No Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft allowed here folks, let's name a game people should play on one of the "other" consoles...

TG16/Jaguar/3DO/NeoGeo/FM Towns/X68000/etc are all welcome

I'll start off with Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar, it's the pinnacle of twitch gaming and one of the finest, if not THE finest tile for the ill fated Jaguar.

It was so good it even got an offical OST

TG16 CD/PC Engine CD--Dracula X.

It's the best classic style Castlevania. Sufficiently challenging without being too hard. Great music. Great art direction.

I know you said no Nintendo, but I feel like Wario Land for Virtual Boy is a good candidate. Can't believe that this hasn't been re-released on the 3DS eShop.

I was gonna say Darius Gaiden for the Saturn because of that funky fresh music, but the
Dreamcast is niche? Well then, in that case Gunlord for the Dreamcast. I believe it came out on NeoGeo, too.

edit: I guess it's more accurate to say Gunlord is a NeoGeo game that they put on the Dreamcast.

Laser Lords on the Philips CD-i.

You probably haven't heard of it. I hadn't, until I saw supergreatfriend play through it.

On the surface, it doesn't look that great. The graphics aren't very good, and they consist of static single screens with no parallax scrolling or anything. There's almost no music, the only sound effects for most of the game are the tap tap tap tap tap of your character walking around. The clay figures they use to represent characters during conversations are pretty ugly. And the voice acting is hilariously bad (though this might also be considered a positive, as it is hilarious).

But if you can get past all of that, it's a solid adventure game that was pretty ambitious for its time.

FM Towns Marty had the only home release of Tatsujin Ou. Genesis fans might remember an old vertical shooter by the name of Truxton. Well, This is the sequel and it is pretty damn cool. Toaplan was one of the kings of shooters back in the day.

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap on the Master System. An early and good metroid style game with great art. I prefer that version over the PC Engine (?) remake for the art alone.

Alien vs Predator - Atari Jaguar. Such a good game. Best part was it was not unlimited enemies, once they died, that's was it.

God, I love Truxton so much. Still have my boxed copy.

Cosmic Chasm for the Vectrex!

i feel the 64DD is super niche and F-Zero X Expansion Kit should get a mention regardless.

it is basically the Mario Maker of the F-Zero series and it is trapped in a japan-only accesory that costs hunderds of dollars and is rarer than brand new copies of Metroid Prime Trilogy.

IDK if Handhelds count but I think everyone owes themselves a Neo Geo Pocket Color and some Gal Fighters.

And also, Card Fighters Clash remains one of my favorite games ever (Although the DS remake was imo superior)

NGPC just had a lot of awesome games worth playing.

Loved both those. Went out and bought one and any game I could get my hands on when I heard they were being pulled off the shelf. Guys were literally packing them in boxes when I came into the store, just in time.

SNK vs Capcom MOTM is arguably the must-play title on Neo-Geo Pocket Color.

It's a handheld fighter that somehow controls better than the arcade title SVC Chaos, and has more fan-service than the two CVS games (more story dialogue, mini-games, etc). A very nice novelty for fans of both companies.

EDIT: D'oh, beaten on the NGPC front.

Pepe's Puzzles on the Sega Pico is a children's puzzle game that I actually think had a lot of charm, and found it to be a fun game for the platform.

I remember pressuring my dad into buying me a Neo Geo Pocket + 9 game bundle when they were being clearanced in ToysRUs. Still such an amazing system.

Can't stress enough how amazing card fighters for neo geo pocket is. I am so glad I am not alone on this pick.

Well, poop, 'cause that was my pick. I guess it's cheating to instead go for Tempest 3000 on the Nuon?

I'll say Neutopia 1/2 on the PC Engine are a very good Zelda clones and often forgotten. I might possibly prefer them to the original NES LoZ, actually.

I'm going with the GP2X, and I can't mention my game of choice without descending into a bit of rambling praise for the developer and the rest of his work.

My favourite game on the system is Sleuth Slots, by Ruckage. It's a reproduction of an old school slot machine, with a very camp Cluedo theme. The aim is to identify the murderer, murder weapon and location of the crime, which unfolds through various features and minigames. It's all chance of course, just like a real slot machine. But the music is on point, the artwork is fantastic, and the action is frantic and hilarious. I've whittled away many hours playing it over the years, and it still makes me crack a big grin every time I play.

The world has changed since then. The rise of mobile gaming means you can find a million cute little pick up and play titles, and I expect a lot of people won't think much of these offerings at all. But in the GP2X scene, where homebrew ruled and everyone knew everyone, Ruckage brought a level of polish to his releases that was very rare. You don't own a GP2X without his catalogue on your SD card.

Some more:

Dastardly Dungeon: An extremely faithful Game and Watch tribute, in the form of a multi-screen roguelike.

Animatch: Zoo Keeper, basically.

Protozoa: Sciency snake game with excellent synth music.

Snake on Dope: Another snake game. In this, you get more stoned as you go, and the screen wobble effect ramps up. Backed up by a synth-cover soundtrack of classic stoner music (Marley etc), and funny little stoner sayings every time you 'level up'.

Ruck-Man: Before PacMan CE, we had this. Another excellent take on a classic.

Space Varments: Tap-to-splat alien killing game, with a very comical Mars Attacks vibe.

There really needs to be a Youtube video to showcase these excellent pieces of homebrew history.
