My 3DS XL feels like "the Nintendo/Atlus handheld".

Yeah I never really noticed it before but it's true.

And then I look at what is coming out first half this year and it's all first party Nintendo stuff or Atlus stuff that I'm buying.

Nope, love it. Great dungeons complemented by great music.

It doesn't completely have the Persona feel to it because of the lack of day-to-day city living and the fact some characters I really liked (Teddie and Akihiko mostly) were much, much worse in Persona Q (as in they keep repeating the same thing over and over), but that's pretty it as far as complaints go for me.

The game is fun, funny and looks as great as a Persona game could have on 3DS. The art-style can be a bit jarring at first coming from other Persona games but you get used to it quick and the characters' animations are better than ever.
 
Definitely feel the same. I had not used my 3ds since I finished bravely default until Mon hun camw out cuz I don't like most nintendo games

I still need to restart Bravely Default, but you're seriously doing something wrong if you're grinding in an Atlus game. I'd even call the 3DS Etrians anti-grinding games, considering it sometimes makes sense to level down to avoid grinding.

Monster Hunter is totally a grind, though, and I can see why it would be off-putting to some people.
 
For me it's Nintendo, Level-5, Square Enix, Capcom, Sega and Atlus. Also some indies and some other miscellaneous stuff (ie VLR and soon Rodea). Feel like I'm forgetting something else too... Still, I love my 3DS. It's a fantastic handheld.

Right now I'm playing Untold 1. I'm at the second boss and he's literally kicking my ass. I didn't know what to do and now I'm grinding like hell. I've played all four previous games and wasted tens of hours grinding in those because bosses were seriously overpowered.

Which boss is that again, and are you playing in story or classic mode?
 
Same here OP, all the games I own for my 3DS are Atlus. I wouldn't even OWN one at this point if it wasn't for them.

I own ONE non-Atlus game and that is the Ghost Recon SRPG game hah. (That I never finished)

I don't think Nintendo games are bad, they just don't appeal to me anymore; but sign me up for a new 2D Metroid though.
 
I don't see this as a bad thing personally. The only non-Nintendo/Atlus game that I have for my new 3DS XL is Kingdom Hearts:DDD and Rhythm Thief. I'm just glad that both Nintendo and Atlus (especially Nintendo) develop such great games for the 3DS platform. It's not like there's a shortage of games from either developer on the console.

Capcom: Phoenix Wright Trilogy, Phoenix Wright DD, Layton vs Ace Attorney (fuck you I'm counting it), Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Atlus: SMT IV, Devil Survivor Overclocked, Persona Q

Yes. I still think Nintendo are underrated. The breadth of software they created for their system is staggering. The 3DS was a hell of an accomplishment, both the hardware and the software. But when Ninty went into beast mode in 2013 (which mustve been a release of momentum built from the time of the system's launch) they just unleashed a barrage of GOAT material. I was quite pleased. I'm sure they all work incredibly hard and are incredibly passionate, I wish other developrs cared about videogames as much, and not so much the business side of things. Atlus are right there in the same veign.

Side note: And we're talking they even went so far as to try to "go to another dimension" with 3D, and made a ton of titles that actually took advantage of it, unlike Microsoft and the Kinect. 3D turned out to be a very sensible evolution of games, a precursor to VR, wheras the kinect, turned out to be the gimmick. It was also a precursor but did not deliver anything because we didn't see the software output like we did with Nintendo. Atlus on the other hand just used 3D aesthetically to compliment their already visually sophisticated and very good gaames
 
I have a few Atlus games, but also alot of others from XSEED, Capcom, Square Enix, etc.

I only have 1 Nintendo game lol. I mainly bought my 3DS for its third party library.

That's probably because she is overpowered for your party. If you're calling her the second boss, then it's definitely way too early to fight her. I think I beat her in the late 40s/early 50s. The Etrian team sometimes like to throw ridiculous optional bosses early in the game, partly to mess with players, and partly because they know some fans will be crazy enough to find out how to beat them at that point in the game. Same with the FOEs, to a less extreme extent.

Also, are you sure it's Alraune? I'm pretty sure the path to that part of the second stratum starts in the third one, which is definitely past the second boss. The enemies on that path specifically are way stronger than the ones everywhere else, too, which should've been a sign to turn back.

How is this possible with a portfolio as broad as Nintendo's as a publisher (and heck, even developer)? What exactly doesn't appeal to you about each of their (very different) games? Where do you see that overarching factor that is putting you off of games like Fire Emblem Awakening, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, the Monster Hunter games, the Layton games including Layton vs. Ace Attorney, Bravely Default, The Zelda games, Smash Bros., Kid Icarus, Pilotwings, Pokémon (all of which are either developed or published by Nintendo in the West)? I'm genuinely curious.
 
I enjoyed Persona 4 on my Vita very much. What game from Atlus on Nintendo 3DS comes close to that game's overall design? I've noticed many Atlus games on the eshop look like different, with a dungeon crawler combat aesthetic. What's the best Atlus game that I should give a shot?
 
For me, it is practically the VLR machine. Haven't played with my OG 3DS proper for months, but that's because my money goes to other things before I can save up for a 3DS game (which I frankly find a bit expensive).
 
Yeah, now that you mention it that's pretty much true.

I really feel that a bunch of publishers have left a lot of money on the table this handheld gen.

Most of the mobile gaming market has moved to iOS/Android, where the profits dwarf 3DS sales. Ignoring the really top games, even the middle tier ones can make more money in a month than a year of 3DS game sales. For example back in 2012 (when I dabbled it in) 10k active users a day generated $500 usd per day just from advertising on free iOS games, and some games have hundreds of thousands or more users per day.

For the indie market I imagine its not too easy to get into it, you need custom development kits, porting your game from PC to a whole new platform, and probably have to try and figure out how to publish with Nintendo which can't be too easy. Not to mention I don't think Nintendo still has put out a real web store for games, so they have to curate pretty tightly their eshop so it doesn't become unwieldy on the console.

Persona is its own beast. You're going to have a hard time finding anything really matching the design and quality. Conception 2 is probably the closest thing in design, but it is also on Vita and seemed to be awful from what I saw.

If I were you, I would look into SMTIV. I think that will be the most comfortable follow up.

If you're okay with trying a dungeon crawler, Etrian Odyssey IV or Persona Q are great places to start. Devil Survivor Overclocked is also a great game, but is more of an SRPG with a small-scale apocalyptic storyline.

There's definitely wads of cash to be made on mobile, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that Monster Hunter, Youkai Watch, Persona, and hell even the DQVII remake show that there are still wads of cash to be had by third parties on dedicated handhelds.

Welllllllllllllll I mean there's Capcom there as well with MonHun and some other stuff, however I see where you're coming from.

I'm more Atlus with some odd Nintendo games (Fire Emblem and Pokemon), outsides of those two, nothing really interest me on the 3DS.
 
I'm like that with a couple machines. My PS4 and last gen my 360 got a more varied library with western, eastern, and indies. But my ps3 is basically a jrpg machine, and my 3DS is the same as you, with a little capcom and I guess level 5 sprinkled around.
 
Yeah, the 3DS's library is super lacking compared to the DS's... Mines basically 90% Nintendo games, compared to my DS which was like 90% random 3rd party games.

Such an unworthy successor.
 
Mine's like half Nintendo, half third parties. Actually don't have very many Atlus games :P

And just looking at the games I'll be getting in the future, I think this ratio will continue haha.
