Diablo came out, the last big RPG I played fully was UVII, so when I played Diablo for a few hours I was like "cool; can't wait to see what the rest of the world is like!" lol

Railroad Tycoon - sounds boring as hell, but it is a very deep strategy game, which becomes increasingly addictive.
And while doing a quick search for railroad tycoon I found that:
1) Railroad tycoon can be downloaded for free
and
2) There is a sequel/re-imagining coming out in october
http://www.2kgames.com/railroads/railroads.html

I am also going to recommend Quake 2 with the action quake mod because it was the most fun I have had gaming ever. You can still find the odd server still running it as well although finding a friendly populated server is pretty tough, and finding all the custom maps models and sounds is extremely difficult.

Don't listen to the Planescape Torment and X-Com recommendations. They are horrible games.

But you should probably try them out to judge for yourself.

Absolutely. That, and putting everything inside one giant dungeon was just more interesting to me.

This is either great sarcasm or massive tragedy in the making.
