Dude, I just want to go back to sleep. Why'd you have to kick my ass?

When they removed Dark and stuff from the US game, did they rebalance it as well?

No. You are playing 'medium-type'.

Im about to start FF Origins. Is there anything I should know early on for FF 1? Cuz I heard it gets absurdly hard later on in the game.

Once you start going to the northern continents, pay attention to item descriptions to see if stuff casts spells in battle, that can help out a lot depending on what party you brought along.
There's the Peninsula of Power too, and other stuff.

Man, VIII sure was awesome. I'm enjoying your little LP that's going on here, Himuro.

In IV, I've been raiding the last dungeon. Doing pretty well, everyone's around level 65 or so. Almost lost an hour and a half of playtime to a Red Dragon ambush in a chest, but thanks to Kain's Phoenix and a bit of luck, we managed to scrape by, after which I immediately teleported out and saved. :lol

Nice dog.

Up to Cosmo Canyon in FFVII so only a few more hours till I hit disc 2. I'm actually going through and grabbing all the Enemy Skills as most of the time I don't care for them.

Man I'd love to play some old school PS1 era Final Fantasy, and I have all 3 games, yet I somehow managed to lose all 3 disc 1's for them. Of all the CD's to lose...

Downed Ruby & Emerald weapon tonight since I never had or at least I don't recall ever having done so. Had to do a bit of online research as I was missing stuff recommended like mime/KoR/etc. Emerald went down in some Lucky 7s glory then I just cheesed Ruby because I need to get to sleep and I want to finish FFVII tomorrow. :lol

I really need to get a PSX memory card and FFVIII and IX, but I'm paranoid about getting a crappy third party one or something. :lol

Played more IV today! Made it all the way to the bottom of the last dungeon, acquiring the Treasure Hunter augment. Along the way, I managed to acquire a Black Tail, which is a 0.4% drop which can be traded for some sort of awesome equipment that carries over to new games. Sweetness. Now I'm going to use Treasure Hunter to get the Rainbow Pudding, so I can continue along a painful quest line for more awesome loot. After which I might consider farming for more tails of various sorts, then of course, fighting the last boss.

Man this thread makes me wanna play though ff8, never finished it, truly one of the gems of the ps1 era. Most of the FF games are in their own way.

Oh yeah, I remember that barfing horny guy has Shiva's card; grab the porno magazine he's looking for at Timber and give it to him on the White SeeD Ship.

Care to elaborate?

The US SNES version of FF4 is different from the original Japanese version (sometimes called Hardtype) and the rerelease actually called FF4 Easytype. Easytype has some changes that make it easier than the US version (like Ribbons absorb Fire/Ice/Elec, and you can find some sword that isn't magnetic before the magnet cave or something). So, if the original Japanese version is deemed 'hardtype', and the other one IS called easytype, then the US one falls in the middle between them.

This page has some other examples. I have both versions (9 in total) and yeah, the Easytype release is quite different from the US one.

On the flip side, some aspects make Easytype a little 'harder' than the other two; I think you can dupe a weapon one time in the entire game, then the bug stops working, I *think* the battle equip trick (Earth Hammers for Rosa and Rydia!) doesn't work, and Red Dragons seemed to counter me every time I hit them, so they game overed me a couple times due to having everyone attack at once and I couldn't withstand their counters.

Reading through this thread really woke my desire to play FF again, but since I've played FF 6-8 too many times and too recently I relized that I've yet to play FF12.
So done and done, I'm now awaiting my copy of FF12 which will make my weekend so much more delightful.

Thank you GAF!

This thread has made me want to try out 9 for the first time.
Started last night.

Battles seems way too slow to load AND I am using emulation.

Use a faster disc speed if you have it, on a normal PS1 it took like 18-19 seconds from the screen spiral stuff to when ATB meters have started to move.

Wow. The game is a lot of fun so far.
Haven't played much but it seems a lot lighter which I like.

Are you having Zidane steal? If I don't steal a potion/the crappiest thing, I steal again!

So Zidane does 7000+ damage when he gets his last ability. :lol

Such a stupidly good ability. I was obsessive-compulsive about stealing even before I learned of the existence of that ability.

I hope you enjoy it. It has a radically different feel compared to most other Final Fantasies, but it's one of my favorites. The world's lore is insanely fleshed out, and the game is full of stunning locations. I'd play it again if I didn't have such a huge backlog.

Maybe a stupid post, just got curios. What 3D Final Fantasy is considered the best FF game according to the general public?

Himuro said:
What have you done?

The "general public" is too broad a term considering that opinions vary from game to game, but FF7 is regarded the most. That doesn't mean it's the best 3d FF either, it's just that it's by far the most popular.

Yah I did a bad thing ^^;

Since "hardcore" gamers usually have a certain game in a series they think is the best (in this case FFT when considering most gamers I'm around) but the general public usually tend to like other parts of game series. Mostly depending on the promotion done back then. Which is why I am kind of interested in which was played more / regarded better.

FF7 was special because it was the first one in 3D but then again the general public mostly wasn't aware of the earlier. But it still was unique in it's kind of RPG's. Here in Sweden FF8 was a lot more promoted due to the success of the previous game. Which makes me think a lot of more people might've gotten their hands on it and made certain memories and bonds to it.

