Myspace data breach

A dead website that we all practically signed up for. Did they delete the old accounts? I don't think I need to worry since the password is probably old but it's still worrying.

I have no idea what password i even used, and I am 99.9% sure I don't use that password these days, but it is still worrying. As many accounts as there were in that breach, even 0.5% of them being valid on other sites is still a huge issue. I am sure the percentage of the passwords they used on myspace being used on a site like facebook is a much higher percentage than that.

Throwin' me back to when I went by revolvingdisco on the internet.

I'm so ashamed of myself.

RevolvingDisco is a pretty bitchin' name. No need to be ashamed.

If I never manually closed my account, would it still be there now?
I haven't logged in since like 2008 or something. I wonder if it's still there.

The thing to worry about would be if you used the same password on other sites. Obviously no one cares about a stupid MySpace account, but you can bet that people will try e-mail + password combos from this leak on other websites.

What is even scarier now that I think about it, is that you can use facebook to log into a bunch of sites these days.

I don't even remember my password to my old MySpace account anymore. I'd hope they deleted it like they were supposed to, but I doubt they did.

Well I hope they don't steal the valuable hotmail address I used back then. I don't think my shanic address can handle it.

Why is that scary? That means if there were a breach, you'd only have to change your facebook password for those sites.

Just because people tend to recycle passwords. If someone uses the same password for facebook as they did on myspace, they could log into any site that they used facebook to sign up for/with. It is up to the user to update their facebook password and I am not confident many will do so.

If you want to see if you were affected, HIBP has already been updated with this leak: https://haveibeenpwned.com/

no idea what xbox scene is.

This is more valuable for the data in aggregate, moreso than valid passwords it may have. Since the massive Gawker dump, breaches like this have far more advanced password dictionary tables than anything.

Top password was 'homelesspa'.

Nearly a million of them. Sounds dubious. Like that's not a typical password, so going to assume thats from automated fake accounts. Nearly a million of them!

no idea what xbox scene is.

The website is still up but appears to be inactive since 2010 based on them asking "Will you buy the Kinect?" on their front page.

EDIT: Oh, it's for homebrew Xbox games.

DOUBLE EDIT: nope, their news page is still alive and updated. They posted the last one in February. Looks like it's just the rest of the site's that's dead, which explains the dated design. How curious, it's like an online post-apocalyptic society, scavenging for scraps in the ruins of what once was. Oh, and the forum lives! http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php

As insignificant as Myspace is today, stories of data breaches scare the shit out of me, because it's possible for the same to happen to Facebook, and I cannot imagine having my shit aired (messages, particularly), as well as billions of other people.

I expect it will happen at some point.

Recently i tried seeing if my old account was still up, just to reflect on my old self, but i couldnt find any trace of it. Probably for the better.

My account is still active but I lost the password and requested a reset effective in 72 hours. A few things are working for me:

It's an old address that depending upon one's perception of the term active is no longer available.

I'd don't remember much on that account anyway but still I do not want that account associated with a hacker.

I kept trying to delete my MySpace account, but could never find the option and they didn't reply to my emails. Hopefully it got deleted.

I don't use that email anymore, or remember the password. I wish I could close it, too, but I don't have any of that info to even get into it. HaveIBeenPwned says it was pwned in the Adobe crack.
