Must watch British Tv "Comedies"?

I've only even seen the episode included in the old TYO dvd set. Did it ever get its own full release?

It did briefly on the BBC classics dvd releases. I think it was re-released later after Rik died though so should be able to find it on amazon or ebay. To this day I can't go for an Indian without bursting through the curry house doors shouting 'Poppadom frenzy!'.

If OP likes Rik Mayall, track down the Comic Strip Presents box set. Many many hours of entertainment. And The New Statesman is often overlooked. If you want to trawl Youtube, you can find some old Dangerous Brothers clips too.

Given the Iannucci-heaviness of the listed set, no The Friday/Saturday Night Armistice?

There's also the fine British line of panel shows. QI, Would I Lie To You and (recently) Taskmaster have been must-watches for me. Have I Got News For You deserves mention, too, but I don't really regard it as essential viewing any more.

Everybody up!
If you know what countdown is then 8 out of 10 cats does countdown is pretty damn funny. I'm not sure if it would work if you have never watched countdown with your mates instead of going to an organic chemistry lecture though.

And Kevin Turvey.

Not much to add in terms of shows.

But also worth noting that some of the best comedy on British TV comes from comedy panel shows like mock the week and 8 out of 10 cats.

Coupling - Has one of the best comedy characters in tv history with Jeff.

Green Wing - Funny show about all the departments in a hospital.

I wish I was more attractive, like Dagless.

Yeah what the heck happened there?

The change in format didn't help. I know they were trying to take the piss out of Tomorrows World but it just wasn't a good idea for a half hour program. Some bits were good but most of it was just boring. Pity really as they had some really great people on it (Simon Pegg, Kevin Eldon, Mark Heap).

I used to love Nevermind The Buzzcocks. Kinda fell off it when Bill Bailey left though.
I've only seen a few of the newer episodes without him and I can see what you mean. I do like Noel Fielding though. I started back at the beginning and watched up to series 12 so far.

Also, Phil Jupitus is hilarious. I'm really surprised I've never seen him in anything else before.

FTFY

All excellent choices - not seen The The Wrong Mans though?

Hah thanks - somehow managed to get a political comedy film and Pendulum mixed up >_>

James Corden and Mathew Baynton get mixed up in a load of conspiracies and kidnappings. It's a good laugh, bit different to the others I recommended though. 10 episodes I think?

A Fistful of Traveller's Cheques will always hold a special place in my heart.

As many have said, Peep Show for sure. Fantastic show. I'd recommend Red Dwarf too, one of my favourite classics. I'll also throw votes in for Bottom, One Foot in The Grave and the lesser known Brittas Empire.

Try and watch Phil Jupitus' stand up if you can find it (if you haven't already). Some shorter bits may be on the Comedy Store show that was on Paramount/Comedy Central

and the lesser known Brittas Empire.

Yesss! my man

That's a great episode. Bad News/More Bad News, 5 Go Mad In Dorset, Mr Jolly Lives Next Door, Four Men in a Car and Gregory: Diary of a Nutcase are my favorites. I can't choose just one.

Most people nailed all my suggestions. If you have Netflix and three hours to waste, the six episodes of Scrotal Recall aren't terrible.

Absolutely

not sure how good the US selection is, but Netflix in the UK has a bunch of these - perhaps one tiny example where you might want a DNS changer to pretend you're in the UK?

- Mighty Boosh
- that mitchell and webb look
- I'm alan partridge
- Extras
- The office
- The thick of it
- The trip
- red dwarf
- blackadder (only two seasons though)
- bottom

Amazon prime has
- spaced
- The IT crowd
- Father Ted

hmm - I think one of them used to have black books but not at the moment it seems.

Only Fools & Horses (can give the specials a miss)
Fawlty Towers
Blackadder (series 3 and 4, maybe 2)
The Mighty Boosh (series 1 and 2)
Knowing Me, Knowing You With Alan Partridge
I'm Alan Partridge
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
The Office
Nathan Barley
Extras
Bottom
Brass Eye
Father Ted (I know)
Still Game (accents may be difficult to comprehend)
Bo Selecta (series 1 and 2)
Monkey Dust
The IT Crowd
Look Around You
The Thick Of It
Peep Show (first 4 series or so are genius, in a massive decline though imo)

Coupling is the best sitcom about relationships ever made. Except Season 4. Season 4 is garbage (the best character, Jeff, left the show after Season 3 and was replaced by one of the worst characters in television history). Anyway, think Friends but with way more sex jokes.

A show I'm disappointed hasn't gotten more love is Scrotal Recall (probably because of the awful name). It's a Netflix co-production with some British company and is very funny. The main character gets an STD and has to contact past girlfriends, which leads to flashbacks that explain the present day plot. Ends on a cliffhanger and I have no idea if there's going to be a S2, so if that's a turn off you should probably avoid. Brilliant show regardless.

Great thing about British television is that they don't have the 22 episode/season requirement, which leads to less filler. I find filler to be incredibly detrimental to comedy, so it's a boon in that regard.

Only one season so far, but Scrotal Recall

Beat me to it.

While never stepping foot on British soil, I consider myself British at heart. I enjoy just about every show mentioned in this thread.

I only skimmed, so I may have missed it, but let me give a vote to Keeping up Appearances.[EDIT] Beaten by seconds.

It's a bit older, and it takes a few episodes to really appreciate, but it is quite good. Maybe not Father Ted level, but what is?

Not sure how they'd hold up today but:

Young Ones
Not the Nine O'Clock News
Spitting Image

Were pretty seminal in their time.

One series of six episodes, one followup Christmas miniseries that's officially four episodes but when it was broadcast the episodes were broadcast in pairs, so it was two hour-long broadcasts.

I think the thing I really liked about The Wrong Mans was the fact that while it was a comedy through-and-through, it genuinely worked great as a thriller as well.

Just noticed that we haven't mentioned A Touch Of Cloth.

A Touch Of Cloth.

Crime procedural parody very much in the Airplane! mould.

The Thick of It, Malcolm Tucker (played by Peter Capaldi, for those that watch Dr. Who, the current Doctor) has consistent amazing lines/insults.

Welp, goddamn guys, this is gonna take me a while lol

Btw no Netflix yet, it's coming to Italy like next week, but it's still uknown whether the catalugue will be up to standerd or not, but i'll give it a try for sure

In the meantime i'm grabbing some off Amazon as soon as i go through the suggestions tonight after work

Ok, I am definitely interested in Bad Education.

Yup, do it

Needs more votes.

Went downhill a bit after Jeff left, but still good.

Actually, ryseing said it better:
