Name a Harem Series where the MC Actually Gains a Literal Harem

This is what makes Amagami SS so satisfying, though I guess technically that isn't a harem. In the truest sense of harem, I think Tenchi Muyo GXP had the best outcome.

Amagami is not a harem series but more of a what if multiple timeline series. The reason he ends up with each girl is because each arc is its own separate universe where different decisions come into play.

For Tenchi we didn't even know that it ended up a harem until that episode of GXP aired. And that's only for OVA Tenchi. TV series and the last movie implied it ended as Tenchi and Ryouko. I've no idea for Tenchi in Tokyo as I never watched it.

It is a common term for a type of romantic comedy story where a main character has a large number of love interests vying for the lead's attention. Shows like Tenchi Muyo and Ranma 1/2 are classic examples from anime. Usually it features a male lead with a lot of girls, but there are plenty of examples of "reverse harems" with a female lead with a lot of male love interests.

The problem though that I have is that I feel for many of this series the term harem is a misnomer. Yes the main character has a number of suitors after them but much of the time the MC rarely ever goes further than kissing one or a couple of them but ends up with only one. The term harem should not be applied. Hell, for Ranma it doesn't even come close to counting despite the number of girls after him.

That's why I said ongoing. At the series end there were still several girls in play, and even UQ holder has hinted at that. We just don't know how many won in the end.

I have not and have no interest in reading UQ Holder (due to his botching of the end of Negima. Yes I know there were outside cicumstances but he could and should have handled it better than he did) however I'd be shocked if Akamatsu reveals which girl(s) he ended up with. It'd be a bloodbath among the readers.

I haven't watched any Tenchi series in a million years but I could have sworn he doesn't end up getting with anyone

For OVA Tenchi its not confirmed until the GXP series.

TV series Tenchi Universe more or less is him and Ryouko only. Ayeka more or less stepped aside in that last movie when Ryouko went to rescue him from what I can recall.

I have no clue for Tenchi in Tokyo.

I kind of want to watch GXP now... how does it compare?

Although I guess my opinion of the quality of the originals is heavily based on nostalgia.

The OVAs haven't covered all of Tenchi canon but Tenchi does pretty much marry Ayeka, Ryoko(he has a kid by her) and Noike for sure. I'm not overly clear whether he marries Sasami, I think he does. Mihoshi is like concubine status.

Tenchi also goes back to Jurai at some point.

I watched a little of the shows on Toonami as a kid. Now that I know that Tenchi gets the full monty, I might as well get back into the series.

Where's the best place to start and what should I avoid?

I have no idea about GXP, but the three OVA series are considered THE canon. I'm not sure about the three movies, although the first one is pretty entertaining, and the third one is a strange change of pace you might find interesting. Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo are alternate universes.

Every harem series I watched back in the day the main character never even got to kiss a girl. Then at the end was still single.

WTF, seriously.

I guess the good end of Unlimited Blade Works

Anyone have a solid guide to watching Tenchi Muyo. I watched Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari a while ago not knowing it was part of a longer series up until the end and then when I tried to figure out Tenchi Muyo I got confused and gave up since different people online were suggesting different things. but this thread really makes me want to watch it.

I'd say even though Rito never exactly says he likes it, To Love-Ru has to be one of the best harems anime has ever seen outside of ero stuff. Every single female character in that show is just amazing. I could say the same for pretty much Infinite Stratos and The World Only God Knows as well, but Ichika is an idiot and Keima has little interest so I guess they don't count.

I mainly only read/watch shounen stuff like HunterXHunter and Fairy Tail

I usually don't read these types they don't interest me that much

Am I missing out?

If you want to watch it, there's several different ways to approach.

OVA continuity:
OVA1 <-- at this point, some major staff changes occur so the official "Canon" ends here.
Night Before the Carnival Special
Mihoshi Special
OVA2
OVA3 <-- this is the final part for the original cast
GXP <-- A spin-off featuring an entirely new cast
War on Geminar <-- another spin-off, also featuring its own cast.

Naoko Hasegawa's continuity:
Tenchi Muyo: Daughter of Darkness <-- One of the 3 creative minds from OVA1 and scriptwriter for it continued her work in a series of popular light novels released exclusively in Japan. Daughter of Darkness was the 10th novel, and later made into a standalone movie. While based off of the OVA continuity, it also borrows elements from Universe.

Tenchi Universe continuity:
Tenchi Universe
Tenchi Muyo in Love
Tenchi Muyo in Love 2/Tenchi Forever

Tenchi in Tokyo continuity:
Tenchi in Tokyo

Wait, didn't Universe come after Tenchi Muyo in Love?

We had to import it back in the 90s, so that could be a reason why I'm thinking this, but I thought In Love was part of the original continuity, not the rebooted universe.

Nope, in Love is the first movie for the Universe line, written and directed by Hiroshi Negishi. It takes place very shortly after Universe ended and everyone returned to the house. You can tell where it lies because of Kiyone Makibi's existence, and Tenchi's mother's name being Achika (it was retconned by a madman for OVA3).

WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN!?

I hate talking about it but, here it is:

After OVA1, Hiroki Hayashi and Naoko Hasegawa (two thirds of the creative group behind OVA1 and thus the genesis of Tenchi) left production due to arguements with Masaki Kajishima who continued to demand more control over the show. He since has re-written a ton of the original background material in order to fit things into his perverted ideal.

It all came to a head recently in a Doujin he published, titled -If-, where he showed how he would like to continue the show. Tenchi has children with everyone. I mean everyone. Even Ryo-ohki. He fucks the cabbit. This was never the way the show was intended to be, it's just the unfortunate way things went. I honestly like to encourage people to hold off on going past OVA2 if possible.

Wait.

I remember Tenchi OVA 1 and 2, but never got OVA3 and was hesitant to see GXP. Are OVA 3 and GXP any good?

Also, to this day I've seen none of the Tenchi movies. Any of them worth watching?

See this is what I ended up doing. I never went past OVA 2 (I'm still trying to get OVA 1 and 2 on Blu-Ray), but was curious about seeing OVA 3. Now I'm even more curious.

OreShura, however anime ending spoilers
MC chooses one girl at the end but misunderstandings happen where he somewhat gets all of the girls.
I wasn't a huge fan of the show but it has what I (think) you are asking for.

Also, the MC in Seitokai no Ichizon is actively trying to aim for a harem ending of the student council members.

OVA3 is basically an old man's giant "fuck you" to everyone. He shoves all of the main cast to the background and introduces a bunch of characters that aren't worth caring about. It's essentially a lazy way for him to segue into GXP, while also assassinating the characters in the original group. He also tries to turn Tenchi into something he was never meant to be, a God. He also brings back a certain character from earlier in the show and pisses on their grave.

GXP, viewed on its own, is considered extremely mediocre. As for its relation to Tenchi, it's pretty much bad. I think it is one of the lowest rated shows ever put to Toonami, if that's any indication.

The movies are all fantastic in their own different ways. In Love gives some backstory on Tenchi's parents and borrows some ideas from Back to the Future. They have to travel back to the 70s to save Tenchi's mother from being killed by an anti-Jurain being which would erase Tenchi from existence. Tenchi in Love 2/Forever is a slower, much more deliberately paced movie. It explores Tenchi's actual desires as he is captured by a villain who wants to hold him hostage from the family in a dream world. We see the relationship between Ryoko and Ayeka strained to the very edges as they have to deal with losing the man they both love, and how far they'd go to get him back.

Tenchi Muyo: Daughter of Darkness is an interesting one that has some great character moments. The plot is disconnected from any of the shows and movies as I mentioned, it is part of a series of official Tenchi novels. It is infamous for a scene in which Tenchi performs some domestic abuse. Very dark and different.

Is Tenchi in Tokyo the one that nearly killed the franchise?

Nah, people didn't like Sakuya's inclusion because she shoved her way into the group and won over Tenchi with very little work. It also took a very different format, being kinda Monster-of-the-Week for the first half of the show. But it did not kill the show, because it didn't affect anyone at the end of the day. Tenchi in Love 2 and Daughter of Darkness came out after Tokyo did and were both well loved by the fandom at large.

OVA3 (and GXP to a lesser extent) poisoned the characters and untold amounts of fans. If you ask almost any fan, they will tell you where they stopped caring. And it was in 2003 when OVA3 slapped them in the face and told them that nothing they loved mattered. Having spoken to some FUNi reps, we were told that GXP and OVA3's DVDs were unable to sell at all in the states, while the OVA and movie blu-rays were some of the best selling they had.

Tenchi in Tokyo implies that of all people, Yugi is going to end up winning. It's complicated.

There are two series I can think of where a side character ends up with the harem.

- Inukami: Keita ends up with Yoko and only Yoko. But his cousin Kaoru has 10 girls. Apparently whatever harem anime nonsense that landed Kaoru those 10 girls has already taken place. A few get transient crushes on Keita here and there but at the end they go off after Kaoru.

- Sket Dance - Tsubaki ends up with Mimori, Daisy, and Usami [and Katou ...]

(Edit: Add to the list of shows that had an outright harem ending)

Fujimura-kun Mates

It took way too damn long for School Days to get mentioned, its the only harem worth watching.

Only it's a deconstruction of the harem genre. A douchebag of the highest order, Makoto
cheats on his first girlfriend with every other girl in school, then gets killed by his best friend.
Meanwhile, the show seems to seriously imply or outright state that all the girls have serious mental problems for wanting to throw themselves at him. So sure, he got laid the most, but he ended up
paying for it in the most cathartic way possible.
.

Inversely, the great thing about MCs like Issei(DxD) and Rudeus(Mushoku Tensei) is that they legitimately care about the girls and are able to do heroic feats that convince the girls to fall in love with them.

The sad thing is, I rather liked GXP. It was an interesting look at the universe that doesn't revolve around Tenchi's harem. It was more a comedy then any serious drama.

If I'm not mistaken, strike the blood ends with the Mc impregnating at least 2 of the main series girls and given their attachment to him they probably still hang out what with the Mc being a vampire lord

Kind of. I find it difficult to find a harem series with compelling writing and romance(let alone any polyamorous relationships like in DxD). In fact, High School DxD is a series that also has a lot of Shonen fighting vibes with its battles and worldbuilidng.

We have presentations this week dude, get to work or you're gonna get fired.

It's been a while, but I recall Yomeiro Choice having a harem end. It's an ecchi manga, so NSFW (seriously, though, is ANY manga/anime SFW?).
