My first PC MP FPS. BLOPS2 or Crysis 3?

First a bit of background. I have played for years FPSs online on 360. I've played tons of Halo 3, Halo 4, BF 1943 and, by a massive margin, crazy amounts of MW2 and MW3. I played a bit BF3 on 360 but it frustrated me, the players were just way too hardcore.

Last year I switched to PC gaming. Now I have finally decided that it's time to learn my online shooters with KB/M.

I've got BF3 on PC and completed the campaign on the hardest setting with KB/M. I suspect that the MP community there is even more hardcore than on 360.

So, I'm wondering... which shooter should I get Crysis 3 or BLOPS 2?

BLOPS 2
+ Love CoD MP, have played since MW
+ Had fun with the free weekend, although got massively killed
+ 60FPS fluid when not stuttering
? Am used to play CoD on 360 with controller, so wondering if I can learn CoD properly with kb/m
? Unsure of how active or hardcore the community is, is it easy to find good, non sadistic matches

Crysis 3
+ Could use a palette cleanser while waiting for next gen CoD
? Will it run solid fluid 60FPS (core i5 and 7870 here)
? Not sure if the MP is any fun, haven't played or read anything
? Unsure of how active or hardcore the community is, is it easy to find good, non sadistic matches

Counter-Strike - baptism by fire.

I wouldn't bother with either games in the OP for multiplayer, and the Crysis games are ironically easier with a controller even on PC.

Why aren't you trying out the game you already own?

Also, why not branch out and dip into Team Fortress 2 which is both fantastic AND FREE!. Or even something very different like Tribes: Ascend (which is also free)?

edit: also agree with the post above me)

Try BF3 multiplayer, you can find servers aimed a new players. It's a more fun multiplayer than the other two. you will be able to run Crysis 3 as long as you are not expecting V.High 1080p 4xAA 60fps. I the mediums it should be good.

Counter: Strike - baptism by fire.
This. Play either CS or CS:S. Don't be intimidated by the 'hardcore' community. Make the effort to be better at the game and you'll find it rewarding in the end. You'll learn valuable lessons in CS like being cautious and the best ways to use the different guns taking into consideration their stopping power, bullet spread, and recoil. These lessons will carry over into other good FPS games.

Do not go near counter strike under any circumstance. The level is way too high.
If you can't achieve on BF3, you've no hope in counter strike.

Blops 2 was my first PC CoD, previous CoD's I had played on my PS3. I was really surprised how easy the game was to play on mouse and keyboard. So I think you'd adjust to it quickly too.

Also, TF2 is great.

Hmmm... Never thought about TF2, I thought that it's so old that the ones still playing are super tough by now.

Lol @ Counterstrike

Team Fortress 2 - tons of maps and gameplay modes, players are generally more preoccupied with trading hats and less so about winning, and the game is free so if you decide it's not to your liking you haven't invested in more than some bandwidth and time.

Damn - beaten by the time it took me to type out my reply. And as Sean! said, it's timeless. You can always find custom maps that are aimed towards having a silly and fun time.

It's a pity you didn't make this decision just a few days ago, as the Counter-Strike games were discounted as part of the sale celebrating the public/stable release of Steam Linux.

My vote goes for Planetside actually. The firefights happen often enough but there is still some time between them to think about how to approach the next one and take a breather.

Nope, the game is free now so there's always a lot of noobs around. Also, it's crazy fun and it's (almost) never frustrating.

It may seem like the suggestions are asking that you jump into the deep end, and they are, but everything you learn will carry over into other shooters, and you'll be better for it. What I did when I began playing all those years ago was play offline against bots while I familiarised myself with the map layouts and various guns, then went online to hone my craft.

TF2 should be the easiest to get into. Most pubs aren't hardcore at all and because it's F2P it still has new players coming into it all the time so you won't stand out if you mess up. The community is also more forgiving to new people.

If you need any help or something there's a thread in the community section; http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=472786

Yeef also hosts a server (based in America) that fills up in the evening (American time)

You keep thinking about things in console mp terms. TF2 is not a twitch-based shooter where you die within a second of being seen like Counter Strike or the Call of Duty games. Just try it out since it's free! There's literally nothing stopping you. (Oh but turn on the ding! hit-feedback sound. Completely changes the game!)

And if you don't like the hitsound, you can just change it to whatever you want: http://tf2dingalings.com/

Ah pc gaming

TF2 is a classic especially if you can find a nice server to call home.

CS is ok, but realize that people have played it since 2000 and they know the game in their sleep. You will be sniped through walls, flash banged, overwhelmed, shutdown, and frustrated multiple times. Do not attempt CS unless you have thick skin and a well adjusted mentality.

If you're looking for less classical FPS action Left4Dead is still crisp a series. Usually pretty cheap too.

BF3.

you have the game.

you know you want to.

and GAF has got your back!

Play these instead:

Counter Strike, QuakeArena, Unreal Tournament, or Battlefield 3

Chittagong already mentioned in the OP that the crowd was too hardcore for his liking. The PC crowd will do nothing to change that perception!

Agree with Sean! that suggesting Counter Strike is sending him to the wolves; Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament also fall into that category.

How about third-person shooters? If you haven't played Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, I strongly suggest it. Slow and methodical, and both the single-player as well as the co-op campaigns are a blast.

Jackl's Left 4 Dead suggestion is also right on the money.

Oh! Oh! And if you don't mind the dated visuals, SWAT 4 is still an incredible tactical shooter to this day. How I wish they'd come up with an updated version of that game.

Also given that I didn't even remember there was such a thing as F2P. So I can actually play a game based on my enjoyment, rather than sunk cost.. Crazy! Downloading Planetside 2 too.

Not an FPS, but look into League of Legends if you want F2P. Endless fun.

It is a fate no man should have to suffer.

Then buy something from the store and get addicted to all the loots you'll be getting.
Pyro class is pretty noob friendly as long as your in a compact map. 2Fort and Harvest are my personal favourites and work well with a pyro.

MP - PlanetSide 2
SP - far cry 3

Bookmark rock paper shotgun

Stay away from cod, there are so many better options, don't waste your time on that when there is so much pc gold out there

So much F2P gaming...I can't remember the last time I purchased content...

Also, if we are talking SP too, you better be buying Bioshock Infinite.

Come on, Counter-Strike is not as impenetrable as some are suggesting. It won't be a merry jaunt through the rose garden, but after you've spent a bit of time with the game, CS is ridiculously addictive. In my opinion, the community isn't nearly as hostile and aggressive as the CoD kids, and the gameplay itself is much more rewarding.

oh PLEASE not BLOPS 2. Dont do that to yourself, ESPECIALLY if you loved MW. It's a very different game.

Crysis 3 is.....ok..

I'm probably going to get grilled for this, but CS:GO is also worth a shout, it has a (slightly) more forgiving casual mode and matchmaking, despite the reduced map count, which will surely improve as time goes on. I prefer how it "feels" to CS:S.

I'm seeing $39.99.

CAGROCKS takes the price down to $29.99, but the code is single-use.

In addition to Steam Workshop support, an official variant of cs_assault was added recently. I'm still waiting on cs_siege myself.

Oh man, matchmaking in TF2 is slow, I must be doing it wrong

Def getting Bioshock Infinite and Farcry 3 for SP when deals pop up!
