Nagoshi talks about Yakuza localization (no 5, maybe Ishin), platform choice, & more

tumblr_mguh4anKIp1qdcwzto1_500.gif

Hopefully it makes it eventually though....I mean they have Atlus's localization team now right? ;-;

Nagoshi crushing dreams and giving false hopes for the future as well :/
Also I'm not really buying that they have to do the localization by themselves, it's just that Sega doesn't think they can make enough money.
With Ishin being on two platforms (even 3 if Vita in included), localization costs might be justified but I'm not hoping for anything at this point.

NISA manages to profit off of them somehow, though, despite their games having sizable scripts and high-profile Japanese voice actors.

NISA is not Sega

I'm sure they have two different definitions of profitable

Kinda like the difference between a college student living with their parents and a PhD graduate who owns their own house. They can both work at McDonalds and make money, but while the college student might appreciate that paycheck, it's probably not worth the time of someone with much higher living expenses and access to much more appealing and lucrative opportunities.

SEGA have their own strategy about this sort of stuff, see Valkyria Chronicles see their Vita games, if they think a game wont sell enough or don't have fanbase they will not do it, Atlus USA team mean nothing here since we are playing with SEGA rules here.

Lol at people still saying not to dub it. Been that way since 2.

I WANT MICHAEL MADSEN BACK

Also lol stuff of note:

People getting butthurt about them not bringing over 5 when these games sell terrrrrible here, yet they brought over FIVE OTHER ONES, including fucking Dead Souls

Comparing a game like Yakuza to a fucking NISA game

However, the Ishin stuff is intriguing...the Vita stuff is weird though. He said crossplay...that basically means Vita version, no? You don't misspeak when it comes to that.

Yes, but surely some money is better than none. Sega doesn't even have to localize it themselves, they can let someone else do it and make pure profit. Sega's definition of profitable is likely unreasonable, which seems to be a problem among the bigger Japanese publishers like Square-Enix and Capcom.

Sony needs to realise, the more that these niche and/or Japanese titles don't get translations, the PS4 and the Sony brand is losing it's allure.

For multiple generations, the Sony consoles have always been the go to consoles for me, solely due to platform exclusive Japanese titles & franchises.

There needs to be a process for translating titles alongside development, and getting it into the west ASAP. Even if it's just subtitles only. The title may only see sub 100k sales...but it's a significant advantage and a niche market fulfilled that your competitors aren't fulfilling

Probably, but they've been doing pretty well after scaling back on home console development to just proven franchises in territories they've proven to do well in, so I see that unlikely to change. Especially for a Yakuza game, which to my knowledge sold progressively worse over here with new each entry they brought over.

It probably is unlikely, since they're too stubborn to let anyone else handle the localization of their non-Sonic Japanese games. Maybe I'll get around to starting to learn to read Japanese someday.

Well.

Time to import 5, I guess.

i would buy it for DOUBLE the price you hear me Sega. DOUBLE for the japanese gamers paid for...

So are there any fan translations of the game available? even if its a txt file? at least its region free!

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if NISA's games outsold the Yakuza games at this point. It's pretty dire.

Maybe is it time to do something larger scale (such as Operation Rainfall) to get the fifth entry? Many people seem to have been looking forward to it, I'm sure if we all were to make some kind of major push to let Sega know that we would indeed purchase and play a basic Yakuza 5 translation, we can make it happen and also get more people interested in the series in one fell swoop. I definitely agree with that one poster about Sony having a potential niche to fill in the marketplace with the release of more obscure Japanese titles, and Yakuza 5 seems more than deserving of a chance to capture North American audiences.

Sega west have no strategy, they should be spun off amd just handle their western games and ios shit like they want to and not have a fucking THING to do with sega's japanese games ever again. put them on the market for other localisers because sega west arent doing anything at all with them. There is no plan, no strategy, just series left to die.

You can can argue about sales and profitability all day, it's irrelevant, PSO2 is the most popular and profitable game sega has EVER released and they fucked up releasing that.

so this is a bummer right here

It's not

We will get it.
Mark my words people.

this guy knows! BELIEVE

Ishin's most likely getting localized, and because I'm going to honestly try building up a library this time I intend to buy it whenever it comes out.

There's no 5, but I don't feel like going back and looking at Yakuza 1&2's PS2 graphics anyway, so wouldn't I be lost?

where are you getting "most likely" from? and please dont say "a guy on GAF"
also: no, every mainline Yakuza title has a good (and optional) catchup video at the beginning, so you can jump right in

So they can purchase an entire company, but Sega can't find a way to localize Y5. Eff you.

and said company excels at top-tier localizations, too

squeaky wheel gets the oil.

game is like 5+ years old now though, might be time to import!

