OMG Charlequin just explained to me what Homeopathy actually is

I just thought it was like "eat your mom's chicken soup when you are sick"

wow that's retarded

Yeah people confuse homeopathy with home/herbal/natural remedies. Which is probably why it gets more defense than it deserves.

Unfortunately that's what most people think Homeopathy is. Whenever I ask people what they think homeopathy is they're usual response is something like "natural herbs..." etc. Natural remedies have their own issues *but* they actually have a chance to work than homeopathy.

Yes. Many of Zicam's products are inaccurately labeled as homeopathic, when they actually do contain an active ingredient.
It seems homeopathic has a colloquialism that also refers to things that haven't been tested by the FDA or use natural ingredients (essentially anything that hasn't been defined by the gov as a drug). It's used to target people into natural remedies.

To be honest, that's what I thought it always meant until reading a description of homeopathy years back.

Yeah this, a lot of layman proponents of Homeopathy don't even know what it actually is. Or what it isn't.

Even more confusing is that many 'homeopathic' products contain extra ingredients. When I try to others explain what homeopathy really is, they just look at me confused.

Had a girl recommend I look into the Gerson Therapy to help with my Cystic Fibrosis, not necessarily cure but to help relieve some of the symptoms. I know she was well intended in her recommendation, but all I could do was just smile, nod, and mention I had heard of it from another person. It was NYE and everyone had been drinking so I didn't feel like going into the fact that my disease is not only genetic, but that the treatment for our symptoms and infections require extremely hard hitting medicines due to the resistant nature of the bacteria we have. When I was born the life expectancy was about 13 years, now it is 37-41 and even longer due to the development of antibiotics and treatments.

Then they won't work. In order for a placebo effect you have to believe that it will have an effect.

That is not entirely true. As someone mentioned above people have had positive effects from a placebo while fully knowing that what they were taking would not help. Consciously I have it has no effect, but perhaps sub-consciously I believe it will. I am not a scientist though so *shrug*

During a class presentation, I witnessed a girl claim Gerson Therapy cured her uncle of some terrible illness (cancer?). I asked her to clarify after, but chose not to pry any deeper.

What I find funny about this Gerson Therapy is that it claims to cure cancer by "[reactivating] your body's magnificent ability to heal itself," which makes absolutely no sense if you know what cancer actually is.

actually it makes kind of sense. Apoptosis is a part of the body's defence system and if they trigger cancer cells to start killing themselves the claim would be correct (although I'm positive that there therapy does not do that, not even nowing what the cure is)

I'm sure most advocates for Gerson therapy are thinking in terms of unicorns, rainbows, and magic energy fields, not cell death.

That reminds me of this time I mistakenly went to a chiropractor 'cause of a minor back issue. I didn't realize at the time that chiros weren't "real" doctors and this place was hardcore into subluxation. I got a hint that I wasn't at an actual doctor's office when they made me watch a video saying subluxation will return me to "how God made you" and help prevent disease and such without all those pills. Also had me read a brochure on the topic and quizzed me on it later.

Place gave me the creeps. Can't believe insurance pays for it, seriously felt like a scam. Needless to say I only went that one time (of course, they recommended coming in 3 times a week for months, and the guy never did really address my actual problem).
