My Summer of Final Fantasy!

I've been going with Scarlet's FF2 method and... Random number generators hate me or something. I get no drops, hardly any stat boosts and the worst possible combination of enemies.

Day01.jpg

End of my first day playing. Got some money but it looks like I need at least 39,000 Gil to get the stuff in Mysidia. The drops are still hating me but Frionel is finally gaining some freaking stats.

If anyone's playing FF2 via Dawn of Souls or PSP, don't build your guys up by hitting yourselves. I did that and wound up with retarded overpowered characters and slept through the game. It got even worse when I stripped everybody naked because then their agility just built up too fast and they dodged like crazy.

What's your FF2 method? I'm willing to try it.

http://redscarlet.paragonsigma.com/dirgeofrk1.avi <-start of game, getting prepared for swamp north of Fin.

http://redscarlet.paragonsigma.com/dirgeofrk2.avi <-getting money from dropped items and MP at the swamp north of Fin (took longer than it should have).

http://redscarlet.paragonsigma.com/dirgeofrk3.avi <-going to and back from Mysidia (can just ride a Chocobo there if you want).

RK was having trouble, so I told him I'd do a vid of it. It's much faster to simply play the game though, but it's what I tend to do now (it can be kind've fun and it has its risks).

The method is this basicly:
Frionel: two swords, lightning
Maria: staff, dagger, fire, cure
Guy: axe, spear, ice
Get Minwu ASAP, sell his ether, buy remaining items.
Level the above weapons and spells to 2.
Go to the swamp above Finn and. Fight the tougher enemies there, killing them with magic. Ogre mages and mages drop spellbooks that can sell for up to 5000 gil.
When you have a good chunk of money, go to Mysidia in the south and buy good weapons, thieves gloves and spells.
Resume game normally.
I am at the money part now and at first the battles were real rough but now that my spells are hitting 3, it is getting easier. I had some real bad luck last night but still got a chunk of cash.

I can do a writeup if you want Himu. Yeah, it is a lot easier going if spells are at level 3..I should've just forced them to be at that level before I started fighting in the swamp. I never tried giving the Ming Wu guy an attack spell early on, but I gave him Fire this time and it worked really well.

Yeah, I got a lightning book drop and gave it to him. Helps a good bit.

For that part of the game, Ice and Fire would be a little more useful. The only thing I can think of that lightning would work well against are the red blob guys, the blue bombs, and bombs. The red blob guys have about 100HP, the blue bombs are weaker than bombs, and fire may work just as well on the blue ones and I think works better on the bombs. Fire works on the black blobs (stronger), vampire girls or whatever, and ghosts on the way to Mysidia, and Ice works against the turtle guys in the swamp, the mantis monsters on the way to Mysidia, and the yellow blobs around Mysidia. But that's up to you (I mean, you could give him Cloud or whatever instead of you really wanted anyway).

I think you can put a magic book in a character's item slot and it casts some level of the spell..but that seems a bit wasteful money-wise.

Well after everyone here was bitching I just went ahead and quit my hp grind early, Guy is my highest with 700hp, everyone else right now is sub 400. Might just start over or just continue to play and try to get to that town and buy some nice equipment.

Well, I gave Ming Wu Lightning on account of I got it for free.
Just got home from work so now I can get some progress made, I hope.
Just got Fire and Berzerk books! Guess I can pass the Fire onto Ming Wu or get the 200 is it?

Got 30316 gil. Now to try to make this trek to Mysidia.

Mysidia!
I reset a lot of times the way here. Whoops.

So I trialed RK's FCC a bit. I rolled a dice to decide the job, and ended up with Black Mages:

WEB-BLACKMAGES.jpg

I didn't have any problems up until North Mountain, where I got my ass whooped due to some silly mistakes and Magisa's drain attack taking away a character's life in one blow. Ambushes on the way up which led to a lack of Phoenix Downs also contributed to my demise:

WEB-WIPEOUT.png

Beat 'em on my second try by putting Forza to sleep and spamming Magisa with magic though.

I've enjoyed the challenge so far, but I've decided to wait until everyone's ready. It's probably more fun if you do this simultaniously with a bunch of people to see how everyone is faring.

In the meantime, I guess I'll play FFVI after all!

I guess I should finish the GBA versions of FF5/6 at some point.

If there's still room for RK's FF5 challenge, I'd like to give it a shot. Sounds pretty neat.

