my Xbox 360 #5 just red ringed. I think I'm done

My 360 just RRODed a couple of days ago. It's my first one and it's out of warranty now. I bought it a few months before Halo 3 came out. I don't know what I should do. It looks like I can get a refurbished one from GameStop for about the same price MS will charge me to fix it. Or maybe I should just take the thing and most of the games and trade them in for the 3DS fund. I like the 360 and all but to have the thing work one minute and then not when you turn it on again pissed me off. I don't want to pay over $100 for something that's not even my fault.

Should've been done at #2, IMO.

GPU failure $150 to replace it (before they gave refunds/free repair for this. SMH MS). Year later? GPU failure/E74 again.

Fuck MS and their shitty hardware. I'm not buying a slim because they couldn't fix it with four revisions to the original hardware.

That's basically the same model I had with the same error I had.

Tutorial

If you modded the case then this should be cake. Do not 'bake' the XBOX. If you have to use a heat gun. The improvement to cooldown flexing before and after this fix is ridiculous.

oddly enough my 360 is the only system that hasn't gone out on me.

first to go was the Wii I purchased it at launch, went out 6 months or a year ago (not sure because I never play it). Disks still work, but all channels aside from disk channel don't work because of corrupt memory data.

got YLOD on my original launch 60gb ps3 3 weeks ago, already got it replaced by sony and back into action. ($130 later).

I bought a 360 a month before halo 3 came out, and then returned it to costco and bought the halo edition because I read they may hold up better in the long run... thus far that was correct. (plus my original 360 that I returned kept putting little scratches in my disk so it may have actually been defective, but i'm not sure).

I'm still on my first, though it was repaired for red ringing two years ago.

That said, it sounds like two of your breaks aren't Microsoft's fault. A Costco screw up and mod mishap aren't their fault.

Sell that shit on amazon and buy a reliable system. Sony is waiting.

My PS3 just started reading discs "when it feels like it" I can't install GT5. Other games play sometimes and sometimes they don't. So....

Just get a PS3 and feel better about yourself. That's what I did when my last 360 crashed. Haven't touched it since in about 6 months.

Why would it? MS has just never really learned from their mistakes going by their other products.

Huh?

The original Xbox was an indestructible cinder block of power. The 1st version 360 was the opposite. Most post HDMI 360s are fine, and the S is perfect so far.

How many other consoles have they made? To that end, how much other hardware have they made full stop?

I'm on my third. My first two the AV part in the 360 stopped working or something. Got it fixed for free.

I probably just jinxed it, but it will be a excuse to give a slim.

Huh? Windows 7, Windows Phone 7, Zune, etc. Even the 360 is a winner compared to the original Xbox. What are you smoking?

I just got my third 360. I think Microsoft is kidding themselves if they think this won't bite them in the ass next generation. I've replaced one Xbox, and two Xbox 360's now and compared with no PS3's ( I have 2), no PSP's(I have three), and one PS2. Their quality control is shitty and I think I've actually become a little jaded. I noticed the last 5 -6 multiplatform games I've bought have all been PS3.

Dealing with their customer service is shit and charging 150 dollars for a repair is an insult when the price of a new arcade is 200. Honestly I am so wanting to be a microsoft fan but they just seem like such assholes the last couple of years in particular.

And the warranty for three red rings is 3 years, I argued with them for an hour and escalated two levels of support and got nothing they won't budge.

I think it's safe to say that nextbox will be QA tested to hell and back.

360 just had a major flaw in it's inner design and it bit MS in the ass. Compound the issue with such an iconic failure prompt like the 3RROD and you got yourself a very visible failure phenomenon.

Keep in mind, ms doesn't want this shit happening anymore than you do.

I think the slims are safe.

As for my own 360, 0 problems ever.

Never, ever buy a refurbished Xbox 360. Every old 360 is a ticking time bomb. By getting a refurbished system, you're buying a 360 that's already ticked for quite some time.

I had three of them red ring before Microsoft wanted to charge me for the repair. I threw it in the closet, put the money towards upgrading my computer and haven't looked back.

It's hard for me to be understanding of this guy when he attempted to change the case for one of them, and another one had nothing to do with the product at all, just a stupid employee.

i'm not saying they are't built like crap. cause they suck. but yo, if you've rrod'd 5 times man? something's wrong on your part as well. you got them jawns stashed in a cubby or something? you smoke cigarettes or blunts in there? is that shit on the floor?

something's up.

I wonder how inflated the Xbox360 numbers are because of RROD issue. I know I've bought 3 different Xbox360's...

I'm on number 6 myself. Two disc-read erros, 4 red-rings.