Or I could be totally off and it might be one of the later entries.

8 was a big hit at my school, i think partly because of the rendered scenes (there were a lot of TV ads of the dancing bit).

i'd completely forgotten about the dream sequences! those rocked :lol

i think i'm too much of a graphics ho to replay it without a remake of some kind though. the backgrounds are great but those polygon models...

The animation still impresses me to this day because the reactions and body expressions used by the characters are so animated. You can always tell what they're thinking due to their expressions and they have these quirks despite the 3d being pretty limited. I get the same reaction when I play FFVI, except it's in 2d and more limited (ie. all the characters have the same type of expressions in FFVI, but in FFVIII every character has their own unique palette.)

The characters have these visual quirks that is absent in other 3d FF's. I love Squall's "I'm thinking" pose, or the thing he does where he puts his hand on his hip when he's being sarcastic
Yeah man, your seriously making me remember the fucking awesome fun I had with Final 8! It was basically my first FF game I played from beginning to end! 9/9/99 NEVER Forget. I was far to poor to enjoy the DC at that time.(Didn't really interest me at the time anyway!) I only knew about FF in general about a year before this game came out! I watched my older cousin play Final 7, and was floored by the graphics :lol :lol :lol :lol I played it some but really couldn't play it because I didn't have a PS1 at the time! I got one the summer of 99, and got Star Ocean 2, will I found out about this game, DAY ONE! I played it ever day until I beat it one month later! 80 hours later, damn what a good time, I'm not going to replay this though, until I can play it on my PSP, I'm to retarded to do CFW. That and I haven't had much luck with it when I did do it when PSP1000 was released. Right after that I bought 7 so this was really my first FF!:D :D

I'm replaying FF7 on PSP now from PSN, PLLLLEEEEAAASSSEE Sqaure release FF8 for PSN please!

Keep the pictures coming. They're reminding me about how imaginative FF8's setting and story are. I mean, all of the Final Fantasies 6+ have great settings, but I don't think 8's is really like any setting in any other game I've played.

I'm thinking of picking up FF7 on the ps store after playing through crisis core on my psp (I'm up to chapter 8 on it)

I've never played a FF before crisis core, and so far, I love the story and setting. Will I be shafted if I buy 7?

There we go, finished FFVII tonight. I think I'll start on either XII next since I never finished or X since I've never played it.

No, its at worst a good game. I'm assuming if you like the setting of CC so much, you'll eat up FF7.

Wait, you're playing it on PSP? Did they fix the Graviya/Draw issues and the PSP freezing up? If that's the case I'll start playing it again!

Himuro said:
Yes, I'm playing on the psp. No, it still freezes depending on what happens.
So, how did you get Diablos then? I never seemed to get him because he always casted Graviya and just stopped playing.

Hehe, loving your little updates, Himuro!
However, hate that you're nearly about to get to the part of the story where my disk freezes and I can't go ay further. EUGH.
This *needs* a PSN release like, yesterday?

Most of the time.

I rarely ever play games at home in the past month. I mostly played FF1 when I was at work.

Either way, there's nothing more comfortable than playing FF8 on my bed.

I know what you mean bro, believe it or not playing FF8 on my bed with my PSP is MY serenity, nothing more relaxing.

Best game ever and always will be

Yeah I'm still going strong with FF7 just got to Nibelheim, loving it on the PSP. Square better not wait a year or something before releasing 8 on PSN. I hope...

Starting FFVIII tonight thanks to the posts in this thread. I never really gave the PSX-era FFs attention outside of VII so I'd say its about time I do.

I never really gave FFVIII a chance back in the day and I've been impressed over and over with the use of body language in game and the FMVs. One of those little things I wouldn't have picked up on when I was younger.

Himuro I need some updates!!
I'm practically re-playing the game through all your screen caps, haha.

I've just started re-playing FF6 again. Terra just screamed like a bitch and flew away :/

FF8 is pretty fun. I should probably play the English version, next time, though, so I'm not tempted to exploit the junction glitch in the Japanese version (which I always end up doing... it's so awesome).

Over the past week I've been on a FF7 binge due to the recent hoopla:

- Double-dip: FF7:Advent Children Complete on Blu Ray
- Double-dip: FF7 via PSN: not planning to play again anytime soon but wanted it back in my collection since selling the original PSX disc release for $60 on eBay last December =)
- Crisis Core FF7: picked up a GH copy for $15, currently playing; not bad so far...still getting used to the 'quasi action-RPG hybrid' style of gameplay but still fun

Seeing Himu's screenshots is really tempting me to give VIII another go.

I didn't hate VIII, but I rolled my eyes at the story so many times I wrote the whole game off. Truth is, there's lots I enjoyed about it - Quistis, the Laguna story, Triple Triad, the GFs, that INSANE fight with Omega Weapon. Also thought VIII's final dungeon is one of the best in the series.

Think I'll fire it up this weekend.

Yeah, it should be on 'normal' instead of original or full screen.
I think it's more annoying to play it in normal than full, it's really not that bad when you're in game as when they're screen shots I guess.