I started up FF3's fan translation since I don't like how slow the DS version is, but I'm barely into it. My team (Slicer, Slappy, Wizard, and Healer) are fine for now, though, and I basically remember how best to get through the game.

want to make it fun? Kill your thief and fighter until you get the rat tail.

I'm at the Nepto Shrine in FF3. Slicer is a black mage for now, Slappy's still a monk, Wizard's downgraded from red to black wizard, and Healer's still a white wizard. I've saved my arctic/anarctic winds just for the upcoming boss. Anyway, I'd post screens but I don't know how to take them in FCE Ultra GX. Once we're out of here I'm going to go back to fighter/monk/red wizard/white wizard and stick with those until I get the fire crystal's jobs, where I will go knight/monk/not sure/scholar, then from there it becomes easy mode.

Day02.jpg

Didn't post this last night.
As you can see, Frionel doesn't want to do shit. I've been trying to do some fights around Mysidia for cash, but they usually end in failure instead of loot so I may just head back to the main course of the game. Guess I gotta get the MP up a bit, though.

The GBA version of 5 is absolutely the best version, with no real downsides.
The GBA version of 6 is good, but one could argue that the SNES version is better. They're both fine, in my opinion. I personally prefer the GBA version because of the bugfixes.

I couldn't stomach the GBA version of FF6. The bugs don't bother me that much since I just ignore them. The music/sfx and graphics too a huge hit. Normally, I'd overlook that...but this is FF6.

FF5 GBA is not too bad, but I prefer the original version on SFC. I'm too used to playing FF on a console...

As for the thread...I will be replaying FF6 on the SNES later this year. Right now I am in the middle of replays for FF5 GBA and FF7 PS1. This will be my last reply of FF7 for years, at least.

This thread makes me realize how long it's been since I replayed any of this stuff. FFVII in 2006, FF5 and 10 in 2005, FF6 in 2004. (Well, and FF4 DS last year, but not quite the same.) I've only ever played FF8 and FF9 once!

People should really come up with some neat challenges for this if it's gonna happen.

You've only played FF8 once?! lol, I've played it about three times and I despise it. Every time I get temped to go through it again (for the lulz), I remember all the horrible moments that made me never want to play it again. I believe the replays helped seal the deal of hate for me forevermore.
.

Wow, FF8 hate and thinking the SNES version is better than the GBA version of 6? And I thought I was messed up!

What makes the GBA version superior? Honest question, I never looked into it and am considering picking it up at some point.

Whoa! I'm in for that! Here's my line-up :
2 - GBA
3 - DS
4 - DS
5 - GBA
6 - GBA
7 - PSX
8 - PSx
9 - PSX :D

I'll start this as soon as my exams end (in 1.5 weeks :D)

Better translation, dialogue, lots of moments that were left out completely in the Woosely version or censored put in the gba version's English localization.

Hmmm, that sounds worthy of purchase. Thanks for the info.

Hey RK, I'm doing FF8 after 6.
:S
I love 8 so much. But I'd need a challenge this time. If I just do a regular play I try to do everything and then spend too much time on it.

The bonus Dragon's Dungeon was also a blast to play.

Can someone do me a soild? ...List all the FFs, including spin-offs in a timeline like fashion? or point me in the direction as to where I can find this list.. Please?

What would be some good FF8 challenges?
Not sure. I already did a no leveling challenge and that was good fun.

Guh I'm still four or five marks + Yiazmat/Some esper/Omega shy of completing FFXII. Worth bothering with? Yiazhee is said to take between 2-5 hours and in order to reach Omega I have to go through that shitty shit shit shit Great Crystal.

Tempted to go to hell with it and play some...????...shit the only other FF I own is FF8. =(
That and I'm playing BoF4/ToV as well.

Since the GF's are so customizable, doing something like a GF backdraft probably wouldn't end up being too interesting either. Hmm.

I don't think any monsters around Mysidia drop items, just money.

It plays and sounds like ass to me, if you want another side. Battle felt extremely sluggish, the mode 7 parts (like flying) are painful, and the music is horrendous. Oh yeah, and they changed around how you do the Blitz attacks, too.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I have to say about it, too, with my greatest gripe being the music.

Himuro said:

The music in itself is fine, but to a
retard
purist like me, the instruments sound off or distorted at times, ruining the experience for me a bit. Of course, if you're not used to the original you're not as likely to notice. I'm sure the GBA version is at least a good an experience as, if not better than, the original if you weigh the downs with the ups. After all, it's fundamentally the same game.

Well I've gotten tired of pokemon again, so I'm about to start with I. :)

GBA version, but I want to get through I and II quickly anyway.