When I rang up to organise a repair, MS had the gall to inform me I'd have to pay $200AUD to get it fixed, because "disk reader" issues are not covered beyond 12 months from your last repair. I cracked the shits, and after about 10 minutes, following a few background checks to ensure I wasn't lying about it being my sixth repair, they agreed to repair it free out of 'courtesy.

I've never had a problem with any other console in my entire life, so to have 6 consoles in less than 5 years is pretty fucking ridiculous and an indictment on the 360 design. Still, the 360 has provided me with some of my favourite gaming moments, so I remain in love with the little fucking box of tricks.

If its out of warranty It's easy to fix RROD yourself if youre comfortable removing the 360's motherboard and follow an Xclamp fix tutorial. (it's no harder than working with a PC motherboard).

Man that really sucks.

I only use mine for XBLA games and do all my third party gaming on the PS3. I wonder if not using the disc drives is safer... ?

I pretty much figured KINECT would bomb for just this reason, yeah, I was wrong. lol

I had gone through a handful of refurbs up until about 18 months ago. My current refurb has been great ever since and I use it a ton. As far as customer service goes, I use to dread those calls to setup a work order but the last time I tried doing it online and I have to admit it was extremely easy to do. Took like five minutes and two days later I had a box, 7 days later I got it back. I highly recommend going the online route, its actually very good.

I can't believe this crap. I had a xbox360 since launch, first one red ringed, second one stop powering one, replacement third one came out of the box mutilated (I suspect someone tried to pull something at costco), #4 died of a freak case modding accident -- i changed the case, everything was fine, until a short caused a general meltdown, what a dumb mistake..

And now #5 just randomly died. Last night I used it to chat with friends, and now its just useless. I used the guide at http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/Xbox-360-error-codes.htm to find out what was the real source of the error, and it turns out to be the cpu overheating, typical error. I dont even know if Microsoft still covers red rings? Its an arcade model that I bought just before the hd models that came out with the hdmi ports. I dont have the receipt anymore. How fucked am I?

This sucks, I had people coming in sunday to play kinnect, I own over 40 retail titles that I bought over the years, I cant just go 'fuck it' and not buy another one.. Argh!

Before you guys ask, the unit is in my gaming room, next to an og xbox and a ps2, its well ventilated and its not a dusty room, heck i have all my arcade cabs in the room.

Hey what you need to do is go and submit it online and you will find out right away if its covered or not. You don't even have to submit a credit card. This will at least let you know if its out of warranty or not. If it turns out to be out of warranty you can then go ahead and submit payment and have it processed or you can just cancel it without even listing your credit card #.

If you need help feel free to send me a private message.

To be honest you are lucky that model of the 360 has lasted you this long. Pre HDMI port is what late 2006 manufacture date? Maybe early 2007. That particular 360 is pretty similar to the launch model and wont have the newer heat sinks or board revisions.

Either go with a slim or pick up an 09/10 arcade unit.

There are reputable people out there who will do a proper reflow of the CPU/GPU with an actual reflow station. I'm actually in the process of upgrading to a more proper station and figuring out my new thermal profiles, but $40 + shipping and a 3-6 month warranty is really the preferable option. If the solder under the chips is properly reflowed and a simple fan mod is applied, the console can last an eternity.

Ideally, a BGA reballing of the solder under the chips with actual leaded solder is the perfect solution. Unfortunately, this is too time-consuming for the repairer, and so the repair isn't economical as it would be upwards to $100. However, a reflow + fan mod will basically make your system like new again (crappy lead-free solder and all), but the solder won't get hot and crack any more because of the nice, 12-volt fan blowing on it.

Could be worse - didn't TTOB lose that many 360s as well as that many PS3s due to hardware breakdowns?

I did that to fix E74. Bullshit. Reapplied the thermal paste twice. Fan kicks on for 30 seconds, E74 (AKA: Not fixed) and then screen is wiped while the fan is off and the power is still on: Basically, dead.

And this is the Jasper or whatever the first 2007/HDMI revision 360 is.

X-CLAMP isn't a sure thing.

GPU REFLOW. X-clamps is for suckers, and it definitely won't fix an E74. The last step of the X-clamp fix is basically the same as the towel trick - disconnect your fans and allow your 360 to bake itself back to good health like some sort of easy bake oven. Also, if you got one of the first run of HDMI units, it's an Opus and not a Jasper. That means it did come with the new heatsink, but not with the die shrink or lower power consumption.

An old Arcade unit? I'm surprised it lasted this long for you.

You already have a PS3, so I'd go for a Slim.
