n-Space expands for Revolution development

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/busi...,0,4786432.column?coll=orl-business-headlines

Most all the talk you hear about video-game makers in Orlando concerns Electronic Arts.

That's understandable. EA is by far the largest, employing more than 700 people, even with a recent layoff.

And the next largest in town?

That would be n-Space, which employs 50 folks now. Look for them to expand.

President Erick Dyke expects to add 20 art, production and designer types by the summer. The company is doubling its physical space, too, taking an additional 7,000 square feet in the Westwood Plaza near SeaWorld.

Dyke formed the company 11 years ago. He and his partners had been working on military simulators and took those same skills and turned them into making video games.

The company's titles include Geist and Duke Nukem -- as well as some Rugrats and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen games.

Best of all for future revenue, n-Space is producing games for Nintendo's new Revolution console, which is due out later this year.

Hopefully, Nintendo isn't stupid enough to publish whatever they're developing again. Geist proved that even with a promising concept and some major design input from Nintendo, not to mention quite a bit of time in development, the company simply doesn't have the talent to create a decent game.

I don't doubt that Nintendo will be publishing at least one of their next-gen games.

Hmm... well they've proven that they can at least make a decent multi-player FPS with new mechanics, online might be the only way to go with Geist but they should let someone else handle the single player game this time.

Geist was average at best.

Why does Nintendo even have their hands involved with these guys? There are far more talented PC developers out there who are far more competent at first person shooters.

from what i heard Geist is far from shit. In fact im sure most reviews of the game admit at the very least it qualifies as "decent". Why are you condemning an entire studio just because it produced a single game that recieved mild reception.

Maybe they're hoping for Retro part two?

I played through the entire game from beginning to end.

AI was terrible, presentation was decent, weapons were standard fare (nothing extraordinary), controls were sloppy, boss battles seemed forced in place, and the multiplayer was probably the most redeeming feature.

I don't find myself disagreeing with gamers who say that Geist is shit.

Other people might be condemning n-Space because of just Geist, but I condemn them because of Danger Girl, Mary-Kate and Ashley Sweet 16, Mary-Kate & Ashley's Magical Mystery Mall, and Mary-Kate & Ashley: Crush Course.

Nintendo's making PS3 games? When did this happen?

You're thinking about Kuju (Battilion Wars) I think.

N-Space is a joke. They were given so many tools/resources to create a good game, and they still dropped a bomb. Geist is a piece of crap. It feels like something that's 5-6 years old or something. Outdated. Terrible controls. Bad graphics. etc

The Revolution controller is not going to magically make bad developers good all of a sudden, so I have no faith in this news.

While I'll hate on Geist for the rest, you obviously haven't played the same game I did if you are saying that it had bad graphics compared to the rest of the fare on the GCN.

Think of a Mary Kate and Ashley game with the revmote now that they are 18. :D

Kuju is going to create more games for Nintendo.

They're currently working on a PS3 game; I thought Anihawk was talking about that.

I was not impressed with them at all.

Make their games not suck! Do us proud.

I was half joking given their portfolio, but I may try for an internship just to check the place out. *shrugs* its a possibility, and it would be decent money over the summer.

Amen! I joked before they should buy out 3d Realms and help them finish DNF :P

I'd wager it's Geist 2.

... it wasn't that bad.
But if you can make 5 MK and Ashley games, you can give your ghostly FPS another shot with a magic wand, haha

Meh, Geist wasn't that bad. The puzzles were cool, and the graphics could be really nice at some parts. The whole underground Mansion area was really neat, it was just the last level that sucked SO BAD.

The multiplayer was fun though. Towel Girl was hillarious.

Geist was a solid effort from N-Space and I imagine the team learned a lot from working on that project. I look forward to seeing what they develop next.

n-Space might not make the best FPS's or top tier Mary Kate and Ashley games, but they could possibly make one hell of a chef training wiggle wand non-game.

Despite the fact Geist was in development for like 2+ years, the game felt so horribly outdated. Hence why I hope they correct it with Geist 2 and make it feel more...real. >_>

nSpace sucks, but they are probably costing Nintendo a fraction of the money Rare did to suck.

There were hardly any Rare games that didn't break a million while they were with Nintendo.

FFCC and Geist, Q-Fund was a total failure.

But it was because you cannot expect an AAA title paying amounts like 10 milions of ÂĄ for FFCC.

FFCC at least sold pretty well, and they are making a franchise out of it.

whatever money they spend on n-space development would be better spent securing exclusives or ports that people actually want to play. fuck n-space.

Yeah, but you know guys, sometimes a developer makes, like, a bad game and then he makes, like, a good game. And sometimes a "good" developer makes a bad game and a "bad" developer makes a good game. You know, people can improve. Things change. Some people even LEARN from their mistakes. It's a funny concept, I know. But it's happened before.

And yes, Geist sucked. I wonder how many of you actually played it, though.

What will GAF do if n-space's next game is good? Explode?

What was the point of this little lecture? The view is, n-Space is a piece of shit so far. So why would anyone anticipate what they make until they do prove that they have the ability to make something not shitty? Where in this should we be giving them the benefit of the doubt?

"Sometimes bad developers make a good game!"

No shit

Too bad they haven't yet, though.

GAF will have played the game. That's the Nintendo Difference™.

One area Nintendo seriously has declined in from the N64 era is their 2nd party support.

I really hope Nintendo isn't banking on this studio to make some kind of killer Rev FPS.

Okay, fair enough, they made a couple of Mary-Kate and Ashley games... yuck.

Also RUGRATS: SEARCH FOR REPTAR. A synopsis of this forgotten gem -

Tommy has lost his Reptar puzzle pieces. Join Tommy and the rest of the Rugrats babies as they search for the missing pieces everywhere from the Pickles' backyard to outer space in the RUGRATS: SEARCH FOR REPTAR game.

They also made the Bug Riders, Geist, Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes, Duke Nukem: Time to Kill, Diehard Trilogy 2 and Danger Girl!

I see a lot of potential in this one.

If you have potential it shows right away.

Nintendo gave Rare some money and they produced Donkey Kong Country with it.

If you're a good studio, you're going to make a good game if Nintendo funds/oversees it and gives you all the time in the world to develop it.

The fact that Geist is still about an average game despite all that ... really doesn't inspire much confidence.

There are so many better PC developers that would kill to have the funding/financial security that being a Nintendo 2nd party would bring.

Agreed, I'm still wondering why no major publisher hasn't tapped Raven Software (Quake 4, X-Men Legends 2) to do games for them (exception being Lucasarts and Activision).
