Do we really have to bother with 720p in the year 2013?
Until there is enough juice for 1080p yes. 1080p is compromise if you dealing with consoles and their power envelop.
Do we really have to bother with 720p in the year 2013?
Nope.
wait, was that video a joke? Serious question.

Wait, so there was a Dualshock 4 in the video? You didn't see anything suspicious?

Yep, in fact this thought didn't occur to me till yesterday when I went to bestbuy to pick up some headphones, I walked over to the TV section to see if they had any 4k's on display, and when I walked around there were so many 720p tv's and they were all the front line display's and being far cheaper than the 1080p TV's it's easy to see which one most people would get.
Especially when in store they look almost identical with the test footage, hell some of the 1080p screens actually looked worse because they were the low end brands.
You're right. Only most Call of Duty games on 360 run at 600p. The point though was that 720p is still an upgrade in terms of resolution compared to every single CoD game on 360 (and PS3 as well).
If he moves further away from the screen, Junior status is barely noticeable. I can confirm this.
Duuude, that was a way too serious response to a joke video.
This is not a very well thought out defense (other than him saying people jump to conclusions; of course people do. But Microsoft conditioned this with the trust issues right now.)
First, to address the Kinect argument for a moment: it's preposterous. If I got a Xbox One, I will immediately be throwing the Kinect in the garbage - it's a worthless dead end tech for gaming and always will be. So, I have no "distance" requirement and many hardcore gamers will turn the thing off entirely and will never use it, even if they don't go to as extreme measures as I do. Second, most of the ways the core games utilize Kinect don't require any sort of distance that would make telling resolution differences even close to difficult.
Second, even IF it were true that Kinect put you at a distance you couldn't tell anyway, it's a dumb argument. The argument essentially is "well hey sure it's factually inferior, but you won't be able to notice how factually inferior it is from 8 feet back! Right guys!? It's not so bad!" I mean, how is that an argument? All it does is say it's a huge problem, but thanks to a different shitty design element, you won't notice the other shitty design element!
It doesn't change that the element is still inferior, that 720p is markedly worse for games and very noticeable on any decent TV set. What you're banking on essentially is that the majority doesn't notice due to Kinect, but that's silly in any event: most casuals don't immediately recognize such differences in resolution even close up. So, let's say that is a majority of people. Are we suddenly going to hold back technical advancement because these people have difficult noticing something so obvious? Of course not. Here's the critical point: You continue to make things better, and whether those individuals notice or not it doesn't matter since you'll always be selecting the best possible technological option within the price range. In other words, let's say an average of 20% of people who play Xbox One with Kinect can notice the resolution at those distances. Now, you went with 720p. Sure, the other 80% won't notice it. But you'll still have 20% of people upset. Now let's go the other scenario. Let's say they had 1080p. Now, that 20% of people still notice it's superior and are pleased. But that other 80% won't notice either way, they'll just be receiving the benefit of a factually superior experience and everyone wins.
The argument that the video then progresses, which is totally separate and has absolutely nothing to do with the resolution argument and just makes him seem desperate, is that "Xbox One has all sorts of apps." What in the green God's earth has that got to do with anything? First, PS4 has all sorts of apps. Some of them are also exclusive. They are something of a focus as well. Once again, resolution would still impact that as well, and whether you utilize Kinect or the same exact arguments win out. There's no reason the apps should have any baring on the idea that 720p is "not so bad." I cannot even fathom a connection. He said you can Skype, so? You can video chat on PS4. There is a PS Eye that allows gestural and voice commands of the UI. And yet, the system can still do 1080p in most of its major games!
One design makes concessions for a huge group of people, the other does not make those concessions. It's a reasonable offering for $399.99, in other words. Yes, PC will always be better, but there are certain expectations that come with buying a console at a price that demands a real quality balance between the price you can offer and the technology you can offer. PS4 clearly has that balance: $100 cheaper and significantly more powerful.
So, the remaining argument must by default be: Well, you better damn well hope that Kinect makes the system worth that added money. And unfortunately for Microsoft, their first Kinect flagship title doesn't come until Spring 2014, and they fill in the hole with shite like Just Dance 4 and a sequel to one of the worst reviewed games of last gen, Fighters. And then what? Some lame voice commands which could just have easily been done with a headset and require no distance from the set? Profile recognition? Come on. These are neat novelties and conveniences, something that shaves maybe 2-5 seconds off of nav time. If I really thought that shit was worth anything at all, I'd just save myself the extra $100 and buy the PS4 Eye for $60, still be cheaper than XBO, and get the lame gestural and UI navigation that is so pivotal. So again, to me this argument is extremely weak as a justification for the extra $100. And all of this is a horrible argument for why the system being 720p is "not so bad."
That was a long post for a joke OP....hope you got this on cut/paste.
Oh shit dude, I totally got taken lol
I should have noticed with the app argument... but he seemed so sincere haha
Wait, so there was a Dualshock 4 in the video?
Yeah I already edited it out of my old post. These joke things don't usually get me like this, I'm usually pretty good about it... maybe it was the accent but he seemed so sincere lol
So, yeah, you actually got me OP, which few people are able to do. I'm pretty impressed actually haha
I have no time to watch videos or read the OP. I need to nail dat first post, which is all that counts!

Well, the video wasn't funny, so you can't tell if the guy was serious or not.Holy cow, I thought it was bad enough that some people ignored the video and just posted their thoughts, but there are some people who watched the video and still don't realize that it is a joke? Wow!
I think we've all been a little crazy teh last couple of days lol
Oh shit dude, I totally got taken lol

We all hope so.
look at that comparison on his screen lol
You didn't see anything suspicious?
Yes yes it was
There is no way that was not a satirical video
Are you Syrio?
I'm assuming you are joking?
How does someone not notice with the pixelated screen comparison and the joke that you can fucking skype with the Call of Duty dog?
Is this really possible that people take this seriously?
No one's looked at the video? Heh.

I watched it, figured it was a dramatization, to try proving a point.
Did this happen to happen in middle of a forest? Most tvs in civilized world are 1080p and only few lowest of low end tvs are lower res.
While I'm somewhat involved and this could be seen as self-promotion, I truly think this video makes a lot of great points that haven't been considered in the whole CoD Ghosts 720p on Xbox One debate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Run8gMVYj2Y
Especially when you consider Kinect and how it practically forces you to take more distance from the screen.
who?
Dude got Junior'd for this? It was a joke. Kinda pathetic how people don't read the OP or click on the links provided before posting.
what? ive seen more 720p sets out in the wild than i have 1080p. its probably still an even balance, if anything.
That was a long post for a joke OP....hope you got this on cut/paste.
Freudian slip?