All 20 Western Yakuza fans are devastated.

those 20 are worth all 76 bionic commando fans, though

I can't stop believing, sorry Nagoshi.

PREACH

Well.

Time to import 5, I guess.

honestly, i'm holding out - the Operation Rainfall poll is about to end, and i wanna see what kind've momentum it gets.
no hurry either, i need to wait on KHH subs' YT walkthrough before i'd be ready. now, 1/2 HD i might go ahead with by the year's end.

I still believe brah, Nagoshi said 'not at the moment', but then once Ishin is out they could focus on localizing Yakuza 5. The PS3's still kicking it in 2014, and we've waited a year, we can wait a few more months~

Well i do not know why would i bother getting any of the further ones you bother to localise either friend. Good luck with that.

I guess I should just buy the Japanese version. At least PS3 is region free so I can play it...if there's some kind of guide somewhere.

Sega would mutilate the game by removing stuff westerners "don't understand" anyway. Sega is such a bad disgusting company.

As I said thank goodness I watched the entire game (Yakuza 5) already once I saw the writing on the wall. Hopefully, he gets the green light to localize Ishin because I'd love to get my hands on that but just in case I won't get my hopes up.

Every time fans begged that there was a huge user base ready to buy the games, every time said imaginary user base didn't buy the game in enough numbers to make it worth SEGA's efforts. They even made a relatively large marketing push with 4, for naught.

Why people keep hoping for further entries to be localised is beyond me. We don't deserve it.

It's a niche Japanese game. I don't know what they were expecting.

They need to market it with a bit more oomph. Show the heat moves, guys getting smashed with bikes etc. Make it out to be the Japanese GTA and it should help sell a few more. I think Sony should at least help with marketing if not localization.

Isn't that what they tried with the first game? Complete with the dub? I don't know if it will ever hit critical mass, but neither should it be.

After reading this post from our old bud Segata Sanshiro, maybe you might not care as much? (come baaack, SS)

@Sanshiro_Segata: Hey, English Yakuza fans. I know you are disappointed. It sucks to not get a loc for a game you were looking forward to. If it's any consolation, RGG5 is the worst installment of the main series by far. You know when a great TV show goes a couple seasons too long just because it's making money? RGG5 could be gaming's poster boy for that. Three plots that completely fail to come together properly, Kiryu/Haruka/Akiyama completely shoehorned in, total disregard for 4's ending, A main plot more focused on a weird criticism/support of the Idol business instead of yakuza, some of the worst forced mini-games yet, Cutscenes go for nearly an hour all too frequently, new character is fun but his fighting is ass and he REALLY doesn't ever fit in the story. Essentially you've been deprived of season 8 of House. I wish I could roll back my regard for the series to where it was immediately after RGG4. It wasn't my favorite but it at least set up a promising future for the series, which has unfortunately been bulldozed by Dead Souls, Kurohyou 2, and 5. In conclusion, I guess be more disappointed you didn't get 1&2 HD. Those are awesome.

Nope, I still want it. Bears fighting, idol battles and five fucking cities.

And I can actually play Yakuza 1-2, just not the HD version.

I honestly hope Nagoshi and co. at least reconsider the issue, once Ishin is finished and before they move on to 6.
To be honest, I'd rather have the main series localized rather the spin-offs ever again (doesn't mean I won't buy Ishin if it does make it).

Lol at people still saying not to dub it. Been that way since 2.

Pretty revealing me thinks.

"How dare Sega not localize this series that I clearly have no intentions to buy or play!"

yea, it is telling whenever someone thinks that they'll ever dub a Yakuza game again that they're not paying attention to the series...no wonder we're in this situation.

Maybe is it time to do something larger scale (such as Operation Rainfall) to get the fifth entry? Indeed, though the question is what kind of deal can make SEGA go ahead and allow Sony/OR Lai (or even Atlus themselves) localize the game...even Bayonetta got another chance through a full funding by Nintendo deal, what are Yakuza's chances for something similiar by others...then again, different situations I suppose.

They need to market it with a bit more oomph. Show the heat moves, guys getting smashed with bikes etc. Make it out to be the Japanese GTA and it should help sell a few more. I think Sony should at least help with marketing if not localization.

Yea, marketing it as a Japanese GTA is a terrible idea and it obviously did not work the first time, especially with the English voices...they're different games even factoring the changes between both series.

Considering he thought Valkyria 2 was the best in that series, him hating it makes me want it more

well if Sega dont want to bring Yakuza west thats fine, just likes it fine for me not to bother with any of their other franchises, not like they actually bother releasing the game I want to play anymore but still :/

i'm not listening. unban and mobilize the nagoshination. tweet yoshida, booya and the other guys to bring this over. it's a sony exclusive game, you want to see it released.

make an artsy film trailer and label it playstation c.a.m.p, i don't care.
