My white Manager says my ringtone makes him uncomfortable

My current text ringtone is Ice Cube's "YO WE GOT A PROBLEM HERE?" from Boyz In The Hood. Nobody's said shit to me about it and I'd like to see them try.

OP should demand the request in writing, but only after reporting his manager's ass to HR.
In my dream world you're the guy who fires people from the office

Ugh. You guys need better ringtones. Including OP. And the first rule is dont use songs, I have never seen anyone over 15 who uses a song and is not a twat.

Its super fucking annoying.

Why does this not surprise me?

The manager has a "right" to not feel uncomfortable in the workplace, but the threat is out of line. If he truly has an issue, he should go to HR and voice his complaint.

It's pretty funny to me, but idk if I'd use it at work depending on the environment. Also I'm not black ya'll

Never heard of CB4. Is it any good?

I thought it was hilarious when it was released, but I haven't seen it in years. No clue how it has aged.

The chorus from White and Nerdy could be considered inappropriate and unprofessional as a workplace ringtone. Some guy saying "I'm black y'all" over and over is the same. Likewise almost any novelty ringtone.

Snitching to HR for something as minor as a ringtone? Involving HR is a doubled edged sword, as they're neither for OP nor his manager, their job is to decide in the interest of the company. The result could be something that both parties are unhappy with.

Going to HR isn't "snitching". Cut that out. The ringtone doesn't belong at work. Change it. Problem solved. It being minor also works the other way around: Is it really worth it to try and battle over some dumb ringtone?

Do you see yourself staying and moving up in this company.
We all have to "sanitize" our personalities in the workplace.

This. Welcome to life.

I normally just put my phone on vibrate when I'm at work.

Yeah, not to call you out, but that's a pretty bad mindset.

This.

I like the choice in OP ring tone lol. It says nothing but I'm black. Contact HR and request it on writing and all that jazz.
I thought it was like drop it like it's hot for him to be offended about lol.

You manager has a stick up his ass but if you like employment you should change or disable it at work.

HR will likely side with the manager.

That's why I said if he "truly" has an issue. If it's worth enough to threaten a write up (and be reported to HR himself), this guy must really feel uncomfortable.

I wouldn't use that at work despite being black (y'all), but my phone is on vibrate at work anyway.

I use ringtones of hip-hop songs all the time but it's usually an instrumental section of a track I like.

Nah breh, change it. I don't even know why you have a song as a ringtone in 2016 anyways.

If you wanna be cheeky find the midi version of that song use that instead.

Frankly I'd ask you to change it just on the principle of how annoying it must be to hear that. Though, it wouldn't make me uncomfortable, just annoyed. I really hate obnoxious ringtones, and that's an obnoxious ringtone.

If you think your boss is made uncomfortable because the ringtone is shouting what race you are, maybe talk to HR or look up the rules. If your boss just has standards for maintaining a relaxed atmosphere, change your ringtone. It's annoying.

Are you in Canada OP?

While I think hr would side with the manager, a human rights tribunal in Canada would likely lead to a settlement for you as you could argue racial discrimination. Usually company will just pay out in arbitration, it's cheaper than letting it go to court.

Really though, you have to ask yourself if this is the hill that's worth dying on.

That is discrimination to me. There are barely any lyrics in that ringtone. What if it was a recording of you saying the same thing? You can't call yourself black? Fuck him, cb4 is awesome.

Sure there wouldn't be any fucking issue if you were white and the ringtone was saying I'm white yall.

I can say with almost 100 percent certaintly that a ringtone saying "Im White Yall" would be considered much more offensive. At least where I work.
