As someone that barely plays RPGs, my vote has to go to this:

is paper mario a turn-based rpg? :O

I've played a paper mario like 10 years ago and it wasnt an Turn-based rpg...
i could be wrong thou.

The Wii Paper Mario is not turn based.

All the others are. The gamecube one (Thousand Year Door) in particular is fantastic.

(gee I wonder what the guy with an Ike avatar is going to sa- FIRE EMBLEM and uh FIRE EMBLEM

*cough* ahem

Shout out to the adorably awesome Chocobo's Dungeon

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is by far the best, IMO. It's fantastic for all the reasons people have probably already said.

Others:

Pokemon XD. It does a lot of what people keep wanting the Pokemon series to do, though it has some elements of tedium (though significantly less than Colosseum).

Arc Rise Fantasia is the best traditional one, IMO. Massively underrated, a surprisingly deep story with political themes and a battle system that's engaging though somewhat traditional. Game significantly suffers from "Kirby boss syndrome," though.

Not including the Fire Emblems because I don't think of SRPGs as traditional turn-based RPGs, but they're the best (particularly PoR, though RD is great too).

Most of the suggestions here are solid. Baten Kaitos, Thousand Year Door, Fire Emblem, and Skies of Arcadia especially, but I really wouldn't waste your time with Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. It was incredibly dated the day it released with its highly frequent random battles and glacial pacing combat system. Each fight can easily last several minutes. Getting through Moria was an endurance test and the exact opposite of fun.

Should probably mention that this one comes with a pretty big "but..."

It's true he never said so, but I doubt he will be buying the GC or Wii games before emulating them with Dolphin (no one would). Not blaming him, those games have gained collector's items' prices in quite some cases, so piracy would be more acceptable imo. I am just trying to playfully reference it, I am not condemning it in this case.

And now I feel bad for contributing to a pirating thread.

Opoona is a strangely ambitous and fun game
Arc Rise is indeed solid when the VA is off
Chocobo's Dungeon needs love
Monster's Lab is a cheap and fun little game
Spectrobes Origins is surprisingly decent
Sakura Wars is okay
Shitemasu is good
The Last Story is awesome

Is Mega Man X Command Mission actually good? I only ever care about the Blue Bomber when its in an RPG setting, so I've always wondered.

My top 2 recommendations would be Skies of Arcadia Legends and Tales of Symphonia.

Man, it's clear after reading these posts that I left a lot on the table when it comes to GameCube RPGs. Really should have played Lost Kingdoms and Baten Kaitos.

While everyone will (rightly) say Baten Kaitos and Origins, Tales of Symphonia, and Skies of Arcadia Legends...

Let me give a shot-out to pre-Dark Souls underrated RPG gems Lost Kingdoms I & II from FromSoftware.

They are worth your time.

My man. I loved Lost Kingdoms. Great games!

As people have said, Tales of Symphonia is a gem on the Gamecube, even if not turn-based. If you like Spongebob Squarepants, then Battle for Bikini Bottom is also fun (a platformer), though not the best platformer available in its own right (though still decent).

I think Baten Kaitos 1 is my favorite. I never could get into the combat of the second as it always struck me as rather hectic. Building up those massive card combos in the first was incredible. And the pretendered backgrounds still make jaw drop today.

I should really give Origins another chance though.

I love Arc Rise Fantasia as much as I hate the voice "acting" on that game. UGH

Is there a way to patch the original Japanese work? I will not understand some parts but is better than what we got T_T

While on the subject of RPGs, what the hell is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearer supposed to be? I heard it wasn't a traditional Final Fantasy game or something? More of an action game. Is that true?
