My girlfriend just bought me two baby turtles from LA's Chinatown...

I had a red eared slider growing up. It was bought from a pet store, but at the time, I had no concept of how terrible these 'general pet stores' selling animals were. We had a massive tank for him and eventually a few feeder fish survived and grew to a size where they just inhabited the tank with him. The turtle only lived about 10 years though, way shorter than the life expectancy, so I felt terrible.

I guess your options should be either keep the turtles and treat them well, or find a specific rescue organization that can help take them. Definitely don't 'release them into the wild'. I'd be pretty hesitant to sell them to another random buyer, especially if the care of the animals actually concerns you at all.

I have a red eared slider (been 13 years), turtles are pretty chill. My one piece of advice is when you are looking to get equipment don't go cheap just shell out the money.

My sister had a pet turtle when we were kids. They smell like shit. She didn't take care of it very well so I ended up having it in my room for the last month or so before it died.

Tell her to return them.

Pets aren't something you just spring on people. They cost a lot of money and time to take care of properly. Money and time you may not have or are not willing to spend on them at the current time.

My dad had a couple of turtles way back when, and they were super resilient. Just make sure they have room to swim/try giving them some land in their aquarium by making an island out of dirt and sectioning it off with glass. Turtles are a lot of work, so it kind of sucks you had 2 sprung on you, but just make sure they have a good habitat and you feed them worms on a regular basis and they should be golden.

Just wash your hands after handling them (My dad used rubber gloves) and be prepared to try offsetting their smell, and you'll be good, too.

man, turtles are cool.
had a few growing up and its great watching them grow to be so big.

cleaning the tank was certainly an annoyance though.

When you think about it we are all brought into this world without consideration or remorse.

Consider giving them away to a family who wants them? I'm not joking when I say the new TMNT movie coming out might give kids the urge to own a turtle.

See if you can Craigslist them to someone.

Giving turtles to a kid is probably gonna be a worse fate for the turtle than dying in the wild

If I go to Chinatown can I get a red panda for a pet?

Fuck the police, I'll go into hiding with my red panda bro

I would sell my soul and live underground for eternity just to have a red panda.

We bought 2 turtles this weekend!

My little sister wanted some so we agreed and made an aquarium for them.

Still need to get a filter, though.

I think she fooled you because that's a fake turtle.

I used to own a frog and turtle. I gave my turtle to my cousin and he still has it but my frog died. He got into the filter and died.

As far as pets go,turtles don't give a fuck. As long a you just throw some lettuce their way they will survive.

No. Just, no.

Turtles, just like any other animal, can and do get sick, malnutrition, die, etc. Just throwing them some lettuce, which is virtually devoid of any nutrition, will ensure that you have a dead turtle soon enough.

If you buy them a tank that is big enough and design the interiors well, they can have a happy life.
Just get them out of that horrible plastic stuff asap

Had 2 turtles when I was young. One went missing one day though. The other got nice and big. Then 2-3 years later we found the missing one, still alive. Same small size, looked odd next to the big one.

Are tortoises less smelly, and do they make good pets?

Tortoises are basically vegetarian, so their food tends to smell less than turtle pellets, especially if you are not fastidious about cleaning the turtle's water.

As for whether or not tortoises are good pets, it depends on what you want in a pet. Tortoises do not emote like mammals, or birds, and many find them quite boring. Really think about it, and do a good deal of reading. Some species of tortoise can outlive you, and some, like sulcatas, can also get quite large.

Whoa, where was it after 3 years o_O
My sister use to get a new turtle nearly every week as none ever lived past a few days, so like clockwork she would get new one every Friday or so. They were only like $5 or something. Now that I look back I wonder if she was killing them to get a new one as she was sort of devious and the first to stick toothpicks into any of our fishes that died.
Dude what??

Did you ever ask her what was up with that? Didn't your parents notice? Hell, even the pet store she was getting them from should have raised an eyebrow!

My second cousin got a snapper from one of those places and twenty odd years later she's still going strong and is the size of a dinner plate. Doesn't keep the turtle in a tank though because there weren't any big enough. Instead, the turtle just has a tub of water with a little ramp and roams around the house.

I'm overtired and the thought of a turtle running away made me lol.
I was about 7 at the time and kept it in one of those big gray storage bins with everything outside. One night a thunderstorm happened, and the next morning I found it tipped over

Ah the ol "escaping" turtle story. I have a similar story from when i was a kid. Turtle in a grey storage bin outside on a balcony overnight. Next day I came out and he was gone.

I'm sure my folks took him to that farm where parents usually take unwanted pets.

I knew a kid who used to steal baby turtles from Petland. He would bring them to school. Don't know wtf he did with those things later though.
