I saw disbelief, I saw major relief (Sarah Palin, what?!), but I didn't see anyone "gloating", especially with all the negative connotations that come with the word gloat. I might be annoyed by all the songs too, I didn't experience anything like that. Except when I put "Paint the Whitehouse Black" song on my Facebook page. Heheh not sure how my boss felt about that.

I worked on a military installation, so we were specially instructed not even to mention it, really.
Huh. Why's that?

OP are you dark skinned at all? Like do you tan well or at least have an olive complexion? If so have your fiance tell your mom you are actually Latino then make sure to call white people honkies every time you are at her house.

Amusing as that would be, I'm white as they come.

The worst racists are the ones who KNOW it's wrong to be racist, and don't bother changing.

Yes it is.

But I say worry about it if or when you have a kid and she starts infecting the child with wrong ideas. As it stands her behaviour isn't your concern.
It's easier said than done, man. Some people can tolerate hateful tripe during get-togethers or a weekend BBQ. I respect those people. They have high threshold for bullshit tolerance. Others (read: majority), dont. If I were pestered with paranoid, hateful crap every time we get together, I'd probably snap and say something. It might shut her up for the rest of her life, and my girl wouldn't like it, but doggonit sometimes it's worth it.

No, not really. None to speak of in Buttfuck, IN.
No point in even trying to fix it. I'm guessing she's pretty old so she's gonna be set in her ways, the best thing you can do is to ignore her. If you had some non-white friends I'd probably let them know about her and even talk to her and tell her not to behave like her usual self if a situation might arrive where she and your friends would be in the same room(ie: the wedding). Also, does your gf know that her mom's a racist? How does she feel about it?

Is that a fact? I've seen the video multiple times (Beck ran it constantly) and I didn't see the intimidation going on. Maybe I missed something.

It's not something new, but I don't let Fox News convince me of the narratives they try to build.

It is, if you understand who is trying to build the narrative, and why. I don't let a couple videos influence my perception of an entire race.

Sounds like someone has an agenda against Fox News and they are letting it bias them.

While i do on occasion watch Fox News, I despise right and left wing mentalities that leave people blind to the truth, period. And if you and I are thinking of the same video with the Black Panthers standing outside the voting station then you must be blind. They were intimidating people. They were large black men with clubs... Yeah most people would call that intimidating. I am not being racist at all but you have any large man, black, white, brown, yellow, green purple, etc with a club standing around leering at you as you wait to vote... 9 times out of 10 you will feel intimidated.

As for letting a video influence my perception of an entire race... yeah it is more like nearly 30 years of witnessing what actually happens in the city of memphis that has influenced me.

I think the most common excuse is, "well everyone's little racist". It might be true, but what I don't like about it is that it gives people a convenience to not try to have better judgment or try grow out of their prejudices.

I want to join the side that said OP should deal with it and just try to avoid uncomfortable situations. I'm trying to imagine the wedding though...

News flash: A lot of older people are at least somewhat racist.
Newsflash: 100% of human beings have prejudices that can be construed as racist. We just do our best to hide them because that's what society dictates we do.

my ex girlfriends father was racist as hell. dude hated any non european non christians. wish i was there when he found out his little princess was fucking a brown muslim dude

i always thought racism and shit was something that was common in poor and uneducated people but this guy was a fucking brilliant engineer and he was pretty baller

My parents are racist. It's strange cause I don't remember them being that way when I was growing up, but now they definitely are.
This is how my parents are. Maybe I was just too young or something to catch it, but they always seemed like nice people. I mean they were always gung ho conservative, but never flat out racist

But recently they've been saying stuff like "Bah, the only reason people voted for Obama is because he's black" and saying they support racial profiling on searches in airlines and things like that "because its more likely to be a muslim, its part of their religion"

I'm just appalled when they say shit like that and it really makes it hard for me to have any sort of repect for them

And don't even get me started on my mom's homophobia.

I don't even believe it's true.

When taken at face value, racism is the mistaken belief that your race is somehow superior to others, and acting on that assumptian. We all have our prejudices, but we're not all "racist" by default. That's an overly cynical worldview, I think.

The human mind at the very least stereotypes groups of people by the actions of those it sees. Whether consciously or subconsciously. This is an involuntary action of the mind.

Not sure why this would even be an issue for you. It's not like your marrying the fucking mother or anything and as a white person her slightly mild-sounding racism would have no discernable effect on you one way or the either anyway?

It could be worse:

"Black people are unpleasant to work with. It wouldn't be a problem if they were just polite and more educated, but they refuse to improve themselves. It's not racist to think that way, either, because it's true."

...love Christmas. Her racist rant actually woke me up from a nap.

Ugh as if rude people are confined and entirely comprised of a certain race. I got news for her.

That's very ignorant. Jesus, these type of people need to be off this Earth. It sucks you have to deal with her.

My reaction to her, if I cared enough to provide her with one:

I work in a public library, primarily with children. 50% of them are white, 50% of them are ethnic. Sometimes I'm called upon to remove rude, disruptive children from the library. As it so happens, the vast majority of children I kick out are white. This does not mean that white kids are inherently more obnoxious than ethnic kids. What this means is shit like this is completely random. Annoying jerks spring up spontaneously from a variety of different races and backgrounds. Yes, you are racist. If you're a racist, just admit it. I'd have more respect for a self-professed racist than a racist that constantly claims not to be one.

Guys. I met a guy who works on a super-secret nuclear base, and told me sotto voce that they have a repeating noise always sounding in the background. That's more weird than racism.

I always wonder why these kinds of racists even care. You'd think at that age you'd be whateves. Instead of spouting racist diatribes.

I find the ones who don't know they're racist and shocked when you call them out on it to be more annoying in my experience.

Honestly, I'm not sure if it's a case of not knowing they're racist, or simply having the tact not to spout it everywhere they go. Like the people who whisper every time they have to say "black people", not because it's wrong, but because they associate it with internal thoughts that make it wrong.

Then some, like my future mother-in-law, come at it from an angle of morality. As a member of the mainstream population, she's had it drilled into her head that racism is "wrong". So what's a person to do when they're both racist, and holier-than-thou? They call their racism something else, because surely someone so godly could never feel an emotion as base as hatred for another race.

What does your gf say about her mom?

Racism, bigotry and Islamaphbia are all at crazy levels these days. Your mother in law is a bad person and should be ashamed.

They may be more annoying, but they come about it honestly. People who are willfully racist are just bad humans.

Not going to get too specific... but some of my relatives are very racist, and one of their daughters just had a black son. Sounds funny until you realize the kid actually has to live in that environment :/