Thanks to this thread, I sorta started my own little "challenge".. details below:

Final Fantasy.. I’ve never been your biggest fan (not a fan at all, actually). I seldomly participated in any of your adventurous entries, opting to either make an abrupt departure or simply not participating at all (with the exception of FF12, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience playing it but never finished), so.. with the release of FFXIII drawing closer and my interest increasing, I figured I’d start from square one (Heh) and complete 1 - 12 (yes, including 11 at some point) before the debut of FF13 (JPN, november 9th?).

No, this isn’t a speed run. I want to enjoy my experience. I want to give this franchise the shot it probably deserves. And then some..

MainQuest:

FF Dawn of Souls (Remake?)
FF II (FF Origins?)
FF III (DS version)
FF IV (DS version)
FF V (FF Anthology)
FF VI (FF Anthology)
FF VII
FF VIII
FF IX
FF X
FF X-2 (Spin-off?)
FF XI (Erm..)
FF XII

SideQuest (I choose a select few of spin-offs that tie into previous FFs to play as well):

FF VII: Dirge of Cerberus
Crisis Core: FF VII
FF XII: Revenant Wings
FF Tactics: War of the Lions
FF Tactics Advanced
FF Tactics Advanced 2

I’ll start with FF Dawn of Souls but I’m not sure if I’ll through in numerical or chronological order of release.

If anything is missing or any suggestions, please let me know. I’ll post my progress, thoughts, etc. as I playthrough each title. This should be interesting, as I hardly complete any games these days. Wish me luck!

Lots o' final fantasy

It's taken me 4 years, but I've beat 1-8 and 10. It's quite a process, but it also really puts into perspective which ones are good and which ones are just awful... It's also funny to see the time you have to put into each one. I beat 1 in under 10 hours, but 8 took closer to 50. All in all 6 is still my favorite, but I don't get the hate the PSX FF's get. They are all good, just in different ways.

I'm on disc 3 in FF9, and then I'll move onto FF12, I'm gonna skip 11.

Plus it gave me a chance to figure out that I hate job classes in turn based RPG's, I always end up using like 6 of them.

Hope you have as much fun as I did... Well hopefully more, 2 and 3 were a choir.

Yeah, my problem has always been the level of commitment these games require. Not to say I never played a game beyond 50 hrs.. but it has to be a DAMN good game for me to invest so much time. For instance, FF7.. I barely scratched the surface (4-5 hrs?) before I bailed. I can't remember exactly why I stopped but I did.

So.. that pretty much leads to where I am now.

Good luck, I went through them all a couple summers ago. I was pretty ready for it to be over at a couple of points, but getting suggestions on alternative ways to play some of the games really helped. You probably won't have that issue if you haven't played some of them all to much. Have fun.

This may be a dumb question, but since FF2 is the only FF I haven't beaten, does anyone have any tips? I started out following Red Scarlet's video, getting (as of now, but I'll grind for more money) Thief's gloves from Mysidia, but is there anything I'm missing? The last time I played, I got to the Jade Passage/Pandemonium and just got obliterated, despite the game being pretty easy up to that point (and this happened both with the Famicom and GBA versions).

Any tips would be appreciated, since it seems to be the only RPG I've played that I can't seem to complete (unless we include Unlimited SaGa...which is its own thread).

I'm already starting to regret my decision :X (currently playing FF1)

I Just left Cornelia, not before I stocked up on new equipment and spells for the future saviors (?) of Cornelia. Immediately after entering the wild.. RANDOM BATTLE! one of the many "standards" of the genre I almost totally forgot about nor miss. And so frequent.. but I'm not complaining (yet). MP doesn't regenerate. Yeah, totally missed that one. I kept the default classes, I didn't alter them when I started a new game. So..

Beck (Warrior)
Feist (Thief)
Aue (meant to input autumn.. too lazy, White Mage)
Orion (Black Mage)

Twenty minutes in and I just reached the Chaos Shrine. I'll keep my impressions scarce. This is just a really nostalgic experience..

I still remember fairly well my first experience with Final Fantasy (the first game, as well as the series). Having to buy spells, awesome music, unearthing
the airship
(spoilered for you specifically, just in case), it was a great experience. You really had to work at it too, I can remember fighting ogres for what seemed like forever.

Oh dear. Well, I still have tons of other games to play so maybe I'll pass on getting that. V is the only one of the GBA games I own, I had IV but Cecil's battle glitch bugged me really badly, I never even finished that version. V is good times though.
