My biggest issue with JRPGs since the 90s....

I don't think TMS really fits here, since outfits are separate from defense equipment, although there are many outfits even without DLC unlike other recent games.

Having costumes be separate from armor is better anyway, that way you can wear what you want without having it tied to armor which may be outclassed later on.

Good because I HATE that. Nothing annoys me more then when my character looks like he felt through a medieval thrift store because that's the best combination of stat stuff I have lying around. If there is an option for a locked default costume I always do it.

This issue is fixed in many of the WRPGs with the addition of appearance tabs. Especially MMOs. Diablo 3 does this too.

I've had plenty of issues with the genre since the 90s (more the 00s and beyond) but I can't say that yours is one of them. It's such a minor detail.

That's because i love these games don't get me wrong. But you can't change your looks like you usually can WRGP is one of issues. But other than that JRPG is one of my favorite genres don't get me wrong. FFVII is my all time favorite game.

Why would this be a troll post? Playing dress-up is a big part of any RPG. Why you think MMOs are so popular? also its 20+ years :P

I think MMOs are popular because people can socialize with other people without being stuck with the same 4 dudes they used to play D&D with. They also expand a usually-single player console experience into something way bigger.
I know my main reason for getting into Ultima Online definitely wasn't "ooh, look at all those different-colored robes!!"

and 1999 counts as part of the 90s.

I really dislike individual armor pieces with stats showing up on the character like Xenoblade. Only time I like it is in games like Dark Souls where I don't really care about the character's story/cutscenes.
I prefer costume system like in the Resonance of Fate OP mentioned. Also giving us an option to turn it off for the cutscenes.

Legend of Legaia did it: weapon, arm wear, leg wear, chest and head gear... all interchangeable and each one changing the character models of the 3 main heroes.

Goddammit why'd you have to remind me how good this game is? It's goddamn criminal that this hasn't been rereleased in any digital format. Fuck this game was amazing! It was truly ahead of its time in many ways, this being just one of several.

I kinda prefer armor/weapons not affecting appearance so much. I kinda hate when I have to upgrade equipment to something that looks so much worse than what I had prior.

As for being the character? that's the reason I don't do WRPGs. I'd rather follow someone else's narrative and witness their own struggles/interactions than my own. I think that's just up to personal taste. It's kind of the reason I find even the best WRPGs to be such a dull experience.

The Last Story had a cool system for this.

There are multiple armors you can get in the game.

They are more like base outfits though. At level 1 they are pretty minimal. But as you upgrade them you unlock more parts of the outfit, and you can turn on/off parts you want/don't want and change the colours as well.

Weapons also change appearance as you upgrade them.

i agree on the armor and clothing part, some of the clothes in JRPGs are downright embarrassing.

However, i do like the linear structure of their story. it has a beginning, a middle, and an end. it doesnt force you into making decisions that have extremely minor impact on the story. A good, well thoughtout story is all i need and that's wat most JRPGs offer. Heck, even FFXV had a better story than most recent WRPGs (except Horizon and Witcher).

I'm fine with the characters if they're at least decent like this

But not if they're ugly as heck like this

Or as ridiculous as this

Gah, put these things in spoilers next time. My stomach was barely able to take it.

As for OP, I don't really care. And having a choice between the two doesn't seem to be too bad. Some games just care about equipment and such more than others do.

Curious which ones? I haven't played Many handheld JRPGs but i can't recall many having in the home consoles.
Off the top of my head, SMTIV/ Apocalypse on 3DS has your armour change depending on what you've equipped, but the majority of the portable jrpgs that I've played haven't.

I do spend a lot of time changing costumes in Monster Hunter though.

A lot of JRPGs do have a sort of 'permanent character' syndrome where the character's appears the same in the same tiny starting village as they do during the final boss. It's because once you make a kawaii uguu big eyes small mouth bikini woman you really can't deviate from it or you'll alienate the fanbase.

There has been a lot of 'costuming' in RPGs recently though.

yep, this is especially infuriating when I spent hard earned in game currency on bathing suits or short shorts
for my male characters

you should play plenty of 3D JRPGs, even early ones like Legend of Legaia allowed this

obviously sprite-based games won't feature this (and will rarely do)

yep, the first game I played that featured this

I love this generalization.

Also as shown in this thread, it's not a "recent" thing.

Another old RPG that features this - Jade Cocoon.

Never played jade cocoon was it good?

I really do not care about this at all in my JRPGs actually.

I don't mind if only a small armor piece and the weapon are the only thing that change, I actually like that the character appearance does NOT change, because often times I like the art design of the characters in JRPG.

A lot of the times in other games with equipment altering appearance I end up not liking the appearance at all and get more annoyed than impressed.

Agree.
