My AVG is using +500 MB of memory! Alternatives?

Get Linux ( Ubuntu is the easiest to get into ), dual boot your system, use Linux for everything but gaming ( for now ). You don't even need anti-virus then.

I had 12 workspaces up, running every Word/Excel/Powerpoint type of software, had a movie playing, then Youtube videos playing, then 5x system monitoring software via terminal ( htop, gnome-system-monitor, psensor, etc. ), regular browser surfing, etc. etc. all at once and only hit 45% CPU load and 1.5GB of RAM usage.

Plenty of AV out there though for Windows. I just find it frustrating to have to spend resources on it. So I don't.

I'll hazard a guess on that something strange is going on with your install. My AVG runs at about 60 MB combined at the moment. Of course if it's a recurring problem I'd not blame anybody for switching.

Regarding MSE or Windows Defender, the latest test results I saw recommended against it.

This kind of information is useless to the OP considering your hardware setup and choice of browser is most likely different from his.

Microsoft Security Essentials

It's free, no bullshit popups ever, no noticeable hit to performance and it's helped stop a few pieces of malware that tried to get onto my machine. Sometimes I forget it's even running, which is honestly the best compliment you can give to software that's supposed to run in the background. If it wasn't for the few times that it's warned me about some malware, I would never know it's there.

If you're on Win8 or 8.1, it's a part of the OS now so you don't even need to install anything.

Definitely second this, macs dont get viruses because of how Apple specifically built the hardware.

lolwut

1: apple does not build the hardware, unless you consider that apple logo to deflect viruses
2: virus protection comes from the software, which is BSD-based, which was developed by Berkeley decades ago
3: macs do get viruses

This kind of information is useless to the OP considering your hardware setup and choice of browser is most likely different from his.

1: choice of browser has a negligible performance difference
2: what are you implying? the fact that linux is the most hardware-compatible OS in the world means that his hardware choice shouldn't matter, and the fact that linux is lightweight means OP can likely replicate his results.

I use MSE and just safe browsing.

MSE has always worked fine for me, though my mother has gotten some nasty stuff on her laptop despite having it on there. So don't open weird email attachments or install whatever you're asked to, regardless.

Where do you get this nonsense information from?

Am I the only one that uses Avira? =(

I just switched to avira, AVG kept pushing that toolbar shit on me. I used avast, but i hated the interface, avira seems nice and simple so far.

Stupid question, but how the heck do I turn on Windows Defender? I just bought a new laptop (HP, ick I know, but it was cheap) and it had some stupid trial of Norton that I got rid of, but Windows Defender does not seem to want to take up the slack. I've tried to manually start it, set it to automatically start, but nothing works. Any time I try to start it, it says "Windows Defender Service service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services and programs." Every site I've looked at basically says I should just need to turn off/uninstall Norton, which I have.

1. Chrome heavily uses CPU compared to other browsers. For you to say its negligible is, well, stupid. OP clearly states that his AV uses 500k or more memory. Chrome can use more than that on normal multi-tab browsing.
2. Hardware, such has GPU, CPU and memory. Obviously if that guy had all those things up and was "only" using 46% of cpu resources, what does that matter if hes running on a 3770k vs something less intense like a i750? That's my point.

I used to use Avira before MSE came out but MSE is so discreet, no BS that I could never go back to anti-virus that has popups and bugs you all the time

So another vote for MSE + malwarebytes for me

As an IT professional who has used many of these products, I would absolutely recommend Avast for free home virus scanning software. It's VERY light weight and works extremely well. It even has a "gamer" mode you can enable when your gaming. :)

I have used AVG for years - in fact I've been using the paid version since 2008.

Scared to change, since I've never had anything go wrong before. I also have Malwarebytes installed, of course.

Didn't MSE fail a 2012 virus detection test? I think we even had a thread for that.

I switched to Avast+Malwarbytes earlier this year, and all is good.

I just installed Windows 8 and am debating between Avira and Avast. Which do people recommend, also do people tend to turn on the real-time monitoring on these things? Obviously, I'm not some layman computer user so I doubt I need it, but just wondering if anyone found those handy or not - I'd really hate to be nagged to death by one of these things.
